Center Court: UCLA Basketball (v. Arizona) Open Thread
UCLA Bruins at Arizona Wildcats, Mar 11, 2010 12:10 PM PST
Here we go. Not much else to say at this point. Ben Howland's Bruins (13-17, 8-10) star a "new season" this afternoon when they face No. 4 Arizona (16-14, 10-8) in the quarterfinals of the 2010 Pacific Life Pac-10 Tournament. The game will be televised live on FSN and is scheduled for a 12:10 p.m. (PT) tip-off.
UCLA's only chance of getting into the Big Dance is winning the Pac-10 tournament. Well we have never won it as the 5 seed. We won it in 2008, 2006 and in 1987, all three times as the No. 1 seed. Bruins are 2-1 all-time against Arizona in the Pac-10 Tournament, winning the last meeting 71-59 over the Wildcats in the semifinals on Mar. 10, 2006. That was a different time when UCLA basketball was actually about "defense," effort, hustle and tenacity for entire 40 minutes.
You can read up on all of our musings leading up to this game here. If you want to follow the game online you can do so via our official site. Don McLean is going to be in the broadcasting booth so that should be fun. As always, we will be here in the game threads with our rapid fire takes and commentary. So let's get this game thread started. Fire away.
GO BRUINS.

"The New Season"
I can’t say no. I can’t stay away. I can’t look ahead to next year (yet).
Go Bruins!!!! Man, I want them to kill the standard today.

I feel like once our season finally ends
which will likely happen today, a lot of negative things will occur in rapid succession surrounding our program. Transfers, coach bashing, Dragovic being granted another year of eligibility…
I’m bracing for a rough next week or 2 of basketball news.
Is it possible to feel these 2 things at once"
Can’t. Look. Away….

It's about time
I feel about this season as I did about the year 2009 (economy-wise) on Dec. 31: The only good thing that happened was that it ended. We’re just 2 1/2 hours away from putting this horrific season in our rear view mirror. What a relief.
I mostly checked out on the season halfway through the pac-10 schedule. I’m vacillating on whether or not I should call my wife to record this one. Maybe if it’s close at halftime I’ll insulate myself and watch it tonight…
just a reminder that we're actually favored by 1

We are favorite? That is a mild surprise. AZ closed the season with 3 wins including one against us while we did the opposite. Hope they are right. (I think we will win today but still. . .)

Man enough to admit
I was wrong on Nelson. He has limits and he obviously struggles on defense, but he is not, as I suggested back in December, a WCC or Big Sky player. He is not a top banana, or a second banana or even perhpas a fourth banana on a good team, but he is a banana. I don’t like the guy but he has good hands and he has a couple of post moves.

what's funny
is that he has a couple of assists, so he can legitimately fake a pass and get someone to bite
Yeah that was a great fake by RN
he had four AZ defenders around him, faked throwing the ball out (they all bought it) and turned to the hoop. Bueatiful play set up by a few passes by RN.
JA and ND are hustling and playing okay
But RN and MR are leading us. Should be up more.
Of course ND still chucked a bad three and JA almost fumbled the ball.
Lost in the hoopla of MR getting Pac 10 honors,
not one Bruin made it on the All Defensive team. Not surprising, given the way the season went, but disappointing. Always thought that we would have at least one player selected for that award
part of that is playing zone
at least, so they were saying this morning about why Syracuse has good defense but no-one honored for defensive play

Remember he is the cramp king. We need him in the second half and need him in the tourney in the next games. (Assuming we win today, which is looking more doubtful.)

He has the most fragile psyche I have ever seen for a player on this level
I still remember a road game early in the season where he shot an air-ball. The usual Chant goes up from the crowd, but he was really fazed by it. You could totally tell from his body language. He was never the same after that
I remember seeing him in high school
And he looked like a totally different player. Obviously, has bad work habits, but I hope he can gain all of that athleticism back.

It would have helped if Moser would have been used for 5-8 mins in this game for Tyler. That requires radical thinking apparently as Howland is coaching us out of another game.

This is how the fans of Saints, Rams, and Falcons and all other NFC teams must have felt like. Just a matter of time.

because he is young and stupid?
That is my guess.

why is that not intentional? Didn't go for ball
I’m still pissed about theintentional called on us
And, RN makes 2
sjh
Guess ND can't claim he never misses
free throws with under a minute left anymore.
Wow, we win
ND plays decent defense and we get a lot of fastbreak points. So next game only 3s
That is the most impressive part of our stretch run.

Yep, I thought it was all over when he went out.
They played like they wanted it today. Good effort.

“We are playing to get MR a NCAA Tourney birth”.
Ahh, would have been nice to play D this well and run this well for a winning record.
Telling
They’re not playing to get Dragovic a tourney berth?
How nice to see a Thursday game and not have to go to bed exhausted because of the time difference
Now I get to go see Jen’s Winter Guard concert. Life is so good.
sjh
got a little chuckle
in the post game interview RN kept saying, were playing to get Mike Roll in the tourny. No mention of getting Dragovic in, thought it was funny
What's your point?
He didnt mention Mustafa, Soo, Keefe, the trainer, and the manager that are graduating

also
it was in the context of Mike Roll being RN’s “mentor”

oh and he shot 8 of 9 from the field, would've had 20+ points if he shot from the line better

I have to say
for all the grief I’ve given Drago this season, he definitely helped the team win today instead of hurting it. That being said, I expect the next game to have more bricks and less defense now that he’s built up some confidence.
3-12 shooting but I agree, one of his best games
if he just would not shoot so much from outside.
He played well inside in spurts.
sjh
more bricks? oh boy...
he was 3-12 from the field and 2-8 from beyond the rainbow arc. put up numbers on the foul line

good and bad
good – taking more of a driving role against their players in foul trouble once TH went out; also, made FTs
bad – very poor decisions to launch (and miss) 3s with 15-20 left on the shot clock down the stretch

Love the New Season!
Great effort paid dividends today. Hope we see it again tomorrow. See you all then.
Oh, and I even got the kids on time.
