Josh Smith Headed To 2010 USA Basketball Men's U18 Team Training Camp
Interesting note from the official What's Bruin Blog:
High school basketball standout Josh Smith, who signed a letter of intent in November to attend UCLA, is one of 21 players who have accepted invitations to attend the 2010 USA Men's Basketball U18 National Team training camp.
The camp is scheduled for June 14-16 at University of Texas - San Antonio. Twelve players whill be selected for the team that will represent the USA at the FIBA Americas U18 Championship.
Hopefully participating in this will help Josh's effort to get in shape this off-season. On the other hand we also need to hope that Josh stays healthy through all his off-season basketball related camps and tournaments.
It was encouraging to hear earlier that he was going to work out with KL this summer in Westwood. Hopefully KL's workout plans can also incorporate some of the other current Bruins in the program, who are in desperate need of getting in better shape and become stronger this coming season.
GO BRUINS.

Anyone else see the irony of
KL leading conditioning classes?
Actually, I think it is very cool that he’s helping out our kids.
It really validates CBH’s concerns that KL came to school out of shape and the importance of conditioning to success.
KL is all the bigger man for acknowledging this, now.
I hope he gives Bobo a chance to participate.

Sounds good
and it’s good he’s going, I just hope he doesn’t get injured. Drew Gordon got hurt when he went to play for this team, but any time you play basketball you’re risking injury.

Well I believe MM was on the US team as well
and with a year for him to get stronger and improve his show now, I think he can have a nice year for us so there’s a positive to come from the US team hopefully.

Nice to see that he's wanted by an elite program
and that he’ll be playing and not eating burritos at home.
I keep hearing two different takes on Josh
#1: He’s a one-and-done level talent who will be putting up a Love-esque stat line for us his freshman year (a virtual lock for an 18-10 every game, in other words).
#2: He’s an out-of-shape plodder who’ll get his points in the paint, but will suffer in the rebounding and defense categories because of his weight (and, therefore, immobility).
Which is closer to the truth?
Truthfully, until it's proven otherwise, I'd go for your #2 take on Josh Smith.
This really is a reverse notion on the legal concept that presumes innocence until proven guilty. After what we saw in recruiting the last two seasons or so, this is a safer route lest we’d be left bewildered, jaws dropped, unable to say anything.
Rebuttable Presumption
Fact = Recent Recruit
Presumption = Won’t be as good as advertised
Burdens of Going Forward and Persuasion = On coaching staff to rebut the presumption by Smith playing well
I love the logic (?) of the law

Burdens and presumptions and all that was my weak area (or more accurately, one of my weak areas)
I kind of like the presumption that UCLA will always have a great basketball team. I think Walton referred to that concept as “returning balance to the universe” or something like that.
always expect the worst
that way, you can only ever be pleasantly surprised.

Yup ! I expect our program to continue its struggles this fall
Smith turns out to be the second coming of Michael Fey, Lamb replicates Bozeman’s mediocrity and Jones actually dribbles worse than Anderson. I hope this is nightmarish enough to appreciate any slightest kind of improvement, perhaps a five point preseason victory against Cal State East Bay, another two point over time victory against Mount San Antonio College.
We really have to wait and see, honestly speaking. Action speaks louder than words.
Bozeman was not mediocre under Howland
I think a lot will depend on the “attitude” these new players bring with them. If they feel “entitled” we are in for more of the same. If they buy in and work hard, they have the talent to help the program.
sjh
But Bozeman was not point
on a good CBH team. He was a good forward not a good PG. I think there is enough talent on this team to be good in PAC 10, IF we have a PG. However, no PG and our struggles will continue. ML is a good 2. TH is a potentially great 3, RN, if he plays defense, is a very good 4, even if Smith does not pan out well I think we can survive center by committee. But we can’t survive another year without a PG.
That's strictly Howland's call - point guard or no guard point
The program is his to make or break. At this point, everything needed said is already said, ad nauseum. We’ll find out this November Howland’s game plan.
