[UPDATE x 4] Signing Day Open Thread: There Is No Place Like It
We've talked and talked and talked. The recruits have talked and talked and talked. Everyone has done too much talking, but today guys put pen to paper and make it official. Once guys sign their National Letter of Intent, they are bound to the school they have chosen. Today, somewhere between 20 and 25 players will sign for UCLA and officially become Bruins. You can check on the entire UCLA commitment list here.
As we've mentioned plenty of times, there are seven unannounced guys that we've got to keep an eye on today. They are:
- Owamagbe Odighizuwa- DE, Portland, OR
Ricky Heimuli- DT, Salt Lake City, UT (Oregon)- Dietrich Riley- DB, La Canada, CA
- Josh Shirley- LB, Fontana, CA
- Anthony Jefferson- ATH, Los Angeles, C
- Jordan Zumwalt- LB, Huntington Beach, CA
Giovanni Di Poalo- OL, Ventura, CA (Southern Cal)
It is highly unlikely that the Bruins land Shirley so don't hold your breath on that one. The other six are all fair game though and we'll be waiting on them throughout the day. Di Poalo and Zumwalt will not announce their decisions, but merely sign their LOI and fax it to the school of their choice. The other six will make announcements that you can all watch. Here's your announcement schedule (all times pacific):
- 9:30 am- Rickey Heimuli, ESPNU
- 11:30 am- Owamagbe Odighizuwa, ESPNU
- 12:00 pm- Anthony Jefferson, FS Prime Ticket
- 1:30 pm- Dietrich Riley, ESPNU
- 12:35 pm- Josh Shirley, FS Prime Ticket
If you want to keep up on all the recruiting nationwide, stay tuned to ESPNU, which will have Signing Day coverage until 4 pm PST. FS Prime Ticket will have their own show with a focus on the local guys from noon until one.
Just how is CRN selling the program? His twitter says it all:
Making the final push to encourage standout SAs to join our family at my alma mater. UCLA! There's no place like it!
I don't think anyone here would disagree, Coach. So here we go. It's Signing Day and this is signing day central for UCLA fans. We'll have all the updates right here as they happen and please share any thoughts, comments or questions you have below. It will be a fun one so make it an all day affair, leading right up to our Signing Day podcast tonight at 6:30 pm PST. By the end of today, over 20 kids will sign on the dotted line for UCLA to find out why there is no place like it.
UPDATE: Giovanni Di Poalo decided to be a Trojan, but the Bruins picked up a big one in Jordan Zumwalt, beating out Stanford and USC for his services.
UPDATE II (N): WR Paul Richardson and TE John Young have sent in their LOIs. GO BRUINS.
UPDATE III (R): Here is the list of guys who have faxed in their LOI's, officially making them Bruins. We'll update this throughout the day as more LOI's come in.

UPDATE IV(N): Hello Kiffin's star recruit is off to a classic Trojan start:
You can't make that up. GO BRUINS.
UPDATE (IV): Heimuli to Oregon. Big get for the Ducks. Let's move on to Owa (and now the Marsh signing looks even more important in retrospect). GO BRUINS.

Haven't been this stoked about NSD

I guess DiPoalo made it official then
Damn! Now I really want Owa.

SAs? Oh, STUDENT-athletes....
At $C, they probably just call them As or something.

Who do you guys think would be the bigger commit?
Heimuli or Owa? If you have to choose only one of them, who would it be?
Heimuli
DT is our biggest need. But we need to get talent at DE to be able to rush the passer which we had issues with this season.
Owa is an athletic game changing stud at DE
we need him.
by inhowlandwetrust on Feb 3, 2010 9:14 AM PST up reply actions
Owa would be amazing
However, in terms of necessity Heimuli is a crucial get … if we can get it done.
No jinxing, people, it's not even 9:30 yet!
"In this program your passion bucket must be full to play SC." -- CRN, to Dan Patrick, 1/2008
You're right
I’m not going to comment anymore until 9:30…
Personally, Heimuli due to need
We need 3 or so DTs to round out the rotation, and while Owa may be a better player, DT is a much bigger need than DE right now
But image is everything.
I think landing Owa makes a bigger splash on the national scene and continues to make UCLA a legit destination for blue chippers next year and the year after.

No worries, babe -- but has your little guy given us a verbal commitment yet?
Actually, I should probably ask — is he even VERBAL yet?

Not to say that they’re doing better than everyone else, but I wasn’t expecting this much from them. Oregon’s not looking so hot getting defensive players.

It will really work out for him when he gets to play under another Buddy Teevenesque coach in 2 years.
bad decision by Nottingham
He would have been a great fit for our offense…accurate decision maker. Oh well…we need a QB next year pretty bad (and WR).

If you are talking about Scout they have been up there for a while
by 84 on Feb 3, 2010 9:25 AM PST up reply actions
Interesting that Scout has been rating UW's class top ten for weeks
But Rivals doesn’t have them top 25. They did land Sean Parker today.
by 84 on Feb 3, 2010 9:27 AM PST up reply actions
Here is why ...
Scout uses total points and Washington has 31 commits
Rivals uses a different system that accounts for average rating of the commits.
SC is likely number one on Rivals because their star rankings are so high
A mix of star rating and size
USC is 4th by Rivals, while having by far the highest average star rating. Fla and Texas have ~ 10 more commits and a slightly lower star rating, and are #1 and 2.

They have been Scout top-10 for weeks
part of having 29 commits (up to 30-31 this morning, I think)

some UCLA

As long as we get the recruits we need
I hope UW and Cal have great signing days as well.
2 Reasons:
1. For the Pac-10 to get the respect we deserve, we need 3-4 strong teams at the top.
2. Every 4* or 5* recruit that UW or Cal gets is one less that U$C may have gotten.
Meh
I don’t really care much about rest of the Pac-10. I want everyone to go to UCLA. I doubt rest of the Pac-10 fanbases are “hoping” for UCLA to have a “great signing day.”
agree. Doubt suc cared about the pac 9 the last 7 years.

In addition to Hemuili, rivals is reporting that they grabbed one of Utah’s commits this morning.
formerly bruinhoo
Trying not to be sour grapes but...
Looking at his profile and our needs and his abilities, I’m not so sure that he could have helped immediately. Any DT in college benching 245 isn’t going to get much happening. I’m sure, later on down the line, he’ll make an impact, but immediately, not so sure.

Wonder why Pierson

"The entire world that bleeds blue and gold ... they have been dying for this." - Coach Rick Neuheisel
Rough
Not that I am still not very happy it is just that I was getting unrealistic expectations
possible they used Haloti Ngata
at some point as an example to the kid as a player from Utah goes to Oregon now hes a prowbowler
where'd that come from?
haloti ngata making phone calls?
Across The Face
no im saying
thers a comparison there maybe they tried to tell him he could be the next ngata at oregon…just something i thought off the top of my head really dont hold any weight to it, just a thought
maybe we can recruit him in 3 years
after his mission
that is true
We needed him and this hurts, no doubt.
But getting him for one year as a true freshman (and not the #1 rated DT ready to contribute right away) means that maybe this wasn’t the hardest loss. Good for Oregon, I guess.
It IS closing day
I just closed a deal that I was working on since June! All because CRN got me pumped! :)

just one question
where exactly is “Go” cuz I want to go past it about a billion times or so.
Not for lack of trying
15 applications, 8 interviews, 8 wait lists, 8 rejections.
But hey, what do I know. Iām just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
That's pretty standard for med school
At least it was in my day. Average was 30 applications per applicant, if I’m not mistaken, and people usually got even fewer interviews.
Now the wait lists? That was effed up!
But hey, what do I know. Iām just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
Makes the law school admit process seem much better
Not as much the # of apps, but we don’t have all those interviews…
formerly bruinhoo
I know
all my roommate had to do was send in his applications…I had to fly around the country on a student budget for interviews.
But hey, what do I know. Iām just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
Don't know if I could have pulled that off
It was (time and $$) enough for me to take one trip east to visit a couple of schools after being admitted, and that was with a Southwest rewards ticket (thanks to all the LAX-Oakland flying while at UCLA!) and crashing with students while I was in DC and at UVa.
formerly bruinhoo
Oh I crashed with friends/family all the time
Had to take crappy airlines (Tower Air, anyone?), and a couple of times, took a red eye, changed at the airport, and flew back the same day.
But hey, what do I know. Iām just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
yup
slept at airports, and slept and changed in a rental car a few times, stacked some interviews in the south 3 or 4 days in a row and drove btwn then, flew out of LAX at 1 am more than once.

It's amazing
how much money and time we had to spend doing that stuff, not to mention the applications themselves. Greg where did you end up going?
But hey, what do I know. Iām just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
Baylor, in Houston
I was a bit lucky during my interview season. I’d already graduated the year before and was working in a research lab at Cedars, so my time was a bit more flexible than if I were juggling classes and unemployed.

I should have taken a year off and worked. Then again, probably a blessing in disguise for me.

still is putting together a ridiculous class. How do the kids not see the writing on the wall. There is no way they should be signing the quality they are. Infuriating.
I don't see any writing on sc's wall.
If there were writing on sc’s wall it would have been there years ago.
They must know they are skatingby.
sjh
maybe the writing isn't there
because nobody over there knows how to write.
Just to make ourselves feel a little better about losing out on Heimuli
I posted this on another BN thread several days ago. It’s what he wrote on his facebook page:
"ess den a week away nd yet i still dnt kno wea i wna goā¦. holy cow diz iz gna be harder den i thoughtā¦. thnx to erywun nd all da skoolz has showed interest, it really meanz alot, nd i hope dat erywun knowz dat wea eva i go, itz strictly business, nofin personal⦠hopefully i make da rite choice⦠thnx agin erywun!!!"
A number of us grimaced at his take on the english language. Maybe he saw UCLA was a top-25 university and didn’t want any part of that? Just guessing
Let's not bad mouth this kid
I really wish we got him. This is the one that stings me a bit. Hope we get Owa.
Ok, fair enough
Good kid, unfortunate decision.
Another guy I wish the absolute best for…off the football field.
Don't forget
we could still get him back in 3 years. After his LDS mission
hahaha, yeah
This is still UCLA, players still need to fit in.
In fairness
I know a lot of extremely educated people who use shorthand to communicate via gchat, AIM, messenger, facebook, etc in a vaguely similar manner, so I wouldn’t say he’s a dummy just because of that alone
by bruinhopeful on Feb 3, 2010 10:17 AM PST up reply actions
I have a hard time taking someone seriously
if they can’t even use somewhat intelligible grammar. I don’t care how intelligent they seem to be…
Agreed.
I’ve seen a lot of web-speak, and use it from time to time. There’s shorthand, and there’s intentionally making up your own language. “thnx to erywun nd all da skoolz has showed interest” uses six less characters than “proper” English, yet would get him held back in first grade. At least, IMHO. :)
I don't think it's indicative of his intellect
It’s the BFF, LOL, LMFAO, generation. I cringe to think of what my kids will be writing in the future.
If he is from Hawaii,
he may be throwing in some of that pidgeon. That’s kind of what it looks like.
Our DT situation
Since Heimuli switched, I had to look at our depth at DT, and it’s scary thin. David Carter, Justin Edison and Andy Keane are the only ones listed as DT’s on our roster. We have 4 DT’s committed, but only 2 look ready to play next year based on size (Marsh and Epenesa). I wonder if we still go after Pennix. He’s listed as having an offer from us, but he hasn’t been mentioned much lately. Any word from him?
That's why Heimuli was such a big guy
I don’t want Epenesa to play this year. He really should redshirt, but we may be forced to use him.

Would a freshman
really make that much of an impact? He’s only playing for one year. I really don’t think it’s that big a deal.
Regardless, next year, we have to beat teams with our offense…
But hey, what do I know. Iām just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
Usually no
but for us at DT next year, they’ll have to. Heimuli was one of the more ready to play recruits in the country so he was going to be able to step in and play as a freshman and not only does he play, but he allows Epenesa to redshirt. If we can snag Owa though, we could slide an end to tackle.

Definitely
But for some reason, I’m not worried. I just don’t think that the running backs in the Pac-10 this year will be as good as last year…hopefully it’s not wishful thinking.
But hey, what do I know. Iām just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
+1
Really wanted Epenesa to RS. Talk of Chandler & Dovonan Carter being moved to DT. If Holmes gets bigger, he may be a candidate as well. Also, if the O would let go, Allmond would be another candidate. Hope things work itself out because DT is our biggest weakness.
I feel like we've mishandled him
Really needed to have picked a position and let him learn by now.

Agree to both of you guys
Chandler is athletic and has a bit of mean streak. That would work well at DT. Yup, the whole flip flop thing really didn’t do the kid any favors. I love him for it though. Total team player.
Yup
Nothing at all against Chandler. He’s done whatever coaches have asked of him.

Who would slide over to tackle?
Rye, who do you think could make the move over to DT from DE? From the looks of it, our DE’s are also very thin and lack the size to play true DT.

Overall we are getting a lot of talent
but DT is still a big worry.
Marsh is our big-time guy. Epenesa is supposed to be a good one eventually, but is pretty raw right now and will take time. Wesley Flowers is apparently just a guy.
That is not too much immediate or even long-term impact on a position we have no depth at.
I was also
looking at DT depth heading into next season. definitely area of concern. looks like youngsters will be playing right away.
well
we’ve done EVERYTHING possible at this position in the offseason. We have 5 commits… crazy.
It may end up like Sheldon Price
There’s going to be growing pains at the DT position, but hopefully it can be offset by strong DE and LB play. We’ll see…
I don't havea ton of confidence in our LBs
which makes our lack of DTs more of a concern for me.

Perfect speed rusher
He can still gain weight and maintain his speed. I keep on seeing Hughes (TCU DE) when I see Graham. TCU is famous for bringing in athletes and finding a spot for them. Hughes was a RB in HS I believe. Graham is an athlete and with his speed, I think he’ll cause headaches for QB’s.
Proud of Zumwalt
HB Edison was my high school. And his coach was a Beaver. Thanks to Crissman for the assist?
question
if we do not get Owa, where would you rank recruiting this year?
I expect top 20
Would be happy with top 15.
Would be ecstatic with top 10.
Would run outside naked with top 5.
But hey, what do I know. Iām just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
I quit my job
and go work for CRN for free.
:-O
But hey, what do I know. Iām just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
So
if we’re only Top 5 next year, you’re going to be running around Morgan Center naked? Watch out for those tasers. :D
Top 5 at what?
Recruiting or ranking? I need to know.
But hey, what do I know. Iām just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
N ---
I think people are forgetting that we’re coming off a 7-6 season that featured a five game losing streak. But for the most part, our class is right up there with the best programs in the country.
Our class is going to be far and away better ranked than our season. Considering our record the past two years (don’t forget everyone, these kids started looking at schools when we had just 4 wins) — this class is outstanding.
Coupled with last year’s class — we will be dangerous a year or two down the line.
Exactly
we need a good season this year, some good wins, no losing streaks, a good bowl game, and very importantly, we have to beat U$C*. Have to.
But hey, what do I know. Iām just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
I agree and I'm sticking with my prediction ...
we are going to be a very good team in conference next year. We might struggle against Texas in non conference — who wouldn’t — but we will be very, very tough in conference next year.
Definitely
If we can somehow manage 2-1 in non-conference and a win over Stanford, we’ll go flying into conference play. Could be a really fun year. As long as we’re 2-2 with a win over Stanford though, we’ll be in good position to get the top four conference finish we’re hoping for.
For everything UCLA baseball, visit my UCLA baseball twitter.
by Ryan Rosenblatt on Feb 3, 2010 10:45 AM PST up reply actions
When you look at the teams ...
with better recruiting classes, they are for the most part top ten top fifteen teams — except maybe Wash and Mich. We’re recruiting with the big boys even though we really are coming off a lousy season. 6-6 plus a win over Temple is not a great year.
Neu is working miracles — imagine what he’d do if we won 9 or 10 games and beat an SC or Oregon?
Good take and perspective
2011 will be the year when our BRUINS ROAR! The talent will have fully matured by then and our depth will be much better throughout the entire roster.
We have a good class regardless
but without Owa, I’m not overly excited. Coming up a player short at DL, when that’s our biggest need, doesn’t lead me to celebrate.

This year makes 2 in a row for me where I have been excited about NSD. Good job CRN and Co. and thanks.
