Bruins Starting March Madness Early Game Thread

Keeping the mojo going with yesterday's picture as the Bruins go for the Pac-10 Tourney title (Photo Credit: b_d)

Taking down the #2 team in the country? Sounds like March Madness to me and it's our women's basketball team who will be looking to take their postseason play to a new level today when they play Stanford in the championship game of the Pac-10 Women's Tournament at Galen Center. The Bruins got their first ever win over USC at Galen Center yesterday when they took down the Trojans, 59-53. Now, they set their sights on bigger fish.

The Bruins lost both of their games to Stanford this year, a close one at home to the Cardinal then a blow out in Palo Alto. Things are never the same in March, though, and by beating USC at Galen Center yesterday, UCLA proved it. Coach Nikki Caldwell has turned the program around in just two years and can send a message to the country today that her program is ready to not just be a good Pac-10 team, but a damn good team period.

ESPN's newest Bracketology has the Bruins as a #6 seed, but a win over the Cardinal could move them up some and help their case for staying on the West Coast in the 1st/2nd rounds. There's a lot on the line today and you can bet our fellow Bruins will take over Galen Center and paint it blue just like they did yesterday. For those of you not at the game, you can watch it live on FSN. The game tips at 3 pm PST and should be a ton of fun. Who needs a selection show when you have Bruins aiming for a title? This is your game thread so have at it.

It took them about 5 seconds

to make it clear that they value conference tournament performance 10x more than they should.

4 days > a whole season??

Another reason conference tournaments are stupid.

Except that

Duke has a higher RPI, higher SOS and is rated higher in both Sagarin and Pomeroy. For all the supposed strength of the Big East, it’s only one spot above the ACC in the RPI, about even with the ACC in Sagarin, and 2 spots lower than the ACC in Pomeroy’s ratings.

Caught couple of games ....in passing today

Every time some guy took off balanced, dumb 3 point shots or made stupid mistakes … made me think of Rags. It will take a long time to forget the scars from this season.

Down 17-9 at the 12 minute timeout

They have 7 points off turnovers. We have to hold onto the ball.

So if you're from a power conference

you hop up two seeds and if you’re not, you drop two, regardless of how good you actually are? That’s what it looks like. UTEP, Temple, Cornell, Old Dominion, BYU should all be higher and I can’t see justification for Cal, Florida and Notre Dame, among others, for being as high as they are.

Florida got a gift

I think Cal is about right. I could have seen a 9. I think 10 would have been too low.

Notre Dame is overrated in everything they ever do.

Cornell and UTEP…love those 12’s!

Offense looks brutal

Turnovers, missed shots, confusion. We’re still in the game and only eight points behind because of defense though. Why? DEFENSE.

DG being interviewed

discussing the decsions about Duke > Syracuse, he said they considered the “body of work” and how they finished the season.

Now discussing Purdue’s low seed, saying it is due to Hummel’s injury.

We looked outmatched

These Stanfords girls are huge ( 8 of them are over 6 feet). We can’t get inside at all.

I guess this is why they've been #2 for most of the season

with their only loss coming to a team of 8-foot behemoths at UConn.

Barring some miraculous comeback, I can live with this.

Halftime speech

We just got a brief shot of Coach Caldwell talking to the team in the locker room.

She didn’t look like she was just happy to be there.

We definitely found a gem in this one.

What was really cool

to see the looks on our players faces. They were locked in. Not sure if its going to make a difference on the court. Stanford is soo good.

by Nestor on Mar 14, 2010 4:27 PM PDT up reply actions

True

We are overmatched today. But with this Leader, we won’t be for long

greg in denver - UCLA guy for life

by gbruin on Mar 14, 2010 4:29 PM PDT up reply actions

We were overmatched, but

it would have been helpful if the calls didn’t go overwhelmingly their way. I swear it seemed like the refs were looking for an excuse to give Stanford the ball at times. I’m not saying it would definitely have changed the final outcome, but it was so systemic throughout the entire game, that you really can’t claim that it definitely wouldn’t have either.

Half of the reason we couldn’t get inside is that Appel was getting away with all kinds of fouls on both ends of the court. When they subbed in Tinkle for her towards the end when Appel had 4 fouls, it was easier to get inside, so if she had been kept honest on the fouls, either she would have fouled out, or we would be dealing with better chances of getting inside.

That said, we should have been able to counter with outside shooting, which was sorely lacking today. We were 2-14 behind the arc, and between that and their virtual free reign to foul, all they had to do was load up the paint, prevent penetration, and wait for the refs to call enough on Jasmine Dixon to get her out of the game. Speaking of Jasmine, she had a ridiculously good night, scoring 20pts on 19 minutes played, despite injury and sketchy (at best) calls forcing her out.

Recap

what with studying for my final tomorrow after just getting back from the game, my recap may be a little shorter tonight, and probably not up until later in the evening. Sorry, but gotta study now after putting it off all weekend for the tournament

You got nothing to apologize for. Take care of finals first … we will bump whatever recap you can do whenever you can do it. Thank you so much again for all the posts this season.
