Question re. Pauley Renovation/b-ball TV Coverage
Over the last few weeks we've talked a lot about the excitment surrounding our football program and the trepidation and concerns surrounding our b-ball program and how those general moods/auras may effect recruiting. Something that's always bugged me in terms of creating a sense of energy and excitement surrounding our b-ball squad is the fact that the TV cameras in Pauley face the alumni section as opposed to the student section.
I may be overestimating the value of an enthusiastic fan base but I can't help but think that recruits (and youngsters that may turn into recruits one day) might be more likely to gravitate toward a place where there is a visible, tangible sense of excitement in the stands. Call me a heratic, but if I had been a stud ballplayer when I was in high school, I have to think that the lure of playing in front of the Cameron Crazies would have been pretty strong.
Check out this video for a side-by-side comparison of the kids over at Dook and the geriatric crowd that sits across from the kids over at Pauley.
So my question, at long last, has anyone seen or heard anything regarding a rearranging of the cameras or altered placement of the student section post-renovation? I'm not asking that students surround the court the way they do at many schools but at least point a camera at 'em.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

My understanding
Is that currently Pauley is configured in a way so that the TV cameras can only be placed facing those lifeless alums (who have no idea when to stand up or how to get excited about a game). Your question is something I have wondered for years after watching the alumni section in utter frustration and that’s the answer I have gotten.
I REALLY REALLY wish the camera faced our Den/student section. For the isolated instances of criticism leveled at those kids, I do think we have one of the best student sections in the country.
Students Need to Be on the Floor
I have long advocated that students should have priority seating in all rows and sections surrounding the floor. The new Pauley configuration may help, but admin should reevaluate alums having floor level seats. I am a 1971 grad who enjoyed four national championships while at UCLA, so I’m one of those guys that is no longer interested in providing the courtside enthusiasm that I once did when I stood in line outside Pauley to rush to the best seat I could get near the court. I know that the seat licenses paid by long time season ticket holders are financially important to the program, but there should still be an adjustment of priority seat allocation.
most of the seat license paid by long time ticket holders
are way under market value and grandfathered in.

TV coverage
Excellent point. The TV cameras need a direct view of the Den.
As mentioned several times on the Stanford game thread, the perspective from Pauley was much more positive than from those who watched on TV. I hope that’s corrected in the remodel.

Looks like the media set up will stay the same
It is my understanding, that like many other things, the media set up will not change during the renovation. The plans that I’ve seen call for the benches to be moved to what is now the student side (tunnels from the new subterranean locker rooms will end there), however; the plans also indicate that the students and alumni will switch sides, as will the media.
In short, the media section will still face the benches and the alumni will be on the bench-side. There will also be a small media section behind a basket, so it’s possible that more cameras could be placed around Pauley. The reality is that our TV views are likely to remain unchanged.
The good news is that students are given more seating close to the court (one full lower-level side and the complete lower-level behind one basket). The bad new is that it still isn’t enough to make it intimidating. Giving more seats to students is a tough sell for an administration and an era so focused on $$$. It’s the right thing to do, but it leaves a lot of $$$ on the table. Unfortunately that’s what the renovation and current NCAA athletics are about — $$$.
As an alumni in those seats, I wish more could be given to students. I greatly appreciate the opportunity to sit where I do and do my best to cheer on the Bruins and heckle the other team (behind the opponent bench) every game. Wish more were like the few people I sit around. The reality is that the renovation and donation schedule will attract more sedate fans who have the tickets as a business write-offs (and no real interest and knowledge) or older fans who have the means ($$$) but no longer have the fire. Hope I’m wrong.
Sorry for the tome of a post. It’s a topic near to me & has rankled me for some time.
Judging by how it looks on tv
Pauley every game looks like senior citizen day

Wonder how the demographics will change ...
when the senior citizen will no longer being paying a quarter of what the young guy sitting 20 rows behind him is paying.

The official Campaign of Champions site
shows the Den still basically underneath the cameras, with TV viewers getting to see the alumni in the background as they watch.
http://www.campaignofchampions.com/images/pdf/COC_SeatingGuide.pdf (page 10 of 18)
How hard would it be for the two sides to simply trade places? Anyone in a seat facing directly toward the court, not diagonally, simply has their seating plan turn 180 degrees around the point at center court. If you were mid-court, 5th row, you end up mid-court, 5th row. If you were 16th row, straight in line with a basket with the court to your left, you end up 16th row, straight in line with a basket with the court to your left. Alumni end up on the side where the cameras are located, and the students end up on the side people will see on TV. No seats would have their visibility or view decrease – in fact, with the centering of the court, many are going to be improving anyway.
No alumni have their view impacted, and TV audiences get to see people in the stands that have a pulse. It’s too logical to happen, of course.
A petition needs to be made
much like the one we signed for the letter asking for CTS to be fired. We can add audio-visual evidence for this one.
But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
Not a fair comparison
Cameron is an anomaly due to it’s size (really tiny in person) and age.
Name another college basketball arena where the camera doesn’t shoot towards the benches? There might be one or two, but I can’t think of any, and it certainly isn’t the norm. Plus, the AD would have to choose between giving up lucrative courtside seats or the even more lucrative courtside video message (ad) board.
Unless UCLA is going to put the students right behind the benches (Pac-10 would might have a problem with this), I don’t see it happening. But once again, Duke is the odd duck here – most schools don’t do this.
Not sure about specific Pac-10 rules
but other schools put students behind the benches (seemingly) without issue. That would not have an effect on the number of courtside seats available for alums or courtside ads – for example, the courtside seats currently in front of the Den would instead be the first row (or two) of the alum section.

The Dawg Pack
I know the cameras face the student section at the Univ of Washington. I’m not positive, but I’m fairly certain that the benches are also on that side.
At Kansas State, the cameras point towards the students, and the benches are on the near side.
And then there’s the crazy setup at Vandy, where the cameras point at the students, and the benches are along the baselines!

Just watched Michigan State and Purdue
and it looked like even though the first few rows looked like alumni or season ticket holders, you could still see the students right above them.
That Vandy stadium is crazy, it seems like the seats are 30 feet away from the baseline on each side!
But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
at least there's students under a basket...
slight improvement, but certainly nowhere near the impact of cameras facing the students…

I've always wondered about that
Totally infuriating. Nothing will happen, though. Our athletics administration doesn’t think the way fans do, which is unfortunate.
That's pretty much what I was thinking
I got that much more depressed after looking at a photo of Michigan State’s Breslin Center during a game. The ring of white (students) surrounding the court is an awesome sight.
That is sadly one of the reasons I can't watch CBB
almost every home team has an environment that completely trumps ours : (
