Center Court: UCLA Basketball (v. Oregon) Open Thread
Oregon Ducks at UCLA Bruins, Feb 27, 2010 2:00 PM PST
Here we go. Senior Day fesitivities will start in less than half hour. James Keefe, Michael Roll, Spencer Soo, Mustafa Abdul-Hamid and Nikola Dragovic will be introduced at approximately 1:50 p.m. Three other Bruins seniors will be introduced as well, including Daniel Arevalo (student video coordinator), Frank Russo (student athletic trainer) and Andrew Nobe (student manager). Don't forget UCLA is also celebrating the 40th anniversary of the 1970 NCAA Championship team, which is going to take place during half time.
Bruins lead the series against the Duckies 81-26 (.757). We have won six straight games against those guys in Pauley Pavilion by an average of 14 points (77-63). That said today's game against the Ducks is going to be tough for the reasons described in today's roundup. You can read up on all of our musings leading up to this game here. If you want to follow the game online you can do so via our official site.
The tip off is scheduled for 2:07 PST on Prime Ticket. Donnie Mac is going to be in the house providing color so that should be fun. As always, we will be here in the game threads with our rapid fire takes and commentary. So let's get this party started. Fire away.
GO BRUINS.

JK is warming up in uniform
Could CBH let him start and pull him at the first whistle so he can step on John and Nell Wooden Court one last time?

CAL is PAC 10 Regular Season Champs
They just beat ASU. First championship since 1960.
TV?
Anyone know how those of us outside So Cal (I’m in CHicago) can see the game? I’m listening on the internet, but would love to see on the tube (via the internet). The Nation often has that info. Thanks…
Wondering that myself....
It seems I’m going to get the UCLA v. Oregon WOMENS game. No disrespect to the Bruin Babes, but I was hoping for Sr Day mens.
Everyone applauded

It may be Senior Day but the Sophmores are going to be key
TH will be great. MR will be consistent. ND well, nuff said. But the game may be determined by ML, JA, and Bobo.
Don't expect much from any sr. other than MR
but I do want to honor the tradition and let all sr’s start.
sjh
Wasn't saying that for starting lineup
Just saying for the game. Actually, I would rather would see MAH over JA.
i'll be missing this one
so y’all be sure to make the appropriate cheers for drago far me.

A quick note of thoughts of prayers
We have few BNers who are from Hawaii, including Tydides. Hawaii just evacuated more than 100,000 from lower areas because of threat of Tsunami due to earthquake in Chile. Hope everything is ok. Scary situation at least from what I am reading.
Called my daughter (who's at UH) this morning
She seemed about as worried as people in Southern Cal during a minor earthquake.
But yeah, keeping half an eye on the news coverage.
Hurt himself during warmup
I missed it but I heard he came down funny doing a layup and his knee buckled.

Olympic scoring -- must figure in degree of difficulty
and for us jacking up outside shots is “mandatory”
sjh
Who?
We have no inside players left. Unless you can convince ND to go low. And he looks hurt. (I know.)
On the other hand we do need to drive!
CBH adjusted
Note, MR passed on the three, all our shots have been inside since last break. O has 0 inside players. This is the game for BL (depending on ankle), for us to drive, and hopefully a little Bobo.
But mostly let’s go inside.
hell, why am I checking in?

and we are settling for jumpers
Donnie Mac just ripped them and ripping them as I type it. We look lethargic.

Anyone have any suggestions?
This could be Coach Wooden's last ever game in Pauley
I am glad our guys are showing a sense of urgency and intensity.
Ragovic
In hi last seven games, Rago has averaged 3 rebounds a game, and just 2 defensive rebounds a game. How tough is Rags? During that stretch he has drawn only 9 personal fouls in those 7 games.
Calling this guy lazy would be an insult to lazy players.
BTW awesome coaching job by Howland
We choked against these guys the first time by taking 33 3 point shots. We come out firing 7 3s in our first 8 attempts.
On defense I meant
He never got back. Playing with same craptastic effort he has been playing his pathetic career at UCLA.
I wonder if Rago even knows
what it means to have Wooden in Pauley and perhaps watching one of his last games ever at Pauley.
It's one thing to be bad -- to lack talent
I can understand and accept that.
But, there is no excuse for playing without energy or intensity.
Especially in front of Coach.
Do these guys not know who he is and what it means to be on his court?
sjh
Show of hands
who else is watching our girls play the Ducks up in Eugene?
FSN West
I’ve got them on the TV and the guys streaming on the comp.
Lane turnover = pulled. Drago stupid pass...
stays in the game.
There’s no better way to lose a team or player than to play favorites.
Bill Walton
nearly gets dismissed from the team when he doesn’t get his hair cut.
Rago dicks around and gets extra playing time.
Formerly UCLA Class of 86
whenever the broadcast mentions longmire...
who else gets visions of this?
takes a stupid fucking shot with 17 seconds left in the click
and then gives up a fucking offensive rebound. This garbage should be benched to start the second.
ML is as well
He is playing smarter and go to the hoop
Another great defensive effort by Lane
leading to a break. Why was Lane benched all f**king season for this piece of garbage?
Lane should start the second half
Rago shouldn’t get more than 5-7 mins off the bench in second. Just a disgraceful coaching effort by Howland.
Lines on "Senior" Day
Rago 18 mins, 0 points, 1 steal, 1 assist
Lane 10 mins, 2 rebounds, 2 points
Why should Rago get more than 7 mins in second half?
actually a new low for Ragovic
Why Howland is ruining senior day infront of Wooden by playing this guy, it defies explanation.
This is disgusting
we play no D
we can’t rebound
we can’t move the ball upcourt so we cross the line with less time on the clock
Then we aimlessly pass around the perimeter either jacking up a shot or running the clock down so our shot is a last forced shot
just terrible for a team that has played together all season
sjh
It's on Howland
For setting the tone by having players with that kind of loser mindset on the court.
What' most troubling is lack of intensity and effort
and the total lack of improvement during the year.
sjh
Again why should a team try hard
When Howland lets his pet play 33+ mins a game without trying hard?
i was fooled, N
at the midpoint of the season i was starting to think these guys were gelling together and would fight for games but ultimately fall short because of a lack of talent. i would read all the comments on here and felt, in general, we were all being too tough on the team and not showing enough patience… but to see them “go through the motions” particularly on senior day and in front of Coach, disgusts me. I hate to admit it, but the (lack of) motivation HAS to fall on CBH.
by DoubleTroubleBruin on Feb 27, 2010 3:03 PM PST up reply actions
What is happening in first half is not an aberration
we have seen this all year. It is stunning to me that Ragovic has gotten 18 mins despite scoring 0 rebounds, 0 points and 0 effort in general. Yet he has gotten more time than Bobo. You can’t blame rest of the team for quitting on the coach for this kind of negligent game management. Simply disgraceful.
Remember it's the goat
However 66 says it’s a good looking goat. Not sure how 66 knows though.
Geezer in training.
That was interesting.
I knew Carroll was fast, but 10.3 is a good college time and he did it in high school. That is about what Warren Edmondson used to run, if my memory serves me.
In addition to our brothers and sisters in hi
Keep in mind those in the LA foothill area; was just pouring here in Glendale.
Geezer in training.
We need rebounds on D and guys who can go inside
Best lineup right now may be TH, MR, ML, BL and I would prefer MAH but I am sure CBH will chose JA or ND. We went M2M to help with rebounding. I am not sure it did.
Yep, pretty much
it’s going to take a while for Howland to build back trust. He has shattered it this season. I still have good will left but I don’t trust his coaching instincts any more.
People tell me that korean bbq goat is good.
Odd the wife, whose korean, doesn’t think so.
Geezer in training.
Lane is still hurt ..
… but still giving a better effort on D, then Rago has given the entire freaking cursed season.
To anyone at the game
how was the half time celebration for the ’70 NC team
"I can't believe I ate the whole thing" Homer Simpson
Why can't we play Bobo and Moser
instead of Rago. Our defense is getting freaking shredded since he came in.
The way we are getting killed inside, why not have Bobo in there.
Unless he is on CBH’s sh_t list again.
66 .. stop
this is ridiculous and let’s be honest with ourselves. Why should we respect this kid when he is showing no respect for our school?
Uhm
I think it would have looked a little different if we tried either Bobo or even moser for honeycutt. Those guys would have made a modicum of effort.
Sometimes I get this weird feeling
that CBH wants us to lose
"I can't believe I ate the whole thing" Homer Simpson
Sure but the last baskets were all on JA
Notice they didn’t score with JA out. I realize he has been hurt but his defense is terrible.
CBH realized that and went to MAH for DEFENSE,
Embarrassing that they are doing this in front of Coach AGAIN.
This is not the UCLA basketball he preached. Not even close.
And this could be his last game ever at Pauley
and Howland is stinkign up with disgraceful coaching.
I was going to post something like that . . .
. . . but I don’t want to think about it.

i like how channelsurfing is streaming the women's game not the men's game
that will prevent another ruined saturday
Fine Agree
Right now it is BL at 5 but I don’t blame him at all. JA gave a 3. Porter will get 60 if JA stays on him
Anderson is not the first UCLA guard
to struggle against Porter or an Oregon pg.
We just have never had garbage like Rago playing at forward.
That was not on Anderson
In Howland’s scheme we have always required our bigs to give modicum of defensive effort. Anderson is a soph and playing heart. Stop attacking Anderson to cover up for Rago. It’s ridiculous.
NOt covering for ND
he stinks and is not trying, you’re right. But JA can’t play m2m
Donnie Mac criticizing CBH's clock management...
uses last time out with 12 min on the clock
by DoubleTroubleBruin on Feb 27, 2010 3:26 PM PST reply actions
Donny Mac is so right about jacking up outside shots
he has been chanting the mantra all year long
sjh
is it my imagination or are we showing a little bit of fight?
by DoubleTroubleBruin on Feb 27, 2010 3:35 PM PST reply actions
If TH stays in game, we will win
If he fouls out . . .
Notice CBH took out ND for BL
Even after ND scored. He knows that BL is our best 5 right now. Hopefully he will keep this lineup in.
I love him to BUT
he can’t rebound yet. We need boards.
Would BL be playng if RN were healthy?
he should have played with RN all year long.
What if MM would be this good if given a chance?
sjh
If he does not bring BL back after the break I would say yes
I also think he should go MAH over JA but I will shut up.
99% of the time: JA = chicken with head cut off
But that other 1%…
If we don't bring Lane back in
after this TO, I will be convinced that Howland wants us to lose.
Formerly UCLA Class of 86
Breaking news: Honeycutt to forgo final three-plus UCLA seasons, enter NBA Draft
After advising with Jordan Farmar, Arron Afflalo, Russell Westbrook, Kevin Love, Luc Ricbahrd Mbah a Moute, and especially Jrue Holiday. (But not Darren Collison)
The only thing that could make this more painful ...
would be if you were listening to it on the radio with Roberts and Murray.
see TH yelling at team out of time out?

Just leave JA.
Transfer to a D-II school because “WAAAAAAA BEN’S HOLDING ME BACK WAAAAAAAA!” Hopeless loser.
Lol. How else could 2009-10 Senior Day end
Than with one last brick from Rago?
We should not have lost this gam
CBH needed BL and MAH in at the end.
I was on the fence with CBH before
but now fully in your camp. He blew this game completely. Horrible.
by 84 on Feb 27, 2010 3:57 PM PST up reply actions
I am not in any "camp"
I am not advocating for firing of Howland. All I have suggested is that there have been serious issues with his coaching this season and we need to take a hard look at what he does in next two seasons.
that is the camp I am talking about too. Except he needs to show progress next year.
Two years seems like a long leash.
by 84 on Feb 27, 2010 4:01 PM PST up reply actions
Fitting for the season.
Rago clanks one that matters. Roll hits one that doesn’t.
by orlandobruin on Feb 27, 2010 3:58 PM PST up reply actions
Are we now guaranteed a losing record for the year ....
maybe not … we need to win the last two then win some in the tournament.
Howland should go - sorry I had to post that, but I am very frustrated like the rest of you.
by Forever a Bruin on Feb 27, 2010 3:57 PM PST reply actions
Disagree ...
I think he needs to make changes on his staff … but there is no obvious better head coach in the wings. He needs to make changes to the staff to improve the recruiting and be more of an asset to him. He screwed himself by hiring a couple of weak assistant coaches and it’s showing.
Anderson Anderson Anderson
Well that was a huge dissapointment but sums up this season. At least that’s the last time we have to see porter. Does eveyone fully understand what it means to have a competent confident point guard especially in tight games. Anderson plays scarred and that was never more evident then both those unforced ridiculous turnovers. He is just not the guy. Jones enroll early can’t wait to have a point guard with D1 skills
by uclamike on Feb 27, 2010 4:01 PM PST via mobile reply actions
FYI ..
the women outscored Oregon by 20 in the second half.
They’re going to make the NCAA tournament, I think they have 20 wins.
Maybe Primeticket should be showing them instead.
by 84 on Feb 27, 2010 4:03 PM PST up reply actions
Wow, what a great turnaround
our women have more cojones than our men do. with the exception of MR, TH, RN and Bl
sjh
next year
Biggest plus is no more Dragdownavich. I like most can overlook or at least understand a lack of talent but never a lack of effort. I have coached at various levels mainly womens club of late and have never seen nor tolerated such a poor display of interest in playing better than he shows. Let him go early -give him his degree and thank his parents for comming.
Yes. women are 20-7 and 13-3 in PAC-10 Congrats ladies. They close season at home against ASU & UA next weekend with Saturday Senior Day-Come out to show our support of a positive representative of UCLA basketball
Caldwell should coach the men's team
can’t be any worse than the sh!t job benji did.
Also have lamented that we have not used Kareem in any role over the years
I think he could really help bobo
sjh
I'll write more about this later -- but the bad coaching is not in schemes
it’s in having the wrong players on the floor at critical times.
Even with the limited talent, we are not getting the most out of that talent and have not all year.
sjh
Nice Comeback...but terrible finish...
I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a poor passing point guard as in JA. Especially at home, final game of the year, against the last place Pac-10 team. This loss typifies the season. They looked awful losing, and the end of the regular season is thankfully here. I hope they take some time this off-season to get better. Lane looks ready for some solid minutes, and of course Honeycutt will be the star of the team. Aside from those two and RN, the rest is wide open in my opinion. Maybe we could scrounge up a walk-on or two between now and the fall. I hope Howland takes the time not being spent gearing up for and playing in the NCAA tourney and spends it on the phone trying to find another Keating to help with recruiting and some backcourt players. I should say that if he were to take some footage of all of the errant passes, air balls, etc. coming from our guards this year, it would be quite a montage to convince some 5 star players to come on board ASAP! I wish the team well and that they put this dreadful season behind them and look to the future. I know I am already thinking about football.
Lady Bruins are in
With today’s win, our lady Bruins should be most likely in. The only bad mark is that we are 1-4 against the ranked team. With 20 wins today we should be OK. As for the men, I am looking forward to next year already. I definitely feel we should have a better team. TH, BL, and RN should start with Josh Smith and Jones. ML is th 6th man in my book.
Hey, did anyone notice that one guy is not smiling in the senior pic above?
Ahh, it’s probably nothing.
