Center Court: UCLA Basketball (@ Southern Cal) Open Thread

UCLA Bruins at USC Trojans, Feb 14, 2010 7:00 PM PST

Well here we go. After tonight, there will be just 6 more regular season game threads left in this dreadful season. In about half an hour Ben Howland's Bruins (11-12, 6-5) take on Just$C (14-9, 6-5) in a game televised live on FSN and Prime Ticket. The game is "big" in the sense that with 4 of next 6 games on the road, we need to badly to have any hope of finishing at or over .500. Kind of pathetic this passes for a "big" game but like we said it has been a dreadful season.

The tip-off slated for a 7:07 p.m. (PT) tip-off in Pauley East aka the Costco Center.  Guess we can throw up all kinds of cliches about how the Bruins have a great opportunity to win this game.  However, it's the team that has been talking about "competing" and "hanging" with the Trogans all week leading up this game. I suppose Bruins will have a shot if they play 40 minutes of passionate defense with focus and effort, but we can't count on that this year's Bruins Also, for the Bruins to have a shot Bruins will need to be patient on offense, play with composure and set each other up with easy opportunities. Again, can't  really count on that with this team which has been consistently inconsistent all season long.

Expect tonight's telecast to be a two hour of Trogan love fest that will make you want to throw up in your mouth.  The always atrocious Steve Physioc will be doing play-by-play while Marques Johnson will be going out of his way to shower the Trogans with love to show what an unbiased analyst he is in the mold of David Norrie.  Michael Eaves will be doing "sideline" "reporting" which is basically jaberring about whole lot of nothing or information that is obvious to everyone else on BN. If you are in Southern California turn on the radio and listen to Donnie Mac doing analysis for Bruin radio. If you want to follow the game online you can do so via our official site. As always, I imagine many will be here in the game threads providing rapid fire commentary.

So let's get this party started. Fire away.

GO BRUINS.

Request for East Coast/Midwest Bruins - No Olympic spoilers in the open thread

Just wanted to note that NBC is tape delaying their Olympics coverage on the west coast, so if anyone is watching/keeping track of tonight’s events during out game, please don’t mention them here.

You bet

Although I must say I have been looking for pictures of the Swedish Olympic team from the opening ceremony. They – in their team colors – look like natural Bruins.

Check that advice on the radio

Donnie Mac isn’t alone on that broadcast, alas. If the TV guys are really too much to bear, find an old Chick Hearn broadcast and put on some headphones - it will almost certainly describe the game more accurately than Chris Roberts.

all star game

Maybe no will watch the $c game, with the all-stars and the olympics! LOL. Anyway, someone just pointed out how Calipari got all those great point guards (Rose, Evans, Wall). Was hoping Reggie would have commented on people taking SAT scores and whatever Calipari has up his sleeves.

Go Bruins!

I'm inclined to agree

The problem is that there is nothing to be proud of going into that locker room. Nothing to get fired up about. Yes, it’s only a 3 point game, but it’s not really that close and it will show in the second half.

I hope i’m wrong.

good effort this half, but

you just have to admit our guys can’t execute.
Malcolm had great penetration into the lane, but he couldn’t execute a decent jump stop to make a shot
Jerime under only moderate backcourt pressure, panics and then turns it over
Mike and ND missing open 3’s
Throw in a few missed layups (jerime and Reeves)
Still, love my Bruins – and I’m starting to really hate that Lewis guy.

by mplsbruin on Feb 14, 2010 7:56 PM PST reply actions

Way too soon to reach any conclusions about MM

His first significant minutes in the rivalry game? What do you expect?

sjh

by Class of 66 on Feb 14, 2010 7:56 PM PST reply actions

Not only that

He played solid defense while he was in there. I thought it’s playing defense that gets mins in Howland’s rotation?

by Nestor on Feb 14, 2010 7:57 PM PST up reply actions

The problem is he is a TO every time he touches the ball on offense

He has two so far, a travel and double-dribble. We just cant afford turnovers on this team.

by bluebland on Feb 14, 2010 7:59 PM PST up reply actions

Actually

The stats show he only had 1. Considering how he hasn’t been used this entire Pac-10 conference season, I think he played defense pretty well.

by Nestor on Feb 14, 2010 8:02 PM PST up reply actions

He had double-dribble off the rebound, and a travel on the jump-stop

I like his defense. The problem is his strength and footwork on offense which prevents him from keeping body stability and thus the turnovers. If it were merely a problem of poor shooting he’d be playing a lot more.

by bluebland on Feb 14, 2010 8:03 PM PST up reply actions

It'd be nice

If our seniors were held to these kind of standards and getting yanked every time they made a mistake.

by Nestor on Feb 14, 2010 8:04 PM PST up reply actions

Nestor, do you like the rotation better

for this game. We went very deep. Your thoughts?

by DCBruins on Feb 14, 2010 8:05 PM PST up reply actions

Big +1 on that

JA cannot play point in D-1.

by DCBruins on Feb 14, 2010 8:07 PM PST up reply actions

Lay off him

He’s extremely raw, with the potential to be a great defender. We just can’t afford his turnoverness right now, it’s not compensated for by his D. He is playing out of necessity and that’s fine.

by Class of 66 on Feb 14, 2010 9:03 PM PST reply actions

Sorry, but this many TOs and missed free throws can't be blamed on coaching

Anderson was in to spell Honeycutt’s foul trouble in the first half. Should he be benched completely in favor of Hamid and get zero minutes? Maybe, but that’s not completely obvious.

by bluebland on Feb 14, 2010 9:14 PM PST up reply actions

Yes, but in the second, he was committing

turnovers like crazy and CBH put him back in instead of MAH

Go Bruins!

by uclaluv on Feb 14, 2010 9:15 PM PST up reply actions

EVERYONE was committing turnovers

There isn’t a single guard on this team who can handle the ball. Yes that’s a recruiting fault but not a game-coaching fault at this point.

Honeycutt and Nelson, our two best offensive players, are freshmen who both had bad games and lots of turnovers and foul trouble and lapses. If you think abdul hamid’s minutes are whole point of this game you’re way overemphasizing.

by bluebland on Feb 14, 2010 9:18 PM PST up reply actions

It may not have turned on coaching decisions, but it was a coaching decision to have Rag in the game

and his line his awful. I look at Howland’s insistence on playing Rag exactly the same as I looked on Guerrero’s insistence on keeping CTS as coach. There comes a time when you have to admit you’re wrong.

by Fox 71 on Feb 14, 2010 9:05 PM PST up reply actions

No doubt Rag is terrible

but BL and MM were not good either. Neither was JA or MAH. TH fouled out.

by Class of 66 on Feb 14, 2010 9:07 PM PST up reply actions

JA was worse

He killed us and has all year. I hope it is the injuries but why the bleep does he play?

by DCBruins on Feb 14, 2010 9:09 PM PST up reply actions

It doesn't matter how bad they are. Give them a chance.

Rag is not the answer. CTS wasn’t the answer, but Guerrero wouldn’t admit to that undeniable fact. Rag is not the answer. There is a guy shooting hoops behind Dykstra at this very moment who would contribute more than Rag contributes to this team. And his has nothing to do with his legal troubles. This has to do with his three point shooting, which is about the same as mine, and his free throw shooting, which is a little worse than mine. He would get more rebounds than I would, but you have to remember that he’s 50 years younger. But I would certainly be able to get close enough to my man to foul him more than once a game. To me, that’s the most amazing stat in his line – he doesn’t foul anyone. Even.

Howland gets one season like this that's it

This sophmore class has screwed ucla bball for at least 3 to 4 years they are awful with no improvement. Anderson is a joke I hate to get on one of our guys but he is a pg with no handels and no shot. Howland deserves this season and what’s sure to be an average year next year. He got lazy didn’t evaluate talent and were all paying the price. He also put all his hope into a hot and mostly cold guy who plays no defense and didn’t develop his young guys who look like they lack any offensive game.

Swept

By a team of mercenaries led by Krusty the Klown. At least we have something in common with the Trogans: both of our seasons are worthless and pointless.

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

by tasser10 on Feb 14, 2010 9:06 PM PST via mobile reply actions

JA and Drago need to sit for the rest of the season

We need to play whoever else is on the bench. They are pathetic.

by bruin75 on Feb 14, 2010 9:09 PM PST reply actions

and who else did well?

Drago’s bricks? The team’s 50% (if that) at the line? JA’s multiple gifts?

by KSBruin on Feb 14, 2010 9:16 PM PST up reply actions

unwatchable

No penetration and no offensive purpose. and drago jacking up pointless 3s is just plain ugly bb. Howland should be ashamed. Can we yank JA’s scholarship for committing fraud. I see 8th graders handle the ball better.

by bruin75 on Feb 14, 2010 9:14 PM PST reply actions

Spencer Soo, Tyler Trapani, Blake Arnet...

does anyone want to play point? The position’s open. Let’s have open auditions, Howland. Each gets two games.

by KSBruin on Feb 14, 2010 9:15 PM PST reply actions

I don't care about who plays

UCLA must have a winning record. There is no excuse. And I don’t see that happening now.

This was a must win game for the record, for the rivalry, for the moral (after the first blow out.) The players made the effort and JK was hurt, but we were out coached.

$C turned the game with the press. And JA playing killed our momentum. I hate to say this but CBH was out coached tonight.

Can CBH only coach one way (Hard man to man defense)? Can he adapt? The answer seems to be yes and no.

by DCBruins on Feb 14, 2010 9:16 PM PST reply actions

How was CBH outcoached exactly?

We played decent D and rebounded better than much better rebounding team. Our best offensive player took himself out of the game with fouls, and our second best Nelson played out of control.

Howland was tricked into playing Rag

No one would willingly do that, so it had to be some sort of deception by the other side. Maybe it looked like they only had four guys on the offensive end from where Coach Howland was sitting.

I didn’t watch the game, I confess. Did Rag contribute anything on defense? He wasn’t much on offense according to the numbers. Wasn’t it one point in the second half?

by Fox 71 on Feb 14, 2010 9:24 PM PST up reply actions

The Press and JA

The game turned when they pressed. That is when they went on their run, until then it was anyone’s game. We had no answer. The only way it stayed semi-close is they only press after a make.

Also, JA should not play again quick guards. His TOs were at a key time and he gave up a couple big threes. He is not D-1. (Major caveat, I know he has health issues.) But in any case why did CBH play JA at point? That killed us ealier this year.

If we can break a press (get the ball to TH for example but he was at the other end) or JA does not play, we likely win in the first case and have a chance in the second.

by DCBruins on Feb 14, 2010 9:25 PM PST up reply actions

MAH can get very easily trapped in a press

And is too short and limited to pass out of a trap. No doubt that’s why Howland went to JA, whom he expected to play like something better than a four year old. It’s not like we had a press-breaker on the bench — NOBODY on this team can really play point.

by bluebland on Feb 14, 2010 9:27 PM PST up reply actions

Maybe TH

but IIRC, he may have fouled out before JA got picked

by Class of 66 on Feb 14, 2010 9:29 PM PST up reply actions

Agree BUT

You break the press with TH. You have MR throw the ball in, he is a great inbound passer, remember the UW game when he hit MAH for the long pass. You don’t try to force the ball to ML. Even ND if he is matched up against a PF can help break the press.

Our team is not going to break a good athletic press with MAH, JA (cringe), and even ML.

Lots of negatives

No intensity
No penetration
No ball handling
No post play

Could have won this if any of those things were more than horrible. That’s coaching.

*I* ran over George Tirebiter.

We are SO FAR from being good

This is like Howland’s 1st season. Except we don’t have the Lizard to blame. And there are no saviors on the way. Dark days for UCLA basketball…

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

by tasser10 on Feb 14, 2010 9:20 PM PST via mobile reply actions

It looks like the brain surgeons (as Jim Healy used to call them) tried to give us the game by fouling us at the end

which isn’t a bad strategy seeing as how we were 6 for freakin’ 15 from the line at one point. We ended on a hot streak to get to the magic 50% figure.

There has to be a way to practice free throws that would work. Maybe shoot free throws the whole practice, and run a lap for every one that’s missed. 6 for 15 with about 10 seconds left?

I don’t have a solution. All I can say is that this team does not even faintly resemble any of the teams that went to the final four.

I did like Lee's aggression tonight.

But he’s not a ball handler.

Go Bruins!

20 Turnovers +1.05 PPS

=not a very efficient night on the offensive end.

by dkbilson on Feb 14, 2010 9:21 PM PST reply actions

I don't know what that means

or why it equals a not very efficient night. I know that 20 turnovers is bad, but the rest of it is beyond me.

by Fox 71 on Feb 14, 2010 9:25 PM PST up reply actions

PPS

Points per shot …..they scored 64 pts on 61 shots ……comes out to about 1.05

I don’t have the exact numbers in front of me, but coming in, they are about a 1.25 PPS team on the year.

by dkbilson on Feb 14, 2010 9:27 PM PST reply actions

CBH showed some progression tonight in that he got alot of players some time

He knows that he doesn’t have the horses. I believe he is still giving it 100% but without the right players it just isn’t going to happen. This team needs this season to end so they can get on with developing for next year. BL with significant minutes and now we just need to see more JMM and MM to develope them as well. We all know who should sit more.
