Around SBN: Knicks 90, Raptors 87: "Shump and Lin wouldn't let us lose."

While everyone around BN is rightfully hyped about the recruiting job CRN is doing, one of CBH's star recruits and one of his main targets square off tonight on ESPN 2 at 8pm. Great way to kick off 24 hours of UCLA recruiting.

Oh Thank You!

I have been wanting to see Josh Smith play. I’ll check it out!

Thanks for the heads up poncho

I had read this last week, then totally forgot.

Quote from Jones as per the announcers:

“I want to be where I will have the ball in my hands.”

Interesting quote and I wonder what he thinks/knows about the system here.

He did make a nice dunk earlier, got up really high.

As for Josh Smith, he is big. BIG. He missed his first two bunnies, had a block and a rebound.

For the announcers tonight, it’s all Josh Smith and Terrence Jones.

Disappointed in Josh Smith

He doesn’t look like much right now. He doesn’t even look close to College ready. He doesn’t look above and beyond the level of talent on the court.

He looks fat, slow, and just stands around a lot. Maybe he realizes this and hopes BH will get him in shape for the next level.

That T Jones kid looks impressive though.

by BruinFaithful on Feb 2, 2010 8:10 PM PST reply actions

I somewhat heard he had a patella issue?

And was out about six weeks?

He did look slow though, getting back. He needs to get into shape.

Terrence Jones has 7 so far, all of the points fo rhis team, almost at the end of the first quarter. Impressive.

I will be shocked (pleasently)

If the staff Howland has right now can land either Jones or Zieglar or McCallum.

by Nestor on Feb 2, 2010 8:19 PM PST up reply actions

You mention the staff...

I’ve been curious for other opinions, do you guys think the loss of Coach Keating has significantly damaged our recruiting ability?

by Allofmybros on Feb 2, 2010 8:30 PM PST up reply actions

I think the track record

after Keating has left speaks for itself. After hoops season is over I will try to write more on this.

by Nestor on Feb 2, 2010 8:35 PM PST up reply actions

The funny thing is

the recruiting rankings have certainly been higher, but the game results are making him look like an key piece to our 05-08 success. I’m not sure if he was that important in picking out our recruiting targets, but who knows? I’m looking forward to you guys shedding some more light on this.

by Allofmybros on Feb 2, 2010 8:40 PM PST up reply actions

Keating

Was a huge reason UCLA was able to land recruits like DC and RW (who were not on everyone’s radar). UCLA got a great class (“ranking” wise) … however … it’s clear the staff hasn’t been doing a good job of evaluating talents.

by Nestor on Feb 2, 2010 8:42 PM PST up reply actions

Not to open a can of worms

But the freshman and next year’s recruiting class seem to be good classes so far. The real problem was the #1 super duds “led” by the amazing JH and DG who inspired their teammates with their great attitudes. If CBH can get Jones, Ziegler, or McCallum, I think he will have had back to back solid if unspectacular classes. But this is a topic for another day.

by bruinponcho on Feb 2, 2010 8:44 PM PST up reply actions

Jones at Point?

Maybe that’s how we could get him considering he likes to have the ball in his hands.

by uclaluv on Feb 2, 2010 8:18 PM PST reply actions

They call Jones the next Lamar Odom

Hrm. A big man that brings the ball up, rebounds, is everywhere.

Just don’t date any Kardashians.

by freesia39 on Feb 2, 2010 8:22 PM PST reply actions

His hands and instincts

make him far less Bobo-esque, but as I’ve fretted about in previous threads, his conditioning doesn’t look good at all. Given the use of the zone however, we might play to his preference anyways.

by Allofmybros on Feb 2, 2010 8:28 PM PST up reply actions

Motor

The biggest difference between JM and Smith is that Smith has a motor and JM doesn’t. JM is very slow even after losing the weight, whether it is on defense, going after loose balls, or getting down the court. Smith is not fast by any means, but he is much quicker and better coordinated.

by bruinponcho on Feb 2, 2010 8:30 PM PST up reply actions

I didn't realize...

…how humongous Josh Smith is. There is no way that he is 270. He is OL size, fat and bulky. I surely hope he gets slimmed down a little and into shape or we have another BoBo on our hands.

Jones is looking pretty good. I wouldn’t mind him on the team, other than those unnecessary 3pt attempts.

Jones is looking awesome

He’s definitely more of a college-ready player we could use to jump-start the team next year… By all accounts recruiting wise it doesn’t look like we have too good of a shot, but I WANT him.

by Allofmybros on Feb 2, 2010 8:26 PM PST reply actions

Jones is the real deal

This is the first time I have seen Terrence Jones play and wow am I impressed. He has a great body at 6’9, is super athletic, and is a great ballhandler. He doesn’t have a great shot yet, but he is definitely a future pro and would be a huge addition for CBH.

As for Smith, I love that he tried to take a charge on the first possession. He has very quick feet to block shots and is unselfish looking for his teammates. Just a shame his teammates don’t do a better job of getting him the ball down low.

Jones is putting on a show right now

I hope he doesn’t pick Kentucky. UW seems to be a good fit for his athleticism and his desire to play up-tempo, but you can never count Coach Calamari out of it for a top prospect.

by Allofmybros on Feb 2, 2010 8:34 PM PST up reply actions

Yup

I worry that Calipari will get to Jones somehow as he would excel in UK’s system. The fact that Jones is considering schools like UW, Oklahoma and UCLA though seems to show that he isn’t a typical AAU kid and gives me hope that we have a chance. I’d rather see him end up at UW than Kentucky as I’d rather have a kid as talented as him in the pac 10 then playing for a cheat like Calipari.

by bruinponcho on Feb 2, 2010 8:38 PM PST up reply actions

His play to me screams Kentucky

Especially if he might be a one-and-done’r.

by freesia39 on Feb 2, 2010 8:39 PM PST up reply actions

Yup.

Using primarily one-and-done kids usually doesn’t work out (as we’ve seen) but Calamari seems to be buying his from Cosco and building some STACKED teams.

by Allofmybros on Feb 2, 2010 8:43 PM PST up reply actions

He just got it down low

and missed the basket inside, as I yelled at him to use his body.

He’ll fit right in!

Blasphemy!

The announcer earlier said that missing FT’s were forgivable at this level!

by freesia39 on Feb 2, 2010 8:57 PM PST reply actions

Smith blocked Jones

but fouled him, not called.

Jones went up again on Smith, made the basket, was fouled by Smith again, no call.

Perhaps this is SPTR training ground?

by freesia39 on Feb 2, 2010 9:01 PM PST reply actions

If Smith is our future

then we are in trouble. I am not excited about his motor. He seems lazy most of the time. He has very good feet, but he is not active enough. I think he’ll be a decent player, but he reminds me more of Bobo than he does Kevin Love. I am not making a joke when I say that. Having never seen him play before tonight, I was hoping that he would be closer to Love than Bobo. In no way did I expect him to be as talented as Love………..those kind of players don’t come around often. I did expect him to have a better skill set and be more dominating in the low post. What I saw instead was a player who didn’t seem to go hard most of the time and will have trouble against guys his size.

Reeves and Honeycutt are the future. Smith will come in and hopefully compliment them, but unless CBH gets his butt in shape and can get the guy to play like a Ben Ball Warrior………….then we will be much improved, but not a national title contender.

Final recap

In what was a rather poorly played high school game, Terrence Jones’ Jefferson team beat Josh Smith’s Kentwood squad.
Jones: 20 points 6 rebounds 4 steals, 3 assists
Smith: 11 points, 10 rebounds, 6 blocks, 3 assists

The thing that we have to keep in mind is this is high school. Jefferson had a guy in front and back of Smith for most of the game daring the rest of Smith’s teammates to shoot. Conversely, Jones can handle the ball and had the ball in his hands a lot on the perimeter and thus had a much better looking game.

I am very encouraged by Smith as he should be a great compliment to RN in that he is a very capable passer for someone his age and has a great frame. He needs to have better conditioning, but I really don’t want him to lose too much weight as his ability to throw his weight around is what makes him such a great prospect. The biggest difference between Smith and JMM is that Smith has a much better frame than JM (wide shoulders and hips) and is much quicker than JM (neither are fast).

As for Jones, boy I hope CBH can get him. He cant shoot too well and probably will never be a great shooter, but he reminds me of a quicker more athletic version of TH. He has the talent to be an immediate impact player and be a great defender with his athleticism and long arms.

by bruinponcho on Feb 2, 2010 9:42 PM PST reply actions

correction

Smith had 9 points, 11 rebounds, and 7 blocks.

by bruinponcho on Feb 3, 2010 7:21 AM PST up reply actions

best hope for smith....

….is to become a Dexter Pittman (of Texas). Huge at first but conditioned down into a star athlete with endurance…

GO BRUINS!!! CHEER LIKE CHAMPIONS!!!

by bk bruin on Feb 3, 2010 1:31 AM PST reply actions

that is exactly who he reminded me of.

looks like the sort of guy who would best be served as a backup for a year while getting into college shape.

Having said that, I was equally disappointed when I saw Kevin Love in high school going against Kyle Singler’s team, in terms of KL’s physical condition.

I think Smith is probably in between KL and Pittman – he looks more skilled than Pittman, not as skilled as KL.

My other concern with Smith – he only seems to get rebounds on his own misses. The opponents got way too many offensive boards.
