Sunday 2nd Round Madness|UCLA W. Basketball Tourney Open Thread
Perhaps Ryan is sleeping in or hungover after partying with his friends from Northern Iowa. :-) I don't have any tourney related observations to add beyond what I wrote here.
For those who are taking in the Madness, here is the open thread for Sunday. If you are not around a TV or stuck with a game you don't care much about, the handy dandy CBS widget below lets you watch any game from your laptop:
Also, we will use this open thread to track the women's basketball game, which is is set for 6:30pm PST on Sunday on ESPN2. The official site will have a game tracker. You can read all about that matchup by going here, here, and here.
Enjoy your Sunday. Fire away.
GO BRUINS.

LOL at Ryan
The guy deserves some rest…such a great contributor. Speaking of sleeping in, I just moved to Connecticut, so it’s kind of nice watching games in the afternoon rather than the morning on the west coast. Sleeping in on Sunday is going to be great!
As a personal aside, I will be rooting for Michigan State (dad’s alma mater), Ohio University (mom’s alma mater), and Northern Iowa (just moved from Iowa, some friends went there). It sucks UCLA is out, but the tourney is still a lot of fun, which is suprising to me.
I took in part of St. Marys game yesterday
Really intrigued with Randy Bennett. Solid coach. Missed the KU game because we were out and about. Not sure how much I will get to take in yesterday but the thread is for all of you who can compartmentalize and block the thought of Bruins out when watching these games.
Syracuse is showing good D now..
now the ’zags are stuck shooting outside.
My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing $C.
Rye is partying with baseball fans.
The baseball team deserves some mad love, and I hope the students get on board and stick with them.
But before that, there are games to watch and upsets to cheer for (since my bracket looks like Drago’s shot chart with a million X’s and only a couple circles) and junk food to consume. But no beer b/c I work this evening. Go…ahem…Cal!

I'm still upset that the student store has no shirts/caps/anything for the women's teams!
Go Bruins!
That's not good
Whose responsibility is that? I assume the store is just an outlet. Shouldn’t our glorious marketing department be the one producing and pimping that sort of product?

For example...
I’m willing to bet the bookstores at UConn and Tennessee and the Furd have women’s BB gear.

What are you talking about?
I received an e-mail on 3/19, 8 am that “On the road to the Final Four” UCLA shirts available, showing bracket, UCLA Bruins & black NCAA tournament logo.
Unless they are available on line only?
Only available on-line
I went to the student store, hoping to save on shipping, and they didn’t have them or anything else regarding woman’s bball nor gymnastics. The woman working there told me about the gymnastics. She said after meets, people flock in wanting them and there aren’t any.
Go Bruins!
Good charity cause - OT
Have you all seen this thread?
It’s a long shot, given the number of registered members here, but it would be awesome to win a donation to a great cause. You can do it during a TV timeout, of which there are (too) many opportunities.

Brag post
just checked my ESPN bracket challenge page and I’m currently ranked #1,995 in the nation, 100th percentile. I’m going to enjoy it while it lasts, doesn’t look like my champion pick is gonna come through (frickin Jayhawks).
Me neither
I also picked the Jayhawks, but I had a had a minor victory! The pool I am in rewards 20 bucks to the person with the most 1st round points (the bigger the upset the more points are added). Out of 165 people I won! At least I picked well for one round! :)
"The entire world that bleeds blue and gold ... they have been dying for this." - Coach Rick Neuheisel
How did that scoring work?
I’d be interested to know how I would have done. I had the ODU, St Mary’s, Murray St, Cornell, Washington and G Tech upsets (only missed on Missouri and Ohio).
I have West VA in my Final 4
but I love watching Mizzou. Swarming D, lots of fast breaks, they play like they have a 10 second shot clock, and my parents are alums. Fun game so far.

C'mon Wisconsin
This is not looking good for various reasons.
Maryland is losing - very good news
This means Washington Post will lay off March Madness coverage and I won’t have to be reminded that a tourney is going on via the local media here.
I forgot to put up a baseball thread
So I’ll toss some updates in here.

Izzo is a much better in-game coach
I’d say they are fairly comparable in terms of recruiting and preparation. CBH needs to learn to make better adjustments on the fly when the preparation isn’t working.
greg in denver - UCLA guy for life
Not just a better in-game coach
Izzo has way better track record of building and sustaining great programs. Howland is not in Izzo’s league. Howland is a very good coach. Izzo is an elite coach and one of the better ones in modern era. Howland has ways to go to be in Izzo’s league.
sustainability is the key difference
the records of both guys in their first ~6 years at MSU/UCLA are pretty comparable, and CBH inherited a far worse squad; but Izzo has been able to sustain the success.
Also, I am assuming the UCLA coach has some significant recruiting advantages over the Michigan State coach, which adds to the significance of what Izzo has accomplished. I hope he doesn’t leave MSU for a glamor program in the East.

For anyone who didn't see it
MSU led the entire game even after losing Kalin Lucas late in the first half to injury. They were up 15 with 12 mins left, and up 12 with 5 mins left. Maryland went on a blistering run that included several full-court pressure steal/layup combos to take an 81-80 lead with 39 seconds left on a Greivis Vasquez jumper. MSU then scored to make it 82-81, and Vasquez hit another tough jumper to make it 83-82 with six seconds left. MSU hurried the ball upcourt and hit a three at the buzzer.
Good way to liven up a Sunday afternoon, IMO.

Pitching and hitting

How’s the fielding percentage? Any weaknesses exposed yet on this team?

Not an outstanding percentage
But solid. They were 3rd in conference before the weekend. They cover a ton of ground too so above-average but not great D as a whole.

The guy that was suppose to be at bat (in this case came up to bat 2nd)
was called out before he saw a pitch. The guy that took his at bat had been walked and remained on first.
Did the ump make the call himself
or did the UCLA coaches point it out?
greg in denver - UCLA guy for life
Funny thing though, Game tracker showed the incorrect batting order.
Not sure what the deal was with that.
I once gave up 3 doubles in a row in Pony League
The first batter hit a gapper to the wall, but he was actually the last batter of the previous inning so he was out of order and was ruled out. The next batter was the batter who should have led off the inning. He short hopped the wall for a double. My coach pointed out that by batting second, he was out of order and was subsequently ruled out. Their coach conferred with the scorekeeper and ump and finally got the proper third batter of the inning. I was laughing pretty hard at this point and the the batter promptly bounced one over the fence and this time, was permitted to stay at second. I think I seriously bore down at that point and got out of the inning, mostly so I could forever say I gave up 3 consecutive doubles without allowing a run.
greg in denver - UCLA guy for life
Still 6-0
Rob Rasmussen gets the hook with 2 out in the 7th. 6.2 innings, 2 hits and no runs for the junior but hes responsible for 2 men on.

I'm with you
but I think they are way underrated this year (in comparison with hype given to Kansas, Kentucky and the Big East teams). Duke has hardly a bad loss on its resume this year, and has impressive wins – they even managed to beat Big West 4th place finisher Long Beach State…

I'm Watching Duke Dismantle Cal's Defense
Watching Duke today I’ve got 2 thoughts:
1. Kyle Singler may have been better for us than K-Love in the long run. He’s stayed at Duke for 3 seasons and he has a ton of skills. His handles are incredible for a big man.
2. Duke’s offense looks well practiced. They’ve dismantled Cal’s defense by playing angles that Cal hasn’t seen all year.
I Hope Our Team Is Watching
Duke is outclassing Cal with a very methodical and patient offense. And a very tight man to man defense.
yup
I made the same point re: Singler vs Love a while back – I love what Love brought to UCLA for a year, but Singler would probably have played ahead of ND last year and would have been the best player on this year’s team. Smart, skilled player who wants to learn.
by britishbruin on Mar 21, 2010 3:58 PM PDT up reply actions
also
really liked this Singler quote from wikipedia at the end of freshman season
After Duke lost to West Virginia in the second round of the 2008 NCAA Tournament, Singler put to rest any speculation that he may enter the 2008 NBA Draft saying
“I didn’t give the NBA any thought, I know I’m not ready. I need to mature both physically and mentally. I want to get stronger and quicker, and I want to work on learning how to play the game. I’m at a great place for that."
That is one of the kinds of player we need to recruit.
by britishbruin on Mar 21, 2010 4:01 PM PDT up reply actions
He wanted to be a Bruin
But his father didn’t want him playing in Kevin Love’s shadow anymore. Singler won state titles in Oregon but was never state POY with Love around. If they both came to UCLA I think Singler would already be in the NBA. There’s just too much temptation and big sports business in L.A. for a kid to remain an amateur athlete. Maybe that’s the hardest part of Coach Howland’s job.
Totally Agree
Singler and Roll would have been an incredible combo. It could have made the difference in Roll’s future prospects.
I just logged in to post the same thing
KL was unique and a great kid. But, Singler would have had a much greater impact on the team.
sjh
the only thing is
we probably don’t go to the Final Four with Singler but without KLove that year; Singler elevates last year’s team, but probably not to NC level; he elevates this year’s team, but maybe only to an early round tourney exit. Overall bigger impact, but (I think) it would have lessened the chances of our best team winning banner 12…
by britishbruin on Mar 21, 2010 4:17 PM PDT up reply actions
Well we're definitely Monday Morning QB's
But 2008’s team of DC, JS, and AA would have been vastly better with Singler. Plus we wouldn’t have wasted LMR’s senior year; which was a sad travesty.
sure
the 2008 team would have been better, but not a NC contender IMHO.
Sr DC and So Singler could have been solid players for a NC team, but JH wasn’t ready, JS was a shadow of his former potential, and PAA was a solid but not great college center….
by britishbruin on Mar 21, 2010 4:25 PM PDT up reply actions
To win in the tourney you need 5 solid pro prospects
5 professional quality basketball players.
5 guys who play well on both sides of the court. Some may be better offensively or defensively but all are specialists and have no massive holes in their game.
2008 would have been loaded with Singler and without Holiday.
who are the 5 solid pro prospects?
starting 5 in 2008 was DC, JH, JS, ND, PAA;
trading JH for KS adds a bit of quality, but still only 2 NBA players in the starting 5…
by britishbruin on Mar 21, 2010 4:44 PM PDT up reply actions
They don't have to be NBA but it doesn't hurt
Teams have won with two studs before.
sure
Just think that calling that team -with Singler for JH – ‘loaded’ is a stretch – our 2007 team had 4 NBA players in the starting 5, our 2006 team had 3, and the starting five in the NC game of 2005 have all now played in the NBA.
by britishbruin on Mar 21, 2010 5:05 PM PDT up reply actions
Cal is being embarrassed
Boykin is so frustrated with Duke’s length that his playing too fast; jumping on passes and forcing it way too much. (It reminds me of watching ML at the point.) Duke is very impressive; they’re literally outclassing Cal in every facet of the game. I don’t even think Duke is that athletic; they’re just very long and play excellent position defense.
On offense Duke’s players are playing with their head up, always looking for the next pass. They dribble the ball fundamentally well, nice and low. It’s keeping Cal from reaching in and pressuring the ball. They’re running 30 seconds off the shot clock every possession and running Cal all over the floor; completely tiring them out. With almost every possession leading to an easy bucket or a bad looking foul by Cal.
I’m impressed. I don’t think Drag would even get why Duke is winning watching this; his basketball IQ is that low. In fact, to expound on this, I suspect Drago’s basketball IQ is so low that mentally challenged basketball players in the Special Olympics are making smarter plays.

It’s a tough job, but you can toss Lunardi or one of the other 10 bracket guys in there and they’d have done a solid job this year. I think the selection committee really missed the boat, which sucks because DG headed it up.
