Gotta say I was pretty pleasantly surprised watching this. The kid has a quick release. He can scramble out of pressure and seems to have solid pocket presence.

He does look good
we probably shouldn’t be disseminating this video if we hope to bring this kid aboard as a walkon ;-)

Loyola got a quality HC hire in Mike Christensen. Coach C has sent us two quality players in the last two years from Carson (Morrell Presley and Wade Yandall) and none to SC, and did a great job for us over here. Hopefully he can do the same and send us a few more from Loyola as well as restore the tradition of that program.
I saw Loyola in ‘08 against De La Salle, not sure if he was playing for them at that point. He would’ve been a soph so if he was he probably didn’t see the field. At any rate from the video it looks like his footwork is spot on and he looks very comfortable in the pocket. We’ve had a few coaches’ kids at QB (Kevin Craft and Callahan a few years back) and generally they are good kids to have in your program, as long as it doesn’t turn into the situation that happened at Colorado with Cody Hawkins.

Yeah agree on all counts
I asked you the question because I specifically wanted to hear your takes on his arm strength if you had the chance to see him in person. Sometimes so hard to come to any kind of accurate conclusion based on just highlights tape. Thanks jt.
Jerry played JV in '08
Last season was his first on varsity. I saw him play a few times last year (family friend plays/played for Loyola) and he is a really smart player. Not just smart like you would expect from a coach’s son, but instinctually smart that really shows itself when plays break down and he’s forced to scramble. He always has a grasp of what’s going on. If he had a big arm, he’d be one of the top QB recruits in the country. He really does lack elite arm strength, but I think he can put a little more zip on the ball as he physically matures and get to where he has enough arm strength to make it work at a D-1 level.

If what they’ve been saying about Kevin Prince’s gains in the weight room during the off season is true then I don’t think lack of any strength will be a big deal for long.

I saw him play against
my high school (Mission Viejo) and I completely agree with your take. When I saw him, I was extremely impressed with his awareness and ability to scramble when a play breaks down. What worried me was his arm strength, which I don’t think is going to get a whole lot better. His stats in the game I saw him were average (13-of-20 for 151 yards and no TDs) but I think that had more to do with what was around him, and the fact that Mission’s defense was one of the best in Southern California. Still, I think he has the ability to be a solid quarterback at a D-1 program.

Jerry's a good played
The only thing I really question is his arm strength. I’ve seen him have some issues throwing to the far sideline, which is fine in high school, but could be an issue in college.

Thats the first thing I noticed too.
He places the ball well, but the velocity isn’t there. Half of those passes could have been picked off at the college level if he doesn’t strengthen his throw.

Agree with all takes
He also looks to have a pretty low release point. I don’t know how tall he is, but that could be trouble in college.
All those short passes…remind me of Kevin Craft…but with better decision-making.
But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
