OT: From Bruin to Wolverine.

I am pleased to inform all of Bruins Nation that I was just accepted into the University of Michigan's School Of Social Work Program! The MSW Program is currently ranked the #2 Program in the country for Social Work =) I am very excited and humbled about the opportunity that awaits me in Graduate School and to continue my studies in Higher Education at another prestigious university!

Are there any UCLA Alumni/Fans/or any family members that you know in the Ann Arbor or Detroit Region that I can chat with about their experience living in Michigan??

Star-divide

There is an open house for all admitted students next thursday in Ann Arbor, MI. I will be on campus from 03/25-03/28 visiting the campus and prospective housing.

I would deeply appreciate any help/advice from Bruins Nation, as I embark in this next journey of my life =)

Congrats!

Have you been Ann Arbor before? I have been there once. Just a beautiful campus and folks from UMich are awesome. UCLA/Michigan … as perfect combination as it can get.

Thank you so much N

I have been there a couple times but it was a couple years ago. My ex-girlfriend attended Michigan and I fell in love with the campus!

I agree with you, UCLA/Michigan are both dream schools for me. Now..if only UCLA can schedule Michigan sometime soon for football! lol I know Michigan has an open date next year for an opponent…hmmmm lol

What did you do while in Ann Arbor?

Went there to visit friends

So it was mostly going out to bars. It was about 8 years ago.

Thoughts about Ann Arbor

Congrats on your acceptance! Here are my observations from having spent two years getting an MBA at Michigan’s Ross School of Business:

1. Culture: Michigan is a fine school; I met a lot of smart and motivated students in the MBA program, and you probably would in the School of Social Work, too. The overall student body isn’t as academically minded as UCLA’s, but within the graduate schools it’s strong. There is a vibrant party scene as the weekend approaches and huge interest in football and intramural sports. The campus isn’t as multicultural as UCLA’s (there are few schools that are), but you will meet a lot of international students.

2. Weather: I’ve lived in the Boston area and Indiana, so I’m used to frigid weather, but Michigan’s is more pronounced. The air is colder and there is no ocean effect, so snow may fall in December and stay on the ground for half a year. If you are busy with graduate school work, you may not mind, but your enjoyment of fall colors and spring breezes will only occur for a minority of the time you are on campus. If you like snow sports, it’s a great place. One of my classmates played hockey in the campus stadium all winter long.

3. Reputation: Michigan has a strong reputation in social work and other programs. For business school, Michigan usually ranks in the top 5 or so, but the school does not command the same respect in the public eye as a handful of other “top” b-schools do, so try to get a sense of how well Michigan’s reputation in social work extends to the places you would like to call home after graduation.

4. Sports: Outside of football and intramural sports, hockey’s perhaps the next most popular. Interest in basketball much lower than it is at UCLA. The Wolverines were a little better during my time than they are now, but they often played before half-empty stadiums. Football almost always sells out. If you like sports, one key question to think about is, “Can I root for the Wolverines?” I found that, after years of rooting for UCLA against Michigan, I simply could not bring myself to root for Michigan. On the rare occasions UCLA and Michigan met in a game, I’d walk across campus with blue & gold rather than maize & blue, and that choice was never up for debate. If you’re a hard-core college sports fan, the matter of allegiance might be a crucial factor in your overall happiness on a campus.

5. Campus resources: The student union is great, there are many libraries sprinkled around campus, it’s easy to get around via shuttle bus, and the school of social work is well-situated for many activities. The school of social work has a new building, so resources within the program are probably first-rate.

6. Alumni life: Michigan has a decent alumni network. Alumni clubs in different parts of the country seem to be better-financed and more active than those of many other schools. Michigan’s also developed a series of online databases and other tools to help alumni with postgraduate communications. Many alumni are too fixated on football to talk at length about much else (especially the ones from the undergraduate side). If you like sports, that might be just fine, but if you like to discuss social policy at alumni parties, you might be disappointed.

7. Housing: Housing is generally more affordable than it is around UCLA, and the competition for space near campus is not as fierce. You can easily find a room-sharing arrangement in a home or an apartment building.

Enjoy the visit to Ann Arbor. If you have time, hang out in student lounges after dinner to get candid comments from students. Good luck with your decision!

Thank you so much Bryan

I always appreciate an honest reponse when it comes to things like this. This is great information I know I will definitely consider and use. I know that when I go next week I am going to get the students perspective on a Lot of things!

Thanks again!

Thanks!

There’s a good chance I’m going to U of M for medical school next year (at least 50%), for which I got accepted a few months back. Have you had the chance to observe their hospital / had any medical school related experiences?

by dokein on Mar 20, 2010 10:48 PM PDT up reply actions

Hey dokein

I know a couple of docs on faculty at UM now, and a couple friends who went to med school there (though >10 years ago). Shoot me an email (gbruin@comcast.net) if you want me to get you in touch with any of them,

I really appreciate that. I might get in touch with you in a couple weeks after things settle here (super busy at work)—would your offer still be standing?

by dokein on Mar 20, 2010 11:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Offer expires in a couple weeks and a day.

Just kidding. Get a hold of me anytime that works for you!

Great medical school..

Congratulations on getting accepted into U of M. It’s a great medical school with a very good Match placement record. I went to U of M for my anesthesia residency/peds anesthesia fellowship and was on faculty there for a little bit before going to NYC. I got into University of Michigan medical school as my first acceptance but ended up choosing UC San Diego when I got accepted there off the wait list. I think U of M matches overall to better residencies than UCSD actually.
Ann Arbor is a nice college town with lots of things to do. I would definitely take advantage of watching some games in the Big House (football), Crisler arena (basketball), and Yost Ice arena (ice hockey) while you are there. Lots of bars (check out the sangrias at Dominic’s) and local hangout places to go to as well. Unfortunately, I don’t know too many people in the medical school faculty but I do know a lot of the anesthesiologists there if you are interested at all in anesthesia as a specialty. If I can be of help with anything, please feel free to shoot me an email: bruin1996@yahoo.com.

Go Bruins!

Go to Michigan!!!

You will love it. It has a great medical center and the Med School and Hosptial that are right on campus, so you feel like you are part of the university, unlike some institutions with their medial schools and hospitals that are located on separate campuses.

In addition, the education is exceptional. The professors are great and for the most part love to teach and are not arrogant. The med school student body is excellent with only few students who still retain their “gunner” attitudes from undergrad. Their are lots of parties on campus and at the med school fraternaties. You will meet students from all over the US.

And the football games in the fall are absolutely spectacular. Imagine 110,000 fans at every game.

One warning, Michigan is not California. It can be very cold for very long stretches. But Ann Arbor is the queintessential college town with lots of great places to eat (Zingerman’s and Angelo’s) and always something (music, arts, theater, sports, etc) going on.

It was a great experience.

Go to Michigan!!!

Forgot to mention. University of Michigan Medical School – Class of 1985.

Wow,

Hard to put together a better outside glance of Ann Arbor and Michigan than that. Excellent work Bryan.

In terms of housing, you’re not going to have much trouble finding places to live. There are numerous “apartment hunter” services and leasing offices. One thing to keep in mind is that once you’re off the main campus, public transit can get a little iffy, so plan on either living close enough to the SW school to walk or have a car. Your best resource for a more precise neighborhood of where to live will likely come from your contacts in the SW school, but basically consider anything between the Highway and the Union undergrad housing. The northern side of campus will have a little more space and more grad students.

Congrats on your acceptance to Michigan. I think you’ll find it’s a great place to live, work and learn. Hell, if my Notre Dame friends can come to love Ann Arbor and root for Michigan when they’re not playing ND, I’m pretty sure a Bruin could do the same!

Congrats again!

This is nice:

But what about your BFFs from tOSU? Do they fall in love w Ann Arbor the same way if they make it into your grad school?

Congrats!!

Well done!

Don’t forget, you can root for UM and the Bruins. Most of the professors I work with attended different post grad schools than their undergrad campuses. They generally root for all their schools.

I may work with the Waves, but I'm still a Bruin!

Agree on becoming a secondary fan...

After most of a year I’ve come to root for Kansas (despite both football and basketball teams flaming out this year). There’s nothing wrong in cheering for your new team in any game they are not playing against UCLA.

Loving it!

That’s so great that the UCLA community always looks out for each other! Once a bruin.. Always a bruin!

I can’t wait to start at Michigan :)

On being a Bruverine...

As someone who was born in Detroit, grew up in LA, and went to both UCLA (undergrad/grad) and University of Michigan (grad/med school), I can attest to the great similarities of these two institutions.

Both have outstanding academic reputations with top ranked medical, law, and business schools as well as several other highly ranked undergraduate and graduate programs.

Both strive for scholastic and athletic excellence. Michigan is 19th and UCLA is 32nd in the US News and World Report rankings of World’s Best Universities. http://www.usnews.com/articles/education/worlds-best-universities/2010/02/25/worlds-best-universities-top-400.html

Unlike the Trojan and Notre Dame “Families,” both UM and UCLA are open, responsible, accountable, and often self-critical institutions with demographically, philosophically, and intellectually diverse students and faculty.

As a child in the 60s and 70s, I was a Michigan Football and UCLA Basketball fan. College football and basketball did not get any better than these two institutions.

You will find that both institutions respect the others’ academic reputations (there were four UCLA alums in my med school class).

Also, I have found that a large wolverine looks a lot like a small bruin.

Congrats to both of you Bruins for also becoming Wolverines. You will love it.

Go Blue!! Go Bruins!!
