Softball
It was smooth sailing for #4 UCLA last week versus UC Santa Barbara and in the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament at Easton Stadium. The week's first game in Santa Barbara was a 14-0 five inning affair thanks to the mercy rule and the second went six innings, but UCLA still mercied the Gauchos, 11-1. A 9-0 mercy rule victory opened the tournament and was then followed by another mercy rule victory, this time 8-0 over Cal Poly. An 8-0 mercy rule victory UC Davis was the Bruins' fifth consecutive win by way of mercy, a new UCLA record. The streak ended versus Northridge, but the Bruins still won 7-2 before closing out the week one more mercy win, this time 11-0 over Portland St. This week, Cal St. Fullerton, then the Cathedral Classic that includes #14 Ohio St., #15 Texas, #21 Northwestern and #25 Baylor should be more of a test for the 10-1 Bruins.
Women's Tennis
Jump, jump, jump. That's what UCLA did, jumping from #12 in the national rankings to #4. The Bruins had no issues with it though, defeating LMU, 7-0, and Cal Poly, 6-1, to improve to 9-1 on the season. A visit from #3 Cal and #11 Stanford looms.
Women's Water Polo
On the road in Berkeley, #4 UCLA had a tough battle on their hands versus #3 Cal. Down 5-3 after three quarters, the Bruins stormed back and defeated the Bears, 7-6, in a their first MPSF match of the year. Things were easy the following day as UCLA beat #15 UC Davis, 8-3, then dispatched of Sonoma St., 24-4. Now 9-3 with a 1-0 MPSF record, UCLA play in the UC Irvine Invitational.
Men's Volleyball
The #6 Bruins opened the week at #8 UC Santa Barbara in the final match of their five-match road trip. UCLA had one ugly set, but that could not derail the Bruins as they beat the Gauchos 30-28, 30-25, 19-30, 30-24 to finish their road trip 4-1. UCLA then had a big match to come to as they hosted top-ranked Cal St. Northridge at Pauley Pavilion. The Bruins dropped the first two sets and were in a deep hole, but they took the next two and then the final set, 15-12, to beat the Matadors for the second time this year. Winners of six of their last eight, UCLA is now 9-6, 8-4 in MPSF play and set to play #14 UC San Diego and #10 Long Beach St. this week.
Men's Tennis
It was an easy week for #6 UCLA with just one match on the slate. In that match, the Bruins came out slow, losing the doubles point, but they stormed back to easily defeat San Diego St. 5-2. UCLA is now 4-2 on the season with UC Irvine coming to Westwood before the Bruins head to the Bay Area to play Cal and #8 Stanford over the weekend.
Women's Gymnastics
Coming off of their second loss of the year, #9 UCLA didn't have any time to sulk. #3 Oregon St. was visiting Pauley Pavilion and the Bruins clearly weren't sulking because they came out on fire. Vanessa Zamarippa led the way with her third consecutive all-around win and the Bruins followed in sensational form, beating the Beavers 197.375-196.325. The Bruins' 197.375 score was not just a season-high for the team, it was the highest that any UCLA team had scored in five years. Now, UCLA will head to Fullerton for a battle with the Titans.
Men's Golf
It took a comeback and a season-best -10 team score, but the #14 Bruins did it to mount a charge and win the Battle at the Beach tournament.. UCLA will enjoy the win for a week as they're off this week.
Women's Basketball
It doesn't have to be pretty, but it's effective. Two ugly games for UCLA, two wins for UCLA. The Bruins beat Washington, 73-55, behind Markel Walker's 19 points, then Rebekah Gardner scored 19 for the Bruins in a 93-58 win over Washington St. Winners of eight of their last nine, UCLA is in second in the Pac-10 with a 11-3 conference record to go with a 18-7 overall record. The Bruins will be at the Oregon schools this weekend for the final road trip of the year and Saturday's 2 pm PST game will be on FSN.
