With DePaul's basketball season over, the search for the school's next coach is officially underway.
Here are some names we're hearing: Georgia Tech coach Paul Hewitt, ESPN analyst Steve Lavin, Jazz assistant and former DePaul star Tyrone Corbin and, if you want a long shot, UCLA's Ben Howland, who could be looking to leave Westwood.

I sincerely doubt it.
This sounds like speculation on their part. CBH has had a rough season. CBH is finding out what it means to coach in the pressure cooker that is UCLA Basketball; therefore he might want to get out now.
Pure speculation.
CBH is no quitter. He might be unhappy with us after this season. He might be finding out how tough it is to keep everybody happy. But he is no quitter.
The best thing you can do for your children is to love their mother. John Wooden
Speculation is one thing
But someone has to bring up the thought to even speculate. The question is who floated this idea to the guys at Chicago Tribune? Something like this is not just thought of in a vacuum.
Good question
Wouldn’t be surprised if it was a certain old friend of ours on the same list. But, again, just speculating.
MSM does speculation all the time
Who knows, maybe they think he would be a good candidate so they mention it as a way to get CBH thinking……….

Uh no
Respectable outlets don’t speculate on their own unless someone in the industry floats it to them. I have a pretty decent understanding of traditional media to know how it works.
You must not read the Trib's sports section often then
It is not uncommon at all for them to float unsubstantiated rumors regarding the Cubs and Bulls on a regular basis, does not surprise me that they would do the same with the local college teams
This is not the only rumor
I have heard about Ben Howland and other school. Very interesting to see this in trad. media outlet. I will leave it at that.
You're probably talking about the Kentucky opening 3 years ago?
And the only rumor, which seemed true, was that they pursued him. That had much more plausibility and didn’t mean anything, since a school like Kentucky would pursue whoever they want.
2 alternatives
Had to go look at the article on my computer. BB link led me to the Tribune homepage.
This appears to be a “Around Town” column. Columnists often throw out opinions.
OR
Someone at DePaul threw out the name as a way to determine if there might be interest.
Does not mean that CBH, or anyone associated with CBH, has inquired in any way.

Not a quitter...and very stubborn
CBH believes in his system and his abilities. We have all talked about how stubborn he is. He is not going to jump ship.
It might be another story if he was an East Coast or a city guy. But he is a CA/West Coaster — or at least that is what he professes. Wont leave Westwood for that.

What an insult
..being mentioned in the same breath as Lavin is.
CBH should sue the Chicago paper.
Hey, why didn’t they mention Ernie Kent.
doubt it
Haven’t we heard Coach Howland always describe UCLA as his dream job? I wouldn’t think CBH would think about leaving just b/c he and the team had a tough season – he would want to rebound w/ a great season!
and leaving for DePaul doesn't make any sense
No disrespect to DePaul, but I would think that Coach Howland wouldn’t even entertain the idea.
Scary that it’s from a reputable paper, though.
I'd just as soon pick one of the Meyer's grandkids even than
to have the sleazy, lizzard in charge.
merely a statistic
related to number of media monkeys and electronic typewriters
Howland said
that he would stay here as long as we would have him. Well, I think most of us still want him around.
But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
I’m not sure if most Bruins fans want him around right now. Judging by comments I have read on the internet over the past year, I could be convinced that the general consensus is otherwise.
"I never watched baseball on TV. It's slow and boring. I'm not a fan. Never was." - Jeff Kent
To clarify, I still want Howland to remain at UCLA. This is just my observation of people’s opinions.

I'm guessing
it’s the same people who backed the Lizard and CTS. Not liking our bball situation but it’s premature to call for CBH’s head. CBH deserves to make things right.
DePaul's next coach is...
Barbee from UTEP, Billy Gillespie or, wait for it, Tim Floyd. If Howland was going to take a job to get back in the Big East, he’s take the St. John’s job. Two things wrong with the DePaul – the worst facilities, makes ours look like Oregon’s, commuter school, arena is dilapidated and located in Rosemont, a terrrible rush hour drive from the North Side. By the way, the Tribune is as bad as the Sun Times – might as well be a gossip rag like the London Times.
Life is what happens when you're busy making plans.
I am sure CBH doesn't pay any attention to all the backstabbing
He’s staying, even though he’s had a rough year.
Not trying to stir the pot here
because i doubt this headline has any legs to it and i’m a huge supporter of CBH, but if he leaves, he leaves. No coach is bigger than the University and we want a coach who wants to be here, leading us. I still think Howland is the best man for the job. But if ultimately he wants to leave, i say let him leave.

I hope this is not true!!!...
but it would be in line with the nomadic trend of Howland leaving a program after a few years for the next rebuilding project. Someone please tell CBH that he can start rebuilding our basketball team.
If it is true
Then it will be understandable given the percentage of SoCal fans, players, and prep-scene frauds who will never forgive him for coaching defense.
That 'nomadic trend' saw him step up to better programs each time...
not run from a challenge to take a big step down.
Could be a "Legimate Source" and Still Be Totally Wrong
People use the media all the time for their own ends and the media is often a willing b——. Here are three quick reasons why his name could have been floated, none of which means he is leaving or even thinking about it.
1. Depaul was a great power years ago but has fallen a long way. It makes sense for Depaul to try to promote their job with big names that have not even considered them. For example, UCLA’s new coach list post Hazard’s firing had Coach K on it and he never even thought of the job. It was both UCLA’s fanciful wishing at the time AND it was also important for UCLA to signal they were serious after promoting two not-ready-for-prime-time assistants in Farmer and Hazard. Depaul could be in a similar spot and saying it for similar reasons. It signals they are serious in their search and has nothing to do with CBH or UCLA.
2. Again using Coach K, he started his own rumor once that he was leaving to the Celtics. Coach K did this because he was pissed that Duke was not treating him well in contract negotiations. The Celtics at the time were in a coaching search and were interested, it just that Coach K never really wanted it. Duke was nice to him after that and Coach K was happy with the new contract. I don’t think CBH or his people would do this but the logic here goes he is not getting love, so he starts a rumor to get a little love. (And if CBH walked after tonight, where would UCLA be?)
3. Lavin. Lavin is a messed up person. Lavin may very well be enjoying CBH’s losing season. He certianly loves being talked about as a coach. Being mentioned with CBH puts him in the same level of coaching as CBH. And don’t think for a second it would be hard for him to do through friends at ESPN, who are great “legitimate” sources for this kind of thing.
What I am trying to say is there are a number reasons the story could be based on a “legitimate” source but it does not mean CBH is leaving, has though about leaving, or would ever think about leaving.
I don’t have any inside info but if I were with BB at a betting parlor in England, I would bet heavily against it.
The Lavin angle should not be overlooked
He is precisely the type of person — and can claim plausible access, being a former at the same school — to float such rumors, not just about Depaul but all around.
I can bet
This Howland part is not coming from Lavin. As for Lavin we know he is a sleazebag and the fact that his name was floated is not a surprise. His media buddies do it all the time. I consider the Howland bit separate and I will leave it at that for now.
All I'm saying about Lavatory
Is that he could’ve been mentioning this all year long wherever he’s gone (isn’t the big ten tourney in chicago???). He could’ve been saying to everyone who would listen, “Now Ben’s so fed up with those guys even he’s looking around.” If you have reason to believe Howland himself is the ultimate source, I won’t doubt you, but that’s that Lavin angle I’m thinking of.
Howland wouldn't do that to us ... it wasn't Oregon
Anyway, I flagged the DePaul b/c it is out there and it might not be the last time we see speculation like that. And I don’t think all that is just idle chatter. I hope Howland get’s the UCLA situation fixed in next 2 years.
COME ON
Anyone REALLY buying this? LOL. Gimme a break.
