[Update x4] Coffee Is For Closers: Dietrich Riley Serves Up The Exclamation Point On UCLA's Amazing Signing Day

Well it's official. Rick Neuheisel has topped last year's signing day with another blockbuster recruiting class. Here was the exclamation point from a ridiculous, surreal, amazing afternoon for the Bruin Nation:

Dietrichriley_medium
Screenshot: Telemachus

He is of course Dietrich Riley, the 4 star safety from Southern California who was a former Trojan commit, who punctuated an incredible day for Rick Neuheisel and UCLA Bruins. For all the talk of CRN just caring about offensive skill positions he has just brought into UCLA one of the most defensive minded athletic class in recent history.

Star-divide

Of course we will have lot more perspective on this. For now watching this video is all we need:

ALWAYS BE CLOSING. COFFEE IS FOR CLOSERS.

Congratulations to Coach Neuheisel, his staff and the entire program for an amazing signing day.

GO BRUINS.

UPDATE (N): Here is the updated here as more LOIs come in. We will leave the chart of signees at the end of the post and update as applicable. What a day. GO BRUINS.

UPDATE II (N): Gold has some very interesting info. on Shirley's flip:

I'm hearing from good sources that as soon as UCLA found out that Hayes Pullard was heading to USC, they put the full-court press on Josh Shirley. I'm told they basically sold Shirley on that spot.

I think that kind of anecdote only confirms the tenacity with which CRN is leading this program. It is already producing unimaginable results on the recruiting trail. His team is making progress in the W-L column. If he keeps improving on this season's record (especially get us a winning record in the Pac-10 next year), UCLA will be in position to do something special both on future signing days and late in the bowl season. That tenacity and competitive spirit will pay off. GO BRUINS.

UPDATE III (N): CRN in a celebratory mood:

What a terrific group of student-athletes, I'm proud to welcome these fantastic young men to our Bruin family. Its a great day to be a Bruin!

Indeed coach. GO BRUINS.

UPDATE IV (N): Riley and Shirley's LOIs are in per UCLA athletics. Official LOI number is at 22. GO BRUINS.

Yet Gold promises one more...

anyone have any idea who it could be? (Other than Henderson, which i seriously doubt)

Has there ever been a player better than Detlef Schrempf?

Gold said it was Pullard

He was wrong on that one.
I know his recent post was confusing, but he clarified in the chat.

I think we are done. But what a finish!!

Scouts rating is before Riley too

Although Im not sure how much more we could move. MAYBE 6, but probably stay at 7.

FANTASTIC for a 7-6 team, 1 year removed from 4-8.

A lot of people really think it will be USC

But then, they’ve already been wrong several times today.

Kiffin just upped his bribe multiple times, his only shot to save the day. I hear he is offering the Henderson family a new house (Probably Cheatey Peteys house)

Passion Bucket

Conquest Chronicles has 209 comments in their NSD thread…we’ve blown through about 4-5 threads, or something like that. Who has the bigger passion bucket? WHAT AN INCREDIBLE DAY. Our defense is going to be sick in 2-3 years.

Rivals Radio

The hot topic on Rivals Radio (XMSN on XM Radio) is Rick Neuheisel and what he has accomplished here. The analyst they got on the phone is claiming that CRN is the the single best recruiter in the country, hands down. Better than Meyer and the rest of the bunch.

by Bruins913 on Feb 3, 2010 2:11 PM PST reply actions

So...........

I know we have a tough schedule next year, and many of us were hoping for an 8 win season. My question to the BN community is how dos the great recruiting news of today affect those expectations?

I would still be happy with an 8 win season next year, and since freshman don’t exactly have a big impact in football, I’m not sure how much impact any of these guys will have (although Owa looks like an immediate starter). I do really really really want a beat down of SC though.

by bruinponcho on Feb 3, 2010 2:11 PM PST reply actions

I think 8 wins is reasonable

But some are expecting 7 again due to the schedule. This past year we beat the teams we should have, and lost to the teams we should have. I think we should be able to steal two from Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, Arizona, or $C, while losing to one non conference opponent (most likely Texa$). That makes for an 8 win season.

by gbruin on Feb 3, 2010 2:36 PM PST up reply actions

not bad, very good for us actually, the star of the class is running back Darryl Fields

the class is definitely an upgrade, and we’re starting to compete with the lower level bcs conference teams which is a good sign. I think next years class will be the biggest upgrade by far, as many of this year’s guys were obviously recruited and locked down before our big statement win over nevada in the hawaii bowl. If our stock continues to rise, the talent level should be really good next year.

thanks, and ya that is extrodinarily frustrating to say the least, $C certainly qualifies for the DP in my opinion.

But I’m really happy to be here as we are finally building the program back up the right way. June Jones is an incredibly wise and talented coach, and hes making the alumni and the fan base believe again. I’d watch out for Kyle Padron our true sophmore quarterback, the nevada game was the first time June allowed him to run the run and shoot with a 5 wide set, and it was absolutely explosive.

I absolutely cannot wait for football, between making the trip down to Austin to see the Bruins and an exciting year ahead for the mustangs, it should be great haha.

That’s why the ESPNU panel reacted by “reading between the lines.” Very clearly, Kiffin doesn’t have a gracious bone in his entire being, not even a disingenuous one. Can't Wait till Opening Game! ...............

My wife is a K-State Alum and since we beat them in September, all I’ve heard is the smack about how they are going to avenge their loss. She thinks Bill Snyder walks on water and is the second coming of Jesus himself.
Well I got to tell you, Snyder is the false Messiah! The real Messiah? CNC! He’s the Messiah and Moses all rolled into one. He has led us to the Promised Land, the Land of Milk and Honey.
Now it’s up to Rick, Chuck and Norm to make football players out of these guys. As we have learned in BB, just because a guy is a 5* or 4* playe doesn’t mean he can play the game. Now the work begins!
No offense to KP,RB and the other QB but when are we going to start recruiting stud QB’s? Haven’t had one since Cade.

by Twothphry on Feb 3, 2010 3:25 PM PST up reply actions

I'm surprised

not that the Bruins did well today, in fact phenomenal based on their just concluded underachieving season, but CRN knows how to recruit and really did a top notch job for the second year in a row. What is surprising is all those young kids being taken in by Kiffen and Orgeron. If the Trogans really do face some serious sanctions for their football program, which I fully think they will, there are going to be a lot of pissed off 5 and 4 star HS recruits. In addition, the word will go out not to trust these two clowns from that cesspool in dowtown LA. Makes you wonder what was told to these players?

by BigB88 on Feb 3, 2010 3:29 PM PST reply actions

UCLA didn't "underachieve" last season

That’s just not true and we have had extensive discussions laying out how our season this past year met and exceeded pre-reason expectations. Looks up all of our posts discussing expectations on 2009 season. If you are going to offer takes on BN, we’d appreciate you are aware of the previous discussions in the community. THanks.

by Nestor on Feb 3, 2010 3:37 PM PST up reply actions

This is

my opinion, I’m not rehashing previous discussions on BN. UCLA should have beaten Oregon, Oregon St and the Trogans. The fact that they didn’t in MY view makes it an unacieving season and I’m sure the players and coaching staff would agree with this assessment. Get your facts straight, expectations on what is wished are different from actual results.

by BigB88 on Feb 3, 2010 3:43 PM PST up reply actions

Great ... that is your opinion

However, it is baseless as shown in exhaustive discussions here on BN. We don’t like it when people come in here and bring up rehashed discussions which has been beaten to death. If you can’t handle that then don’t post here. Read up our rules and what we look for in comments and posts before participating. Otherwise, this is not your playground. Then come back and write at least 1000 words with verifiable sources and then you can tell Nestor he is wrong. In other words tell us exactly why YOUR view is the valid one. All Nestor really said was that your opinion seems baseless.

Rankings

Can somebody explain to me HOW USC is 8th in recruiting on scout.com and 2nd on rivals.com

by JVSTYLN on Feb 3, 2010 3:30 PM PST reply actions

As with ANY ranking

Check the criteria. Some are based more on quantity, while others are more based on the average star rating for each recruit regardless of how big the class is.

Differences in criteria explain why UCLA is just one place above USC in the much discredited U.S. News ranking of national universities (which consider a lot of non-academic criteria), but more than 70 places ahead in U.S. News’ ranking of world universities. Two very different results from the exact same publisher.

It's been mentioned before, but

Rivals uses a rather myopic ranking system where it pretty much just adds up the total amount of stars in the class and ranks by that. Scout takes into account talent, need and balance.

Also, Scout explains their system, but Rivals (to my knowledge) does not. This gives me more faith in Scout’s rankings.

LOIs

I see that we have 22 LOIs (unless I’m counting wrong)

Anybody know what’s up with:
Rykeem Yates?
Julious Moore?
Marquis Jackson?

If I remember correctly, Moore is having issues with academics. What about the other two though? I thought Jackson said that he solidified his commitment.

Somebody please explain.

by longbordr52 on Feb 3, 2010 3:37 PM PST reply actions

I think Yates my greyshirt, though I would think he still would have faxed the LOI today.

Jackson doesn’t sign one as a JUCO commit.

Moore is having academic issues. I wish him the best, but general feeling is that he will not make grades to get in.

by BruinGold82 on Feb 3, 2010 3:45 PM PST up reply actions

ahh, that's right

I forgot that JUCOs don’t fax LOIs. Thank you for reminding me.

Still would like to see Yates on there, though.

Off topic but did anyone notice Miami's class

it seems like years they underachieve they bring in a top 5 class but this year they finally show potential and fall flat in recruiting

juco transfers dont sign LOI's

that’s the deal with jackson.

i agree with you amm19, miami couldnt close this year. helped sc because they snagged thomas and henderson. and helped us cuz we got shirley.

btw, any truth to the rumor that shirley and pullard dont like each other?

if you're talking about Jackson

that’s unfortunate that it would take so long. Not having Spring practice may limit his immediate contributions next year.

Antwaun Woods, '11, commits to suc today

http://www.insidesocal.com/prepsports/2010/02/hs-football-taft-junior-woods.html

Talk about an early committment. Well, it’ll be that much sweeter when CRN flip him over to Westwood!!!

meh

If we’ve learned ANYTHING today, it’s that recruiting a kid is never over until the ink is on the paper.

Taft

is all suc for now. Steve Smith, Jamere Holland, Morgan, etc. Not surprised by this at all but we’ll see what happens.

Video on Dietrich Riley?

Anyone have a link to his signing announcement?

Don't Forget About the Transfers

Just think that the Bruins’ Top 10 recruiting class does not include three outstanding transfers: Josh Smith, Joseph Fauria and Marquis Jackson.

Joseph Fauria was a four-star recruit in 2008 and ranked the 11th tight end in the nation by Scouts.com. Jackson is a four-star recruit as well.

The depth CRN and the staff is building in the program is amazing. I can’t wait until the spring.

Owa

Did anyone notice the following on Scout.com today:
“The factor that came down to these final three, was where I felt the most comfortable at, and where I see myself excelling the next 4-5 years, and the academics,” said Odighizuwa.

This guy is focused on the right thing. If he is good as his stars and STAYS for his entire career it could be amazing.
