Around SBN: Leandro Damiao Is Still Really Good

"Our massage therapist told me, 'You know, coach, what happened in Haiti is a catastrophe. What you're having is a disappointment,' " said [Roy] Williams. "I told her that depends on what chair you're sitting in. It does feel like a catastrophe to me, because it is my life."

Your life

needs more perspective, Roy.

I wonder what all those homeless Haitians’ are hearing from their own massage therapists.

I think Roy will want this one back.

Wow

My respect level for Roy Williams just went down a few notches.

Too bad, because I generally have respect for that program as a whole.

Roy Williams has a history

of insufferable comments and gestures.

Wait a minute

Are Roy and Lame friends? Is Lame giving PR pointers? If you just would have given me the quote and asked the coach I would have guessed the “leader” of trogan football.

Wow

that is Pete Carroll level hubris.

really Roy?

come on, grow up. There’s a difference between a cushy job and you know, fighting for your life and those who are close to u.

Wow. He didn’t just blurt this out. He’s recalling a previous conversation. Which means he thought about it at least twice, and he clicked “OK” both times.

That's the worst part

This wasn’t spur of the moment or a slip of the tongue.

He thought about this.

At least he has his priorities straight.

That’s sarcasm BTW.

I wanted to interpret the quote in a charitable way...

but after thinking about the massage therapist angle (pointed out by gbruin) I realized it was hopeless.

Wow. What. A. Douchebag.

Wow

He was not just being a douchebag in a momentary lapse of judgment. His entire body of work shows him to be a douchebag. As soon as Tiger gets out of whatever therapy he’s in, maybe those guy can head over to UNC and give Roy a little douchebag therapy.

Another Douche Move...

The Coaches vs Cancer group had all NCAA basketball coaches wear sneakers for awareness a few weeks back.

Roy wore sneakers during the first half vs. Virginia but decided they were bad luck at halftime and switched to dress shoes (for better luck???) Virginia opened the half on an 18-0 run LOL.

UNC ranks 290 in experience and UCLA RANKS 216. I’m not sure if someone already posted this fact. But worth taking note of. Of course as noted before, a losing season is not acceptable.

Experience excuse doesn't work all that much for us

Considering we have 3 seniors in the starting line up.

ya.

it’s not like any of them are perennial starters, they’re all career bench players. they have experience watching stuff happen

Watching the UNC-Duke game

I couldn’t help but notice that UNC, as bad a season as they’re having, would have beaten us by 25 points. Yeah, they were playing their rivals, but so did we, and look what happened: worst loss since the Garfield administration.

UConn could take us down by the same margin. It’s scary to think about, and doesn’t bode well for next year, either.

Massage therapist

Could he be talking about the team’s therapist, or the athletic department’s? If it’s his own, then he is an even bigger douche canoe!

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

He doesn't even have any remorse

He looked very unapolagetic. He acted like she was the stupid one for the comment. I really never cared for him as a person. Now, I have a reason to dislike him. Karma…what comes around goes around. With NC sucking he wants to start pointing the finger elsewhere. Hope he takes the heat he deserves!!

by jaybru777 on Feb 11, 2010 7:44 PM PST reply actions

yup, the guy is focused on himself

Personally, I also spend more time thinking about my own personal/professional problems than I spend thinking about the people of Haiti.

I also spent significantly more money on Christmas presents for perfectly well-off family members than I donated to Haiti relief efforts.

Yeah, it was a dumb comment for him to make in public. Does his self-interested nature make him a worse person than most of us? I doubt it. He is being honest – and totally insensitive.

In the last week, how much public attention has been given to Haiti, where thousands of people are dying, versus the snow storms on the East coast, where thousands of people are… inconvenienced, and/or frolicking in the snow.

Talk about self-absorbtion

You and silverlakebruin have focused in on Williams’ problem—call it hubris or focusing solely on his own problems—what a terrible thing for him to have said. Hopefully, Williams will engage in some real self introspection and recognize their is another world beyond tarheel basketball out there. Can you imagine Coach or Coach Howland saying such a thing?

Even Lavin never dropped that far off the moral end of the earth. (Please note I put the reference to Lavin in a separate paragraph so as not to include his name in the same paragraph as the two wonderful men mentioned in the last sentence of the preceding paragraph—it is a matter of respect.)
