Caldwell's Kids "Earn" an Eight Seed
I'm no expert in women's basketball, but it seems to me that Nikki Caldwell and Co. deserved better than an 8 seed.
They were ranked #23 in the country and won 10 straight before getting beaten badly by Stanford in the Pac 10 conference final. That game apparently meant more to the committee than the 10 straight wins. If UCLA gets through the first round, they'll be forced to play once-beaten Nebraska.
I figured they'd be a six seed and would have been happy with it.
I look forward to the comments from the Bruins Nation experts that are sure to follow.

Personally, I don't get it
Our RPI is #21 and we’re ranked #22, finished the season 9-1 if they look at our last 10 games, i really just don’t see how this team gets an 8. I thought 6 was deserved and 7 was still possible, but this seems highly suspect. Lack of westcoast respect

I think the Stanford game ...
really impacted the committee. We lost three times to Stanford and I guess they just think — despite our overall record — that we’re not ready to compete with the top teams.
That’s the only thing I can think of, because it seems like we earned a higher seed.
Wow again
No USC. Makes me happy, but further proves the lack of respect for the Pac-10

So ...
just two teams out of the Pac 10?
If I were a conspiracy theorist, I’d wonder if the Pac’s lack of a relationship with ESPN hurts us? Unlike the men’s tournament (CBS) this is ESPN’s baby and Pac 10 teams don’t have that relationship with ESPN.
Or maybe I’m just paranoid.
You can be paranoid...
…and still be absolutely correct.
BSPN and the NCAA-holes make a fine pairing.

It's like football
Out west it is has been USC and then everyone else. In women’s basketaball it’s Stanford and the everyone else because they have been so good for so long. To get any sort of recognition you have to over-achieve, and the recognition you get is never enough.
Well ...
if we want to prove we deserved a higher seed, we need to really whack NC State in the first round.
There might not be much we can do about Nebraska, but we should take this slight out against the Wolfpack.
the only thing we can do
is win anyway. seeding is important, sure, but hell, let’s beat NC State and then upset Nebraska. I don’t see why not.

Agree with ESPN Conspiracy
During the regular season, no Pac 10 games are ever featured on their scoreboard if they’re not involved in a top 25 game. If you note how many conferences do have games posted, it would appear that ESPN continually snubs us. ESPN could be such a great resource, but when they play favorites like they often do (Yankees – Red Sox anyone), it gets disheartening.

Experts talking about their thoughts on the field. 2 of the 4 experts call UCLA as the team deserving of a better seed

the same article shows
3 of the 4 analysts saying that Nebraska will be the first #1 to lose…why not to us?
I must say that their final fours are not that creative...
Collectively 14 one-seeds and 2 two-seeds? Really?
I guess
if you are going to win it you have to beat them at some point…
The ranking sucks
By pure math, if you are ranked 23rd, you should be somewhere between 6th and 7th. seed. The committee is obviously biased. Losing to No.2 team in the nation three time is legit. Again, If we are good, I don’t mind playing Nebraska. Winning the second round will be a good season for us.
Disappointing seed
I have been a f9ollower of womens hoops for over 16 years. we should have been a 6 and at least a 7 and best case scenario a 5. We have an uphill battle to get out of Minnesota but first we have to beat NC State which beat SUC. As far as coverage by ESPN goes they never giveresults of womens teams not in their top 25. However, thay do show womens games for which there are commercials so they seem to be willing to make a buck off the womens game. I think there is a name for that. ESPN neber gives any pub to Pac-10 unless it is to SUC and their shill-Shelley Smith.
Hoopefully thgis will change as even Ja6y Billious is begining to understand that the ACC is not the best conference.
Anyway, congratulations to our Lady Bruins and to Coach Caldwell and her staff and show them in Minneapolis how good you are. GO Bruins
I like it
This gives us an easier Sweet 16 game! That’s the best optimism I could come up with.

Horrible placement
Its seems like a similar pattern, at least compared to the men’s bracket this year. I know that many analysts are complaining that there isn’t enough people on the committee that know anything about basketball. After seeing these two brackets I agree.
It sucks that we weren’t placed higher, but there is a lot of potential upside to this seed. First, the team made it in the field with at large bid! Second, assuming we win the first game and Nebraska moves on, we will have a quick shot at a #1, and the weakest projected #1. Its a win-win scenario. No matter what, it would give enormous coverage to UCLA and its women’s bball program, which will make recruiting easier (not that coach has any trouble as seen by the talent brought in this year). And if we win, even more coverage. I think UCLA could pull off that upset. I’d rather face a number one early before they get into any kind of rhythm like many find late into the tourney (ie our scare vs TA&M and WKY for mens). Heck, we could repeat what the men did to Cincy during the lizard’s term. I like our chances.
GO BRUINS!!! CHEER LIKE CHAMPIONS!!!
While i should be studying
I’m very fascinated looking up the comparisons between UCLA and NC State for our first round game. When i finish finals, i’ll put up a scouting report on the game, but suffice it to say for now, on paper it seems UCLA has an advantage over the wolfpack

Annoyed
I was watching the selection show with my friends on Princeton’s Women’s basketball team (an 11 seed in the Dayton region FYI) and when this came up I was very annoyed. Stanford and UConn may be unstoppable but the overall body of work this season by our Bruins is definitely more deserving of a six seed. Although most of us would have considered it a shocking upset if they lost, UCLA beat Princeton women’s team by 10 but that doesn’t take into account the fact that Princeton had a lead until 3 minutes to go when UCLA took control of the game. When you consider that Princeton is 26-2 and beat two other tournament teams (while losing to two other tournament teams in UCLA and Rutgers) and is the first team out of the top 25, thats a pretty good win. Considering they come from the Pac-10 and were the clear #2 in that conference the Bruins definitely should have been a fifth or sixth seed, its a shame, whereas I’m not that upset because the Ivy League is barely a mid-major conference (although we are in UConns region so this year I’m only shooting for the Sweet Sixteen) and an 11 seed is unprecedented. That said, Nebraska is more vulnerable than Stanford (having lost recently in the Big-12 tourney while Stanford’s loss was to UConn) and I’d love out Bruins to knock them off in the second round. Notre Dame is dangerous in the region as well however so its not as clear sailing after Nebraska as bk bruin suggests. Good thing my two teams are highly unlikely to play each other in this tourney so I can root for both.
P.S. If you are looking for an upset watch the Princeton-St. Johns game on Saturday at 12:30 and look out for Niveen Rasheed and Lauren Edwards for Princeton. Four of our five starters average double digit points and Rasheed (heavily recruited by UCLA and other Pac-10 schools) has several double-doubles this year

This probably has no bearing on how our basketball teams fared this season, but
one of our coaches has a considerably better figure than the other.
