Center Court: UCLA Basketball (v. Oregon State) Open Thread

Oregon St. Beavers at UCLA Bruins, Feb 25, 2010 8:00 PM PST

Well rejoice everyone. Just two more regular season games left in which Nikola Ragovic will be dressing up in UCLA home unis. How about that for a positive note to start a game thread.  In about half an hour Bruins (12-14, 7-7) will tip off against the Oregon State Beavers (12-14, 6-8) for their final home weekend of the Pac-10 conference season.

As detailed throughout the Bruin our guys are bruised and battered and pretty severely shorthanded against a well coached Oregon State team, which has had some decent victories in recent weeks. Still Bruins at least schematically match up pretty well and if they play with focus and effort for entire 40 minutes, they will have a shot to regain a little momentum heading into last regular season home game at Pauley. The Bruins have won the last 10 meetings and have an over all record of 86-33 (.723) against the Beavers.

The tip off is scheduled for 8:07 PST on FSN and Prime Ticket. Donnie Mac is going to be in the house providing color so that should be fun. You can read up on all of our musings leading up to this game here. If you want to follow the game online you can do so via our official site. As always, we will be here in the game threads with our rapid fire takes and commentary. So let's get this party started. Fire away.

GO BRUINS.

ML for 3

Not real happy we’re starting off shooting 3s but glad he made it.

Following on a phone in San Salvador...

… so commentary on how our center position is going is especially appreciated. Go Bruins!

San Salvador

strong memories from a trip their, many years ago — the guest of the priests who were killed by a death squad.

Loved the country, and people — and Liberation Theology.

Hilarious. Not the best officiating but we’ll take it.

TH for 3

Nice ball movement again.

we want to keep the game close -- more exciting that way

pounding it inside just wins games — no style points

Personnel

We have MAH, JA, ND, MR and TH on floor. But your right we should drive on these guys AND make sure TH touches the ball every possession.

by DCBruins on Feb 25, 2010 8:42 PM PST up reply actions

We were doing just fine passing it around

and driving inside early on. That wasn’t an issue early. Even Hamid drove on them.

by Nestor on Feb 25, 2010 8:43 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah but none of those guys think that way Natually

ML makes a difference. I am not saying he is a true point but he is going down low and MOVING without the ball opening up for other guys.

MAH, JA, MR are all content to stay outside and look three first, then maybe drive.

OSU has no answer for TH

He needs to touch the ball every possession.

Pac-10 update

ASU holds a 64-60 lead over Stanford with 11 seconds remaining @ Maples
the OJ’s lead Oregon 36-31 early in the 2nd half @ Costco
Cal beat the hell out of The Standard @ Haas earlier tonight (95-71)

Cool Stat

We have but 4 to’s,

Only 1 by ML and 0 by JA

by Class of 66 on Feb 25, 2010 8:53 PM PST reply actions

Yeah but notice our PG has 0

It is kind of strange because he is having a good game. Maybe it is a good sign for next year if he can go to 2. And this game he is playing more like a 2.

by DCBruins on Feb 25, 2010 9:05 PM PST up reply actions

But, we are getting beat on the boards 15-10

probably because we’ve played small for lack of big guys

Rebounding and Our Second Best Player Tonight

We are losing 15 to 10 but CBH keeping TH at the weakside of the zone has really worked. TH has 5 rebounds, half our total. ND and Bobo have 1 rebound at 5 (but 3 Blocks). ML is our second leading rebounder.

Actually it seems like ML has more than 1 TO and he has his usual stupid frustration foul but he has played well, been a force on defense and second leading scorer. He is having the second best game, distant second, to TH.

by DCBruins on Feb 25, 2010 8:58 PM PST reply actions

Our inside weakness is showing

Burton for OSU is going to get his career high tonight.

by DCBruins on Feb 25, 2010 9:10 PM PST reply actions

Bobo Please

OSU is going keep pounding inside otherwise. Bobo at least can block and affect shots

by DCBruins on Feb 25, 2010 9:12 PM PST reply actions

MAH and Bobo please

MAH’s lack of speed won’t hurt this game and Bobo can block shots and take up space.

by DCBruins on Feb 25, 2010 9:15 PM PST reply actions

OSU Center

Plays up high, the guards spread wide. He has to go up and cover as OSU Center can pass and score from there. ND has done the same. The bigger Q is we seem to be playing a 4 corner offense with ML at the FT line. It is ridiculous to see Bobo in the corner. We went away from that now but it was strange.

by DCBruins on Feb 25, 2010 9:35 PM PST up reply actions

Ha

D-Mac is right, that in and out was ridiculous.

Yeah we did

I had already let out a full GROAN by the time that ball had found its way out.

Where did our run go?

Oh yeah, Bobo is out and Drago is in.

by LongtimeBru on Feb 25, 2010 9:34 PM PST reply actions

Ice skating off and game on in Tampa

I can’t figure out why we are ahead. They look much more alive and animated. They work the ball against the zone almost at will, and they get the ball to their scorer who manages to make those pesky two foot shots. We seem to be looking for the pass that will give us an extra-long three pointer, usually fired up by the Brickmeister.

And when we get a lead, we turn the ball over.

This team is just about unwatchable. And since I have to have the sound off, it makes it difficult to be a fan.

We are winning b/c of TH; it is close because

MR only has 3 points and ML is playing badly in the 2nd half

by DCBruins on Feb 25, 2010 9:47 PM PST reply actions

Yeah

He was bad for a bit and OSU came back. When he plays well tonight we take a lead

by DCBruins on Feb 25, 2010 9:55 PM PST up reply actions

Yep

with those long arms, TH can become the new glue, a la LRMAM, but with a decidedly better offensive game.

ML was not really point tonight

And he had a better game. MR brought the ball up a lot. It was a response to the 1-3-1 but still a good sign for next year when ML hopefully won’t be our point.
