Around SBN: The Ten Worst Swings Of The 2011 Season

Sorry, I have to say it!

My high school daughter was accepted for the UCLA class of 2014 today!

She wants to try out for the cheer squad and support the Bruin teams on the field.  She is die-hard Bruin through and through, just like her two brothers who graduated UCLA not too long ago.

I think I owe it to the karma from posting on Bruins Nation.  Plus she's really great!  Does that make it on topic enough to post?

I hope so.  If your son or daughter just made it, too, I invite you to share your good luck right here!

GO BRUINS!

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

Congratulations to her!

Just getting in is a huge accomplishment. Just reminds me how much I’m glad those days are behind me (not college days, the days wondering where I was going to end up).

Thank you!

The letter said there were over 57,000 applications, the largest pool of candidates in the nation. Under those odds I would never have made it.

Congratulations to her!

I only have one more year after this one, but for all the budget cuts that the state has thrown at UCLA, I firmly believe this school is still on its way up.

If she has any questions about anything, she’s welcome to ask me. I’m sure a lot of the other current students here at BN would share the sentiment as well.

Wow, three kids as Bruins

I can only hope my little guy will follow in his mommy and daddy’s footsteps.

Congrats!!!

I still don’t know about Jen.

Her boyfriend got in. He says she didn’t want to look while she was in Sebastopol — didn’t want to ruin the trip if she didn’t get in.

I got an email from one of my Bruin Brothers from BN explaining how Jen can appeal through the band if she needs to.

And, another from a Bruin Brother in Petaluma letting me know that he and his family are right outside Sebastopol if Jen needs anything.

What a great place this is.

And, once more, I am thrilled for all of the Bruin parents whose kids will have the chance to walk in their steps.

Best to all.

Hearty congratulations

Talk about being a Bruin family. Yours must bring all sorts of great karma to Bruindom. Big congratulations to her, and to you.

by Bruinut on Mar 14, 2010 8:59 AM PST reply actions

Congrats Hy!

I know you would be proud regardless, but hearing how much harder it is to get in these days than it was when we went to school has to make it that much more of a point of pride.

You and all the other BN parents should feel free to post their news when the time comes. To ’66 I wish Jen the best of luck. Insomniac, I hope Tyler gets in someday. And Bruinbabe, I think Jonathon would make a great Bruin.

PS what is this Sebastopol you guys have mentioned?

My son heard this weekend also.

He also got accepted! Right now his #1 choice but still waiting for a few other big names. But for now UW and CalPoly eliminated with yesterdays news. I suspect he will have some tough choices to make in the next 6 weeks.

Our daughter

CONGRATULATIONS!! I know what it is like to have you children follow you on to UCLA. Our daughter followed her Mom and Dad to UCLA and played softball and won a national title. She is so proud of our school and she is so glad she went there also. She wanted to go to UCSB, we took her there one Sunday. When she got out of the car she said that she didn’t like the school. On the way home, we stopped at UCLA. She saw the school from Sunset Blvd. and said ,“Wow, what a beautiful school”. She got out of the car and said, “This is where I want to go to school”. We and she are so glad she did! Again, CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

UCLA Admissions will be in the Bay Area the 26-28th along with Bay Area Bruins Volunteers for admit days in the area. If anyone has questions about being a Bruin, plenty of Bruin Alums will be there to help answer questions. I’ll be at one of the half days.

Congrats to your daughter!

If she wants to do cheer as a freshman she should contact the director Mollie because audition clinics for next year are coming up soon.

Also the cheerleaders do a “Walk like a Bruin” program where your daughter can spend the day with one of the cheerleaders (class, lunch, etc) and attend one of their practices. Definitely worth checking out IMO, if only to get a perspective of UCLA while classes are in session.

But again, congrats. She will have an amazing time here!

I'm sure I couldn't have got in in '75

I think it started getting harder after I got in in ‘64. How do kids do it now, if they haven’t won a Nobel Prize?

by Fox 71 on Mar 15, 2010 9:00 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't know how they do it.

And they have to take so many academics…all the time…no room to take relaxing classes. When I got in, basically everyone who qualified got in. Only Berkeley filled up, and there weren’t so many requirements. It is an amazing accomplishment just to get through high school now, let alone to get accepted by a UC. They should all be proud of whatever they accomplish, but getting in to a UC is really something now. A Nobel Prize couldn’t hurt!

Go Bruins!

Jen Into UCSD -- Hasn't Looked at UCLA's Postings

Whew! She has one UC school in the fold. And, she really liked UCSD last summer when she took a graduate school course in dissecting invertebrates.

She will look at the UCLA posting when she gets home, Wed night. Says she doesn’t “feel good about it” and doesn’t want to ruin her trip.

Apparently, Santa Barbara will post on Monday.

She so wants a band and guard experience that I wonder that, if she does not get into UCLA, she might choose one of the Big 10 schools or UMass which, apparently, has a great guard program.

Keep your fingers crossed.

Wow, this is so much harder as a parent than it was when I was a kid. I don’t remember being anxious, at all. I just applied, got accepted, and showed up (only to be fitted with an Army ROTC uniform and shoes — something I had not expected and did not understand — but that’s a story for another day.)

Jen Did Not Get Accepted

She’s pretty upset and I can’t really talk with her now. I do think she will try the “band route”.

She has a lot of very good choices and I know she will do well wherever she goes, but to her UCLA was the perfect package.

Sad day.

Thank you for all of the support and best wishes.

So Sorry, '66 & Jen

(An error on the admissions committee’s part, no doubt about it.)

My husband told me he’s always been extremely impressed with the UCSD/Scripps and UCSB oceanography/marine biology grads he’s worked with on ocean & bay jobs. They set the standard in their fields.

Tell her from us not to worry about this too much. UCLA is a great school but she has some incredible options. She is going to be a Bruin no matter which school is lucky enough to have her.

by Nestor on Mar 18, 2010 12:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Sorry to hear it

but all hope is not lost. I’m sure there are at least a couple of people on here with current band connections who can help out if you can find a way to get in touch with them. There’s also the transfer route; and UCSD is a fine school as well, as Nestor noted. We’ve seen your clear and insightful writing. If Jen is half as good a kid as you make her out to be, she’ll be successful and happy no matter where she ends up.

by KSBruin on Mar 18, 2010 12:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Condolences

but isn’t it great that the reason for condolences is that one of her choices of great schools isn’t on the menu? Another possible silver lining: Her antennae are in good working order (didn’t you say that she had had a bad feeling about it?).

(Trying desperately for positive)

Somehow, I just know that she, and you, will make the most of this. And, as others have suggested, she may well wind up at UCLA before all is done. Go Bruins. Go Jen.

by Bruinut on Mar 18, 2010 1:47 PM PDT up reply actions

This is UCLA's loss, not Jen's

If she goes the band route, I hope that will work for her.

In the end, though we love UCLA, the individual is always more important than the school. As such, Jen will excel wherever she goes. And we look forward to following along.

I know there are at least a couple of current band members

on BN, if not more. Hopefully they can contact you soon. I graduated in ‘94, but it’s still the same people in charge of the band, so if nothing else let me know on this thread and I’ll do what I can to get you in touch with them. Assuming you hear from someone soon, my thinking is that it can’t hurt and may help to have a current band member try to grease the wheels for you rather than just cold-calling the band office.

Current band members, please keep us posted on what you are able to do, and what if anything us former band members or the greater BN community can do to help.

Band

Hey 66, there is an appeal process through the band. Alot of it has to do with mainly 2 things: playing ability and your instrument. If you’re daughter is a good player and plays an instrument we are currently in need of numbers wise, there is a good chance that she can be submitted for an appeal. Even if she is a good player but not necessarily an instrument we are currently low on, the chances still exist. If you have an e-mail you’re comfortable with giving, i can message you more about it when I get back from Minneapolis, just i’ll need to be reminded back in this direction.

instrument

i’m sorry if i’ve missed this before, what does your daughter play?

by truebluebruin24 on Mar 19, 2010 5:33 AM PDT up reply actions

TrueBlue and my other Bruin Brothers and Sisters

Thank you for the very kind offers of help. I really appreciate them.

Here is my email: steve@prairiefireproductions.com

Jen marched a couple of years as a flute player. As a freshman, she made the Regional Band.

But, then, she joined the Guard which was desperately short people. In Guard and Winter Guard, she thrived. They did well in competitions for the first time. Even though in Guard, she played with the band in concerts and competitions. She made some national music honor society in her sophomore year. And, she’s held several band offices.

This year, Jen has been Captain of her Guard and Winter Guard. She is proficient with flags, sabres and rifles. And, this year, because they did not have an outside coach, she did a lot of the choreography and teaching.

Last fall, Jen went to a Blue Coats try out. Although she was not accepted on the spot, she was invited to the January camp and told it was likely that she would be accepted then. However, she decided that she had too much to do this summer before going off to college.

She’s a Guard beast.

I think I’ve mentioned here that two years ago, outside the Rose Bowl, I saw the UCLA Guard warming up and asked the director what it took to get into the Guard. He told me to talk with Mr. Henderson.

When I told Mr. Henderson that Jen was in a Texas Guard and asked how hard it was to break into UCLA’s, he said something to the effect that he had just come back from Texas, had judged a competition there, and was very impressed with what those kids could do. And,that if Jen ended up needing help, to contact him.

So, as to “instrument” — it is Guard. She is a pretty good flute player and we have a video of her playing at a memorial concert for my father, held in Popper hall, if that matters. But, she wants to be in the Guard.

Jen has a very strong academic record (accepted by everywhere else she has applied including UCSD) so it must have been close.

Any help from any of you — suggestions or ideas — would really help.

Thanks.

One door closes and another opens

for 66 and others who didn’t get the acceptance, there are other great schools out there to go to. UCSD is nothing to be ashamed of that is for certain. Super goood academic school.

UCSD is a great science school.

I sometimes think my son who was accepted at UCSD in Biology but chose UCLA history instead, thinking he could transfer, but it never happened, might have been better off at UCSD. He’s doing great after UCLA, but who knows what would have happened if he went to UCSD and biology? Never know.

Sometimes the kids just try to please us and get messed up in the process. it’s always hard to tell. UCSD may be a better fit in the end for Jen. You never know. What matters is, as I am sure your are doing, you love and support her whatever her decision.

If she winds up at UCSD I can only imagine what a wonderful time she will have there. Great school. Great town. My best to her and you, Class of 66!

Big Congratulationss, Jen and 66!

UCSB is a terrific school in a fantastic place. If you and she are looking for a place to create a memorable college experience, UCSB is mighty hard to beat.

My wife and I had visited UCSB with our son in high school on a little UC tour in 2000. It was around this time of year.

The day was Baywatch perfect. The tour guides (students) had shown us a research library, talked about how the school was unusual in having undergraduate research programs, and showed us some of the institution’s graceful features. Then, they showed us a dorm.

The dorm, only a few stories as I recall (not a high-rise), was on a grass-covered bluff, overlooking a cobalt-blue Pacific ocean. On the lawn, fresh-faced and energetic young adults were playing a spirited game of coed volleyball. Sailboats latched on to gusty breezes, which cooled the bright sun’s warmth. The dorm menu was more like California Cuisine than what we remember as dorm food.

If there had been an option on the application that said “Aside from your child, would YOU like to live here?” we would have enthusiastically checked “Yes!”

by KSBruin on Mar 23, 2010 6:47 AM PDT up reply actions

Congratulations!

I read all the postings and am very anxious! My daughter, Emily, has applied to one school and one school only, UCLA. She refused to apply anywhere else. We haven’t heard yet which makes me even more concerned. But, if she doesn’t get in and can’t get in later on appeal, she’ll go to SMC year-round so she can transfer in early. She, too, is a die-hard Bruin like her dad (‘84), has been by my side at games since she was 3, still goes to games with face paint, has met everyone on the cheer squad (with photos of course) and wants to be a part of the squad on the Yell Crew so very badly. She’s a ham, the life of her senior class and hopefully sooner than later will be joining UCLAHY’s daughter on the cheer squad. I hope the good karma from the Bruins Nation flows to the faithful that still wait to hear. Cheers!
