Tyler Lamb incredible. Mater Dei loses to Westchester.
Just got back from Costco Center where Westchester beat Mater Dei to become the Southern California representative in the State Championships next week. Some observations from the game:
- We are going to love Tyler Lamb. The guys was the best Mater Dei player on the floor tonight, and quite possibly the best player in the entire game. He scored 32 points against a great team, and at times he was unstoppable. I tell you what.............JA couldn't play with the guy right now. Now way in hell. This guy should step in immediately to a huge role on the team. If he doesn't, I will be stunned. I don't care if he is a freshman or not, CBH better find a role for this guy and it better include putting the ball in the basket, because Lamb is a legit player who can fill it up. If you haven't seen him play, just imagine a guy who is the exact opposite in every single skill or attribute (shooting, ballhandling, rebounding, defense, desire, work ethic to name a few) than Dragovich. The only thing he doesn't do as well as the shitty Siberian is flail :)
-Dwayne Polee Jr. may be the best high school athlete I have ever seen and I pray he never plays in South Central. While he isn't the best Los Angeles high school basketball player I have ever seen, he may be the best athlete. Talk about a guy with that size who can run and jump out of the gym, just incredible.
-Jordin Mayes is my type of player. He totally outclassed Mater Dei point guard Gary Franklin Jr. (Cal signee) and showed that we totally missed the boat by not going after him sooner. If he were to come to Westwood, I have no doubts that he would be starting by the start of the Pac-10 season. Instead, we'll have to figure out ways to stop him as a Wildcat in Arizona. He may not lead them in scoring, but he is one of those guys who will be so valuable because he can do so many things well. I really enjoyed watching him play.
-Gary Franklin Jr. was a disaster. I have seen him play before and he was never this bad. I have never been a huge fan. I think he'll be a good player at Cal, but nothing to write home about. He missed two huge free throws, and just seemed to be out of it all night.
That's it. If you went to the game, you saw a good, but not great game. Westchester brought it, but Mater Dei (except for Lamb) was a big dud. They tried to come back but couldn't do it. Still a fun night and I have enjoyed this game for years and years. It just proved, once again, how these good City teams really bring go the court when it really counts. Good Luck Westchester next week.

How much has Polee improved from last year?
I saw him as a junior and his athleticism was really remarkable, but he just didn’t seem like someone that could contribute in college. He wasn’t tall enough or anywhere near strong enough to play inside, and his shooting and ball handling were poor too. But I did read an article recently saying that he had improved a lot.
He has improved in those areas
but needs to improve even more to be a force in college. However, he is one of those guys who is so damn athletic that he’ll get his stats just based on him being so damn athletic. Because the college game loses its best basketball players (the Kevin Love’s, the John Wall’s) after one year to the NBA, guys like him dominate the college game because they aren’t playing against the truly good players on a consistant basis. He is a “freak” athlete and is improving. I compare him to Tyrus Thomas, the former LSU player from a few years back who had highlight reel dunks and plays in college, but can’t get away with that stuff in the NBA cause he never developed the necessary skills to be successful. I am not saying Polee won’t. He just might develop those skills, and if he does, it’ll be scary.
This is really encouraging muir
I think I am going to keep my expectations in check though. Even if Tyler turns out be solid I don’t think he will get more than 12-14 mins a game and replace Lee in the lineup (presuming sanity will prevail and Lee will return even if he “tests” the NBA waters).
With regard to PT
I think Howland has proven that he will experiment with moving players out of their natural position if it means getting the most (poised) talent on the floor. I inserted the parenthetical for anyone who would make the JMM and BL argument. Those guys didn’t get time (except for BL late this year) because they weren’t ready to play at the pace of the college game.
LV.........
for the most part, I agree with you in regards to young talent. However, the way that Drago was used this year and throughout his career has totally scared me and until I see differently my faith in CBH in regards to “playing the best, most talented, hard-working and deserving guys” will diminished. Historically you are right, but the way he used Drago this year has me wondering if CBH is the same guy with the same values and principals as a basketball coach. Next year will be telling.
Athletes like Polee
I have not seen him play, but from your description, I’m impressed. We need an infusion of athleticism into the program. He should be a good defender, shotblocker, and rebounder. These are key skills in the CBH system. He also looks like a 4 year guy and may develop more offensive skills.
Why not recruit Polee?
One think I noticed in the few tournament games I've looked at
is that most of the big guys you see still playing are BIG. They are not just tall, they are big, heavily muscled adults. Our guys still look like skinny kids compared to a lot of these other guys. I don’t know if that’s a mis-perception by me, or if our guys really need to hit the weight room.
Great to hear TL performing in the clutch
Great players play great in big games. Could he be in the JF/AA mold and restart the program?
