Baseball Big Test Game Thread
This morning, the Bruins will close out the Whataburger Classic with their biggest game to date this season versus #19 Oklahoma. Like UCLA, Oklahoma has taken their first two games of the weekend over Texas A&M Corpus Christi and Mississippi St. Like the Bruins, the Sooners are on fire to start the season too, entering today 15-1 and winners of ten straight. The Bruins have not played an overly difficult schedule, but Oklahoma is a damn good team and a win over the Sooners would be a nice boost to their resume.
Rob Rasmussen will be on the mound for UCLA with his 3.38 ERA and 15.5 strikeouts per nine innings line for the year after three starts. Rasmussen has yet to earn a decision in any of his three starts and will be looking for win number one on the year versus the Sooners. Oklahoma will hand the ball to a freshman, Ryan Gibson, who is 2-0 with a 3.07 ERA on the young season. The Marlins' draft pick has held opponents to a .212 batting average in 2010.
In the end, this is only one game of 56 this year, but any time you have the chance to beat a potential number one seed, you want to go out there and get it. Being able to extend your perfect start to 13-0 is a nice bonus too. You can follow along with the game on GameTracker (link included) or you can listen live on the Oklahoma radio feed. You can also grab updates from my UCLA baseball twitter. This is your open game thread so use it to keep people updated on the game if you're following along or to share thoughts and questions, as well as anything else you've got.

Oklahoma 1, UCLA 0
Oklahoma scores from 2nd on a single in the bottom of the 3rd. Now it’s end 3rd.
Oklahoma first to score
Walks have been an issue for Rasmussen this year and one bit him in the 3rd. A leadoff walk, sac bunt and single puts Oklahoma up 1-0.

We've evened it up in the 4th
and are still threatening. Rahmatulla walked, Keefer was hit by a pitch and a wild pitch advanced the runners then Dean Espy singled to score one. Runners are still on the corners with one out.

Bruins lead!
A squeeze led to a play at the plate and Keefer was safe at home to make it 2-1. Runners now at 1st and 2nd with 1 out.

Nice!
Steve Rodriguez with a 2 out single scores Espy to put us up 3-1 in the 4th.

That's an end for the Oklahoma starter's day
They’re making a pitching change. They have a good pen and haven’t had to use them much the last two days so I don’t see this one being a game changer.

The new OU pitcher seems to have pretty impressive stats
5-0 with an ERA of 0.57?
Ya, Erben's a really good pitcher
He didn’t throw much last season because of an elbow injury, but when he did, he was lights out. I’m hoping that we can make him throw some pitches and work hard so we can get him out of there soon.

Was thinking the same thing.
Good morning all. Just got here in the 4th inning. Nice to see we got some runs before this guy.

An error by Dean Espy lets a batter reach with 2 out in the 5th
This can be trouble. Ras struggles to get the 3rd out in innings at times and we’re giving them a second chance here.

He won't be in much longer
Savage has had Ras on a shorter leash this year and he’s in a bit of trouble here in the 6th with two on and one out. If he can get through this inning, I’d be surprised if he comes out for the 7th.

Yes!
Struck him out on his 99th pitch of the game. I’d be shocked if he goes back out there in the 7th, but 6 innings, 1 run, 7 strikeouts…Rob did his job. Great start for him and hopefully we hold on because he deserves his first win.

Better yet
I hope programs especially ours – strongly consider streaming these games online. It would be a huge way of building a bigger audience and fanbase.
You'd think we would do it soon
Almost every top program in the country has it and at least 4 in the Pac-10 do it too with Washington and Stanford planning to add it next year.

Yeah
Given how good we are becoming … there needs to be a sense of urgency. Hopefully very very soon. I am really encouraged about how those guys have been promoting the football program via youtubes (something we have been asking for). So hopefully this is a matter of time as well. We just gotta keep nagging.
I would think that if we can really put something together this year
so people show up at JRS this year, that might push them to get it done for 2011.

Well, the Pac-10 baseball games were a part of the FSN contract
that included basketball and all other non-revenue sports. The conference did an outstanding job, getting a full two Pac-10 baseball games on TV this year! Oh, and the conference doesn’t have an online video setup like the ACC or Big West. We’re on fire! I really hope the Morgan Center gets it going with online video soon. It would be awesome!

That was huge
Klein has had some problems when he doesn’t start innings. When he has to come in mid-inning and especially when he has to do it with a man on and work out of the stretch, he’s been a bit of a slow starter. No problems there though. Great job.

Good job on the play by play, guys.
And I have seen one steal of home ever (not counting high school or playing in the army (once I stole home in the army).) Carl Crawford for the Rays. It is about as exciting a play as you can see. It even made Mrs. Fox 71 a fan, and that’s hard to do.
