Center Court: UCLA Basketball (v. California) Open Thread

UCLA Bruins at California Golden Bears, Mar 12, 2010 6:18 PM PST

So is this it? Is this the last time this season we get to scream our heads off watching Rag and Jerime and wondering why we are all doing this (watching UCLA basketball) to ourselves? We are going to find out the answer in about half an hour when Bruins (14-17, 8-10) tip off against Pac-10 champions California Bears (22-9, 13-5). Reeves Nelson made his presence felt after returning to the Bruin lineup yesterday afternoon. Should be interesting to see whether he can keep it going for another night. Tip off is scheduled for 6:18 pm PST.

For the Bears they are playing perhaps for 5 or 6 seed at this point. I am guessing they are also going to try to make a statement that the win we had against them at Haas was nothing short of a fluke. If they can stay on their late season roll, they just might be able to get a 5 seed and score themselves first round games out West. As for the Bruins, they are looking for a miracle run in a "new season." Most of are realistic enough to know that it is not going to happen as we can't expect this team with characters like Rag and Jerime putting two decent games in a row.

You can read up on all of our musings leading up to this game here. If you want to follow the game online you can do so via our official site. As always, we will be here in the game threads with our rapid fire takes and commentary. So let's get this game thread started. Fire away.

GO BRUINS.

I remember when I hated the Conf Tournament because

I saw no reason to play in it and risk our #1 seed.

Now, I hate it because I just hate it.

There can be no happy ending for us. Would have been happy to quit last night.

Not looking forward to this one

This might get ugly fast. If Cal starts hitting their 3’s (a likely scenario), we could get blown out. Rag will try to counter with his usual performance, and will wind up 3-for-18 outside the arc.

Of course, that’s just my opinion. I could be wrong.

A major challenge in Tampa

Our game is on Channel 39. But Channel 53 has a triple-header: The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, It Came from Beneath the Sea, and The Monster that Challenged the World.

When was a Bruin ever before caught between such a Scylla of one type of horror show, and the Charybdis of another?

by lil eg not cs on Mar 12, 2010 6:57 PM PST up reply actions

by Nestor on Mar 12, 2010 6:58 PM PST up reply actions

For the rest of the half?

Who do you put in that will be effective?

by lil eg not cs on Mar 12, 2010 6:58 PM PST up reply actions

Yup

You know it’d be nice if we had a little sense of f*cking imagination and used personnel like Bobo and Moser to shift things around.

by Nestor on Mar 12, 2010 7:00 PM PST up reply actions

Imagination?

Moser has no clue what he is doing and is a walking turnover. Bobo can play 5 possessions at most before he is winded

by lil eg not cs on Mar 12, 2010 7:02 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah Moser has no clue

Because he has been used so freaking effectively. You have the audacity to come here attack Moser for not having any clue after what we have been subjected to with Rag and Jerime.

by Nestor on Mar 12, 2010 7:03 PM PST up reply actions

Well, it's kinda true

but in NO WAY is that Moser’s fault.

greg in denver - UCLA guy for life

by gbruin on Mar 12, 2010 7:05 PM PST up reply actions

It doesn;t matter

how many minutes he would’ve/shouldve had. The point is he wasn’t ready to play all year. It doesn’t help if he is out there lost. How does it help if you whiff on all of your screens? I’m not attacking Moser. The fact is Howland watches practice everyday. He isn’t magically going to get better in a game situation

by lil eg not cs on Mar 12, 2010 7:06 PM PST up reply actions

We don't exactly have any clue on what Howland has been "watching"

He hasn’t given us much reason this year to trust him. Moser could have given us few precious mins in recent games. LMR and PAA looked just has clueless in their first year but mins weren’t an issue for him. We know you are close to the coaching staff … so you are going to keep making excuses all along.

by Nestor on Mar 12, 2010 7:10 PM PST up reply actions

No one has a clue

except for Howland and his staff. Have you been with the team since October? I’m not saying Howland has been perfect in all his decisions this year. Moser should’ve been playing more at the end games where we were getting blown out. He isn’t ready for quality playing time yet or any playing time when the game actually matters.

by lil eg not cs on Mar 12, 2010 7:14 PM PST up reply actions

Uh yeah

Yeah because he must have been so much worse than the BS we have seen from Rag this season. There are rumors surfacing that Moser is strongly considering transferring and if this turns out to be true it will be even worse bullsh!t move than basically running Stanback out of this program.

by Nestor on Mar 12, 2010 7:17 PM PST up reply actions

Im not so sure

You can’t really blame Howland for running Stanback out. Everyone in the world thought Bobo would be great.

As for Dragovic, you can’t just look at the terrible shot selection and defense. Roll doesn’t get open without effective screens

by lil eg not cs on Mar 12, 2010 7:19 PM PST up reply actions

As for Rag

We are not just looking at terrible shot selection and defense but his pathetic all around game and complete disinterest in trying hard. Don’t try to tell us what we have seen all season. It is ridiculous.

by Nestor on Mar 12, 2010 7:21 PM PST up reply actions

Ya

I would too…but if you put someone in and they lead gets bigger then the end of the game becomes a moot point.

not good.

Giving up a three at the end of the half is the worst thing to do in a close game. Terrible. I’d much rather have Rago give up a lay up instead of the 3. It’s not just the extra point, but rather that a 3pt shot fires up a bench so much more.

We’re in trouble.

by Nestor on Mar 12, 2010 7:11 PM PST up reply actions

That was a throwback end to a half

A bad offensive scheme, and Rag ending up guarding Randle. Cal couldn’t have asked for anything better. How is it that Randle, all 5 foot two of him, is able to get a three point shot off over Rag at the end of the half? I’ll tell you the answer. Rag can’t get close to anyone unless it’s under the basket.

by andrewsm78 on Mar 12, 2010 7:26 PM PST up reply actions

Good lord

They had to switch. Dragovic was worried that he was going to go right by him (which i would’ve rather had, then the interior defenders couldve picked him up). Dragovic has to step up. Ill take the 2 over the 3 any day

by lil eg not cs on Mar 12, 2010 7:11 PM PST up reply actions

Absolutely

but he can make it all the way to the logo’s and Dragovic should’ve known that. Take a step up and trust the defenders behind you. You don’t want Randle getting hot because of that shot

by lil eg not cs on Mar 12, 2010 7:15 PM PST up reply actions

He was isolated on top

And I don’t know if there is a big guy in the Pac 10 who could stay with Randle. You almost have to concede that shot.

He is far more likely to get hot from the 3 or 4 layups he got off JA

I don’t think he should be rewarding Dragovic with so many minutes but who else are you going to put out there? You can’t have it both ways. Dragovic gives us the best shot at winning. You can’t ask for a winning record and trying to build for next year. With this team it’s one or the other

ANother bad call

I think every foul ML has got tonight is a bad call.

Rag with some garbage time points

Beautiful. Howland’s defense is writing itself.

Officials are actually on our side

They want our season to end just as much as we do.

by ucla139 on Mar 12, 2010 8:06 PM PST reply actions

Maybe but I think they gave Monty the T because

they said “hey we are calling every ticky tac foul we can on UCLA and you’re still complaining?”

by DCBruins on Mar 12, 2010 8:08 PM PST up reply actions

I think ...

our defense is much worse than our offense tonight.

by Achilles on Mar 12, 2010 8:07 PM PST reply actions

Really ...

because as far as I can tell Cal scores every time down the floor.

And it looks like they’re going to break 80.

by Achilles on Mar 12, 2010 8:10 PM PST up reply actions

My bad ...

I thought your post said “defense” has been very good.

My bad.,

by Achilles on Mar 12, 2010 8:10 PM PST up reply actions

Agree

ND inside is okay. Outside he kills us. Yet, CBH let’s him do it.

by DCBruins on Mar 12, 2010 8:10 PM PST up reply actions

Actually

we want ND to foul at this point assuming they dont make the shot and we still want to win.

Good news is

It looks like we are going to have 4 walk ons with scholarships next year, so we can look forward to more heart warming buzzer beaters against azuza pacific.

Can we go

back to throwing the ball at Gutierrez’ face? That was my favorite play of the game.

by BruinFanGA on Mar 12, 2010 8:09 PM PST reply actions

Lol. It's probably over, but...

FSN runs a “Game Winning Touch” in a seven-point game with four minutes left? Teams have come back from double this deficit with this much time left.

True

But they didn’t have BOB!

Geezer in training.

We don't have to worry about Rag next year

but we do have to worry about Coach Howland’s thought process. How do we approach this issue, Bruin Brothers and Sisters. Coach Howland has shown a truly insane streak in his belief that Rag was actually a quality player who should be getting a lot of minutes and an automatic green light, when reality has shown that Rag is an offensive and a defensive liability. That can’t continue or this year will repeat itself.

by Fox 71 on Mar 12, 2010 8:10 PM PST reply actions

Nope

recruiting failures, roster mismanagement, communication failures, etc.

by BlueReign on Mar 12, 2010 8:13 PM PST up reply actions

I agree with Blue on this

Rag has been an easy focal point because his ineptitude is so patent, and Coach Howland’s inability or unwillingness to see it is likewise so patent. But Coach Howland got us no true big man and no point guard. We have guys on our bench who shouldn’t be there, in my opinion. And he just flat out doesn’ tseem to be coaching. There are no adjustments. The team walks the ball up the court, throws it around the perimiter and rarely attacks the basket. There is no vaunted Howland defense. We only have one or two guys who play with any sort of heart.

I believe all of these things are coaching deficiencies.

by Fox 71 on Mar 12, 2010 8:17 PM PST up reply actions

rago

I think rago is a nightmare to coach. I once played with a kid that had skill, but was a total flake. With a flake you can keep on him in practice and force him to do some of those things we know rago can do inside. He is actually a decent basketball player at least on offense if you can keep him focused. However being a total flake once he is in the game it’s in one ear out the other for him. You only have so many timeouts. At the end of the day a flake no matter how good is a cancer. No one wants to play with him. It takes the fun out of the game. I could not play with our flake and I find it hard to believe anyone on that team enjoys playing with our flake. That is on CBH. If I were his coach although I believe he can make 3s I would not let him take any. If he takes a 3 I would yank him. If he wants to shoot anything outside of 15 feet I would yank him.. end of story. That is on Howland 100 pct.

Will hit 3 straight 3’s and get us the win? It happens in disney movies :)

Usually I stick with UCLA obvious season-ending games to the end

Watched to the very last second of both Florida losses (even though they were both over with 4-5 mins left), the Memphis blowout, the Nova blowout, and even the now-forgotten relatively not-close first-round loss to freaking Bobby Knight in ‘05. But the combination of a complete Howland betrayal and the hopelessness of this situation has me dipping out early for the first time since ’04. Thanks, Ben. Stay classy BN; I’ll see you again when football season gets closer.

Abdul-Hamid too

But he’s in for Lee, not Anderson… must be cramping again. Why the heck has Anderson played the whole game?

by Magnusblitz on Mar 12, 2010 8:17 PM PST up reply actions

On O he played decent

He was the worst player on defense, which is saying something the way CAL shot in the second half

GUTLESS GUTLESS GUTLESS

Just sorry for Roll.

Thanks Howland for getting punked by Florida, Memphis, and now LOWLY Cal.

Guerrero = CBS = Can’t Beat Stanford in just about anything. Why does he still have a job? When is the last time UCLA won a national championship in ANYTHING?:???
