[Update] Carnell Lake Steps Down as Cornerbacks Coach

Link

Carnell Lake, UCLA cornerbacks coach, will not return next season for family reasons, a source inside the program said.

Former UCLA and NFL defensive back James Washington is believed to be among those who will be considered to replace Lake.

Per the LA Times due to family reasons. I think he did a pretty good job considering he didn't have Hester to work with throughout most of the year. Hopefully the next coach can develop our younger corners seeing as we won't have ATV this coming season.

UPDATE (N): Here is CRN via the official release:

"Carnell did a great job coaching our cornerbacks last season and will always be remembered as a great Bruin," said Neuheisel. "Carnell is also a great father and he felt this was in the best interest of his family. We wish him all the best in the future and know he will still be involved in our program as a proud alum."

Good luck to Coach Lake. GO BRUINS.

Sorry to see Carnell go

I hope CRN gives James Washington a good look. He bleeds Blue and Gold and his commentary on the team and the way it plays has always been perceptive.

James could be very interesting

While he struggled a lot as a commentator, his underlying analysis on our team has always been pretty good. He is also well connected to the LA high school scene and has been a terrific ambassador for Neuheisel’s UCLA program.

Will be interesting to see how this shakes out. I think Lake did a great job in his first year as a college coach. Best of luck to him.

It’s unfortunate that Carnell is leaving, but James Washington would be a great addition. He is a true Bruin and a proven winner. Hope that works out!

Definitely

He seems to have an emotional investment in the program which is always a great quality in any coach.

Okay, this bugs me ...

how come every time we need an assistant coach, thoughts immediately turn to “what former Bruin is available?” It won’t be long until Ed O’Bannon is mentioned as a replacement for the assistant coaches on the basketball team.

It works out sometimes, but it’s just such a provincial way of looking at things. Instead of bringing in James Washington, why don’t we bring in whoever is coaching DBs at whatever mid-major school has the best defensive backs?

If Washington gets the gig, I’ll root for him and trust that RN knows what he’s doing. But in the abstract I’d rather see us hire a great DB coach with some experience, rather than just promote the first Bruin that comes to mind. If it happens to be the same guy, that’s fine, but if it isn’t, I’d rather hire the great, experienced assistant. Hiring someone basically for their Bruin ties to me says we can’t hire the best person, we need to always hire someone with prior ties to the school.

I think a balance of both longtimers and newcomers to the Blue and Gold is ideal.

Guys that can sell the school can be great for recruiting, while guys with fresh ideas that have been known to work in other places (i.e., schemes, plays, teaching techniques, etc.) can help keep longtime company-guys on their toes and avoid complacency.

Blame the great minds in the marketing department in the early 80's

Back when Walt Hazzard became coach, UCLA sent out bumper stickers to season ticket holders that said “UCLA Basketball is Hazzardous to Your Health.” They weren’t kidding.

Oh man

Does someone have a picture of those?

by Nestor on Feb 23, 2010 10:52 AM PST up reply actions

Importantly, though, JW appears to have NO coaching experience.

If I’m wrong, please add the info and I’ll gladly denounce my lack of research beyond the mere wiki page.

Given CB’s slow-starting defense, I’d much rather have an experienced DB coach back there to help bolster our DC. CB may yet improve, but I don’t want to worry about 2 relative youngsters on that side of the ball.

DB coach

We have a solid secondary coach in Tim Hundley. Coach Lake was only focusing on CBs. I understand where A is coming from. I have always been in the camp over merit rather than previous connections. However, at the same time there are other factors in play here. We need to have another kickass recruiter in this staff who can help CRN challenge in the City, we also need staff who can relate to young men who are aspiring to get to the next level and have the credential to back it with superbowl rings.

That said the main question I have with regards to JDub is his commitment. Can he handle a grueling work schedule and a recruiting mindset from CRN that will require him to bring it every day?

by Nestor on Feb 22, 2010 11:53 AM PST up reply actions

Exactly

We need the recruiting and mentoring that J Dub can bring to the table. He is a solid role model and though he lacks coaching experience, like you said, N we have Tim Hundley. Hiring someone like James fills another must for us, and maybe we will be happily surprised with his coaching skills as well!

I guess this is all very premature, so we’ll see…

That said

I would be very interested to hear the name of other candidates in the mix (if their names can be made publicly available in due time).

by Nestor on Feb 22, 2010 1:20 PM PST up reply actions

OK, I can see that. I forgot about Hundley.

Perhaps JW can fill a “coach-at-large/ troubleshooter” type role.

There should be room on a staff for ONE guy like JW

For the reasons Nestor mentions. A role model who can recruit like hell. Now, JW better be able to recruit like hell.

sad to see Carnell go.

Beyond his abilities as a coach and his home grown love for all things Bruin, he was a beast on Sundays, and carved himself a great reputation among all fans of the sport.

Hope for the best from Coach Lake

I just wish he would’ve showed our young corners how to lay the wood like he did.

by Bruins#1 on Feb 22, 2010 12:55 PM PST reply actions

Not surprising

I believe Carnell participated in the NFL Minority Coaches program this summer which is a very prestigious appointment. (Lubbie Smith, herm Edwards and Marvin Lewis are all graduates) so he is an up and coming coaching prospect.

I played HS football with Carnell and speak with him on occasion still, and he was very vague about his future. He wanted to make sure coaching was something he was passionate about before jumping in completely.

During a recent round of golf I was very fortunate to play with CRN (won it in the True Blue Auction) we spoke about Carnell. He thought Carnell had a bright future as a coach and given his selection to participate in the NFL Minority Coaches Program, CRN wasn’t hopeful that Carnell would be around next season.

He will be missed, but hopefully this experience will help him succeed in whatever he chooses to pursue in the future.

That would be a great move on the part of Lake

… and it’s a win/win situation for our program to have a Bruin coaching in the NFL. Even better way to market future talent that UCLA can once again be a pipeline to the NFL.

by Nestor on Feb 22, 2010 1:19 PM PST up reply actions

GL to Coach Lake

Would have loved him to stay. Don’t know who the other candidates are but I think JDub would be a great addition. He has been itching to coach and we can all see the passion he has for all things Blue & Gold. I think JDub would turn out to be a monster on the recruiting trail selling something he has lived and with his Super Bowl rings he should get the benefit of the doubt when stepping into recruits homes. I think his hire would be gain approval within the city and he could replace E Scott who played an integral part in UCLA having success in the City Section. He may not have experience but I don’t doubt that he’ll be carrying his own weight sooner rather than later.

by BlueReign on Feb 22, 2010 2:17 PM PST reply actions

You can bet

that JDub will have no problems going head to head against Lame & Ogre. E Scott had baggage but I’ll forever love him for representing while our alleged coach didn’t have the balls to take it to the trogans.

Coaching Experience for this position

Lets not forget, Carnell had NO coaching experience when he was hired.

I think this is the type of position where you can sacrifice experience in favor of some Bruin ties and a potential to recruit well, maybe nationally vs. locally. You have a Seconday coach and a Def Head Coach already who can make up for any coaching deficiencies the candidate may have.

That being said, I get the provincial argument made by Achilles. A talented teacher of the DB position is important. I also don’t think JW will give up is announcing gig for this position. It will be interesting to see the other names we’re considering, if they become available.

Anyone think we don’t hire anyone so there is more $ to pay a certain OC next year?

by Bald Eagle on Feb 22, 2010 2:38 PM PST reply actions

Maybe

Another name that could factor into the equation (not to replace Coach Lake) if there is some shifting of duties is Intern, Vae Tata. Gotta to think that if a spot opens up and it works for CRN that Tata will get his shot.

Wasn't JW ready to give up the $$$ when CRN passed him over for another position?

I know, I’m old, and don’t remember so good — but I think JW was ready to make the move back home.
