2 Year Notice and 50% Penalty to Leave Big-12
The Denver Post notes a contractural snag for Big-12 teams that would leave the conference. I didn't see this mentioned in the discussions here in BN. The penalty may not amount to much in the grand scheme, but for cash-strapped public schools, it may be a serious barrier.

this presumably constrains Texas more than Colorado
given Texas gets a larger share of the money due to their national TV appearances?
Just an assumption
but my guess is that their are significantly more athletic boosters for UT then Colorado to make the hit a little less painful….
Free Brandon Wood!
Don't see how this would be prohibitive
If it’s in their financial interest to come here, that interest should be far more lucrative than this buyout. If it wasn’t then I don’t think they’d even be considering this.

additionally, I found this quote telling
Any game in the Pac-10 would create an opportunity for alumni events and fundraising.
“Our alumni base is stronger in the Pac-10 areas than in the Big 12,” DiStefano said. “That’s certainly something to consider, especially when the team travels.”
Seems there might be additional revenue streams to consider for Colorado. This article is one of the first that makes me think this makes a lot of sense for Colorado, and not just the Pac-10.
Go Bruins!
Not necessarily prohibitive
But start-up costs can be a big obstacle, even when there are jillions to be made down the line. For instance, I could be a trillionaire in a week if I could open an In-n-Out to here in Denver. But since it’s family-owned and not a franchise, I can’t get past whatever it would take to get in the inner family circle or buy a franchise right or bribe someone, etc.
I just put this up because I wasn’t aware of the specifics on the “buyout”, and it hadn’t been mentioned in any of the discussion. It’s just another more info to throw on the pile.
There was another article today by one of a Denver Post columnist today basically saying Colorado should lobby the Pac-10 to bring them on, and not wait for an invitation. So there is at least a groundswell of support on this end about expansion.
