Center Court: UCLA Basketball (v. Southern Cal) Open Thread
While our mens' basketball team hasn't provided a lot of inspiration this year, the ladies have offered plenty Coach Nikki Caldwell's second season in Westwood. The Bruins are playing in a huge basketball game RIGHT NOW against the Trogans, which will determine 2nd place in the conference. Here is Coach Caldwell talking about the game earlier this week:
Of course on the other side the Trogans have Michael Cooper, who classed up the joint last time the Bruins took on these guys.
The game is being televised on FSN RIGHT NOW. Bruins are up 14-4 as I write this. The official site has quick game notes and you can also follow it via their game tracker if you are not watching it on FSN. If you are watching it this is your open thread. Fire away.
GO BRUINS.

Bruins dominating on the boards early 12-4
Sigh. Gotta take off right now but the Bruins are looking good early!
Good players and good people!
Yes the commentators got it. 5 of these players are on the honor roll (3.5+), the kind of players the commentators noted that Nikki wants to recruit. Good players and good people. How does that jive with coop’s f comments. How many rings does he think he’d have without a the Bruins? And I’m laughing. I always love the $c commercial about rising faster than any other university. It’s hard to rise very far when you’re already near the top. But at the bottom? Well, there’s just so much room above you!
Go Bruins!
Just turned it on
27-14 UCLA! Go Bruins!!!

They are looking really good
Dominating with defense and rebounding. Gotta really go now … but hope we can keep this up.
I noticed!
looks like a good crowd!

If this keeps up
I might just have to start using the dvr on women’s bball instead of men’s….
Anyone see cooper at half?
He was being interviewed as the u$c* team went to the locker rooms and asked the interviewer: “don’t you love that crowd” and she suprisingly asked him what he thought of it, to which he responded: “I love that crowd”…in a sarcastic, pissed off tone.
Good for the crowd, band, and spirit squad. Keep it up!
I know
what in the world was that? " And I’d like to thank Kareem and Wilkes for all those rings I have. They must have gone to a great school with a great coach!"
Go Bruins!
Coach Caldwell video
Once you quit staring at her, you realize how well spoken and intelligent and inspirational she is. What a great leader for our team. Go Bruins!!

fun game!
DH & I are watching, and the women are more fun to watch than the men’s team! They’re very quick, they hustle, get rebounds and play defense. Hope we kick SC’s butt. Crowd sounds loud too. :)
+1
Never been a huge fan of women’s bball, but right nowour women are playing solid basketball and they look like a team that knows what it is doing. fun to watch.

Just heard the attendance
8,000. That’s awesome!

It was "I'm Going to College Day"
The normal attendance was only slightly higher, not counting SC fans

The Men can learn a thing or two from this team
they play HARD.
Strong D and rebounding — transition points, ball handling — so much more fun to watch than the men.

That was fun
Saw the last 12+ min on TV. Great hustle. Tough D. Played with an edge. And beat down the rival at home.
There are our Warriors!

Caldwell Coached the Team to Correct Its Mistakes in the First Game
In the video she talks about rebounds, turnovers, making layins, playing a full 40 minutes — and noted that we needed to improve in all of those areas.
We did.
Wish the men’s team would buy in the same way.

The men's team seems to buy in to this one
After the game as the team was leaving the court, Lee and Moser were both over high-fiving the team on the way to the locker room.
Also, the women’s team has a program of ‘guest coaches’ for each game. Today’s? Coaches Daniels and Garson of the men’s team.
Great win for a very good team
Coach Caldwell sees the problems and works to correct them with great success. As a long time follower of the Lady Bruins, I am awed by the ability to communicate by our coach AND the willingness to learn and improve by our players. This had not always been the case but for the last season and a half they show all of the atributes of the great mens teams in our past. Please note the free throw percentage of these able young women-81.3% today. They are worth our efforts to get out and support them-they have earned it

I think Nikki Caldwell is going to end up being another in our stable of great collegiate coaches

Very likely, unless she goes back to Knoxville...
Hope she, like Coach Wooden, decides to not return to alma mater.
