Maybe this kid is more on the ball than we think?

Update (P). From the linked NYT report: "According to Henderson’s father, Sean, he will wait until U.S.C. appears before an N.C.A.A. infractions committee from Feb. 19-21 to hear about possible sanctions for the program before deciding whether to sign the letter."

Waiting for the enforcement hearing to make a final commitment

Wants to hear what comes out in the hearing, get an idea what possible sanctions they are facing… Good move on his part, at least in terms of someone that would actually consider sc at this point.

I think it goes to show

That they don’t exactly know what is going to happen with the NCAA. I think they couldn’t possibly know. Lame is feeding these kids a line of BS.

The smart thing to do for an SC commit this year

The flip side from a recruit’s perspective would be that for most of them, they are replaceable. Unless the elite recruits made a concerted decision not to send LOI’s in to SC until after the hearing, $c could simply recruit other players of similar quality that would sign. Henderson is one of the few players good enough where that is not a consideration; either $c waits, or other top programs will be sure to find him a scholy.

Interesting

Scout shows Henderson as having already sent in his LOI, though we have word from his father that no letter has been delivered to SC. Guess the recruiting folks do jump the gun, after all.

It was my understanding that the Feb 19-21 date is just the meeting then..

the NCAA will take up to 6 weeks to announce a decision on any sanctions. If this is true then the NCAA decision could technically be after the 4-1-10 deadline for LOI.

by 84 on Feb 3, 2010 9:07 PM PST reply actions

Sounded

like the family felt they could glean enough information from the tone of the meeting to get an idea of what could happen.

by BruinFanGA on Feb 3, 2010 9:09 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

Yeah

I didn’t excerpt the entire piece from the Times, but it goes on to quote the father as saying that he (and the family) knows that a final decision and resulting sanctions will not come down at the hearing, but that it will give them a sense of what is to happen.

i could be mistaken

but thats also the deadline for ALL high school students to accept a college admittance. I imagine it become more than just a sports thing if he misses the deadline.

by bk bruin on Feb 4, 2010 8:31 AM PST up reply actions

The usual deadline is 5/1

Most of the Ivies don’t even release decisions until 4/1, and some public schools have their application deadline in early May. Also, waitlisted applicants often don’t get notified of an acceptance well into June.

The NCAA is unbelievable

They really couldn’t call an emergency meeting earlier to deal with this issue in a timely fashion that won’t allow the swindling of 20 kids? Do they really care about the athletes that little?

by bluebland on Feb 3, 2010 9:12 PM PST reply actions

Due process

The timing may suck, but there is procedure that must be followed. The timing was set once the NCAA investigators completed their investigation and submitted their findings to the enforcement committee. At that point, they had to put together a preliminary report, give that to SC and give them 3 months to file a response, and then schedule a hearing.

If Reggie Bush loses the Heisman,

It will be the biggest story in the Sports World for quite some time.

Therefore, I expect BSPN & the Trogan Times to minimize it, criticize it, and generally ignore that it ever happened.

Kids dont have to sign a LOI…you don’t need a letter of intent for a scholarship or to attend a school. The only benefits are that the school will know that he’s coming and reserve a scholarship which they are bound to provide for a year (provided that he gains admission) and that other schools can no longer recruit him. IMO the letter of intent protects the school more than the student-athlete. I don’t think SC is going to use his scholarship on someone else, so he doesn’t really have anything to lose by not signing – if he does sign however then he is bound to SC for a year despite what happens with the NCAA, unless SC chooses to release him. Good call.

by jtthirtyfour on Feb 3, 2010 9:55 PM PST reply actions

If they lose scholarships due to NCAA sanctions,

couldn’t they potentially be unable to offer to unsigned recruits? Hoping someone knows how that works.

by sam_in_hb on Feb 3, 2010 9:58 PM PST up reply actions

They'd have to make room

but there’s also a rule that if a program is put on probation for the duration of a player’s career, he can transfer without sitting out. That means one year of probation any senior can transfer no problem, two years and juniors can, etc. If they go on probation, enough spots would be open for their recruits due to transfers.

by Ryan Rosenblatt on Feb 3, 2010 10:02 PM PST up reply actions

Question - Is just$c* on probation now, or have they recently come off?

I remember reading that somewhere, and that would make a difference re penalties.

Also, “probation” suggests that they’re sort of released on good behavior. If that’s so, when they show more of the same behavior, shouldn’t that mean an automatic revocation of their probation and they go back in the slammer? Or the ncaa equivalent?

by Fox 71 on Feb 3, 2010 10:06 PM PST up reply actions

They were on probation from August 2001-03

and subject to repeat offender status through August 2006, meaning that if they committed a major violation (when the violation occurs, not when it is found out) between 8/2001-06, they will be subject to enhanced penalties for the new infraction.

When will the NCAA finaly act

Is there any info on the possible sanctions. In the age of rapid info how does nobody know what might happen. Does the NCAA feel if they drag there feet long enough everyone will forget. I mean there in a tight spot here everyone knows there a joke but they don’t want to put the hammer down on suc and at the same time if they do nothing the flood gates for this will kind of behavior will be open. I guess we can only wait and hope that karma and justice will be served them and the a hole grin frozen on suc fan will be wiped off if only for a second.

by uclamike on Feb 3, 2010 10:43 PM PST via mobile reply actions

We won't have much info on (possible) sanctions until we have an idea of the NCAA's findings

Once the particular findings – what NCAA rules have been violated, as well as the circumstances surrounding any violations – have come out, we can come up with some idea of sanctions by looking back at past NCAA enforcement actions. Such precedent should not be binding, as it would be in a court, but I would not expect much deviation from past NCAA action.

More from the NY TImes

On Henderson, USC and possible sanctions:

But while visiting the Hendersons last week in Minneapolis, Lane Kiffin told them not to be worried, Sean Henderson said.
"As far as he’s been informed — he was very, very choosy with his words — there shouldn’t be anything going wrong because there was no knowledge of anything going on by the staff," Sean Henderson said. The Hendersons asked Kiffin to be clear about what impact the N.C.A.A. might have on the Trojans’ football program, Sean Henderson said. Just before Seantrel chose U.S.C. on Wednesday, Kiffin reiterated not to listen to others who said the Trojans might face sanctions.

Going to be an interesting few weeks in the CFB world, wrt the NCAA enforcement committee and whether they have any guts at all.

this depresses me

makes it sound like all the staff have held the line on “see no evil”, and that without any evidence of complicity by staff the sanctions will be severely limited.

However, I’m glad this kid is showing enough skepticism about Lame not to buy his assurances.

by britishbruin on Feb 4, 2010 6:06 AM PST up reply actions

my question is why wait.

If you feel uneasy enough to hold off signing a LOI, that should be all the indication you need. Go somewhere else.

he might have a bad year regardless of whether or not hes the best OL. I imagine Lame would discipline him by benching to payback for the lack of trust in the program and in his word about sanctions.

I love this

Heightened attention gonna be added to USC’s bad behavior as they wait for the #1 recruit to make his choice.

by bruinmike on Feb 3, 2010 11:13 PM PST reply actions

anybody else get the feeling

that the NCAA will fail in punishing U$C for all their past transgressions, simply slapping them on the wrist…

But after a few years of Lamey openly cheating, they will reevaluate all the new violations and come down incredibly hard on what is obviously a ‘repeat offender’. I just can’t envision the NCAA having any balls the first time around, but they will on the second try.

(I’m a pessimist, but I just can’t see anything significant really happening this time around.)

by longbordr52 on Feb 3, 2010 11:47 PM PST reply actions

But wait

Dillon Baxter was told by Kiffin that “they would take a couple of losses away” and that’s it! So there’s nothing to worry about Seantrel!

That's right

$c*’s record will actually improve. They will get the entire championship that they “shared” with LSU. Probably erase 13-9 also.

And, of course, ESPN and others tout $C as having the #1 recruiting class...

… without mentioning that tiny little point about Henderson holding off on his LOI.

Typical.

Im confused

I keep seeing people writing about $c’s top class and the only place I see that is Rivals. ESPN and others have them 7th. Is ESPN now saying they have the #1 class? Im not sure how ANYONE could rival Florida class but who knows with these “reporters”.

ESPN = same folks that spend multi-billion $$'s on the BCS

and then pimped $C as prospective 3-time champions the year after they failed to advance to the BCS championship game, disrespecting national champion LSU in the process (thankfully 13-9 shut up that talk).

Did you guys read the full NYT report on this kid?

He made the Miami coach wait extra hour and half while he was getting his “hair done.” He called Jim Tressel “boring.” Miami sent out a limo (which is a possible NCAA violation) to take him and his Dad to the airport. This story sounds like a total mess.

by Nestor on Feb 4, 2010 9:10 AM PST reply actions

Saw that article, too.

This guy is a prima donna. Nothing but trouble, here, as far as I am concerned. I believe he is planning his NFL career, already.

Let him end up wherever he does, so long as it is not Westwood. This guy seems like he has big time potential to be a locker room cancer.

I would take 20 Patrick Cowans or Kevin Crafts over uber tackle every day of the week. With those kind of guys, there will never be a question of effort or leadership. Thankfully, we racked up a class with extremely talented student athletes who appear ready to fully commit to school and the program.
