Around SBN: Trent Richardson Interviews Fellow Brown Brandon Weeden

The show is called Southland. One of the huge focus of this show (TNT) is a university called "SULA" which is in a certain neighborhood. In this particular episode it is around the murder of a woman named "Nicole" who is track star at the University. She was murdered. She was dating the University's star line backer "Tyler Prescott." Assault charges were filed against him but the charges were dropped. Just watch the episode (linked above). I am pretty sure it will get you curious enough to track all the other shows on TNT.

Its a great show

Have the last two weeks recorded on DVR but have not watched them yet. I couldn’t believe it got taken off network television after just one season. It is not one of those shows that you miss one episode and you have no idea what is going on. Anyone can start watching it and pick everything up right away

Agree Completely

Shows like this are essentially vehicles for characters and Southland has a great set of characters. They are complex, diverse, compelling and somewhat unpredictable.

The story lines are strong and lifelike — the good guys don’t always win, life’s not always fair and heroes aren’t always heroes.

I cast an Emmy ballot for the show — shows how much I don’t know. It was gone before it could build a following.

I’m surprised the network didn’t give it a longer shot. IIRC — Hill Street Blues struggled to find its place; but when it did it established a new genre.

Southland is very much in that mold.

Are they showing “new” episodes on TNT or simply rerunning the originals?

No idea if they are "new" episodes

Honestly don’t watch a lot of TV these days except for pure sports, classic/neo-classic movies, some news shows, CSPAN, food network, Comedy Central, and SNL. I didn’t know about this until a reader emailed couple of days ago.

I'm surprised that I'm getting into the Tournament

I was so upset that we were not in it that I didn’t think I’d watch.

But, I’m getting sucked in.

I now realize that when we are in the tournament, I feel some pressure. It’s actually much more relaxed now and, in some ways fun.

One thing is clear — we don’t belong in that tournament. I don’t have a feeling “gee we could have won this game” or “we are better than they are”.

Watching teams play consistent hard nosed basketball makes clear why we are not there.

Great D is winning games. So is discipline. And, making FT’s.

And, more than once, a coach has pulled a starter to taking an ill advised shot.

Our body of work — coaches and players — can’t match that of the teams in play.

Another thing that's easy to notice

whenever you see glimpses of these tourney. Note how big and strong the tourney teams look compared to our guys. The comparison is kind of stunning and also said because I never thought a Ben Howland coached team would look so weak and out of shape as a team.

NBC had to open up that 10pm slot for Leno somehow...

I believe these are new episodes that TNT has agreed to pick up.

Californication

I’ve been catching up with the most recent season of Californication, and I’ve been enjoying all the UCLA shots.

Channel Guide

On the chanel guide for this episode it listed U$C as the school, not SULA which I thought was great. I just checked the episode guide on TNT’s web site and here is the first line:

Lydia and Rene arrive in Compton, where a young USC student was murdered.

Here is the link:
http://www.tnt.tv/series/southland/episodeguide.jsp?seasonId=56054&episodeId=56439

Do you think the writer of the capsule preview just assumed it was U$C?

Totally forgot to note that

I thought that USC mention was pretty amusing (and telling).

I'm a Southland regular

So, to answer some questions above, NBC dumped it to free up spot for the aborted Leno at 10 p.m. experiment, and TNT ended up picking the show up, and yes, they are running new episodes on TNT, including the one with “SULA.”

Anyway, it was an okay episode, despite the fact they were blatantly trying not to make “SULA” too close to either UCLA or U$C. They basically just mixed and matched parts (this way no one can be pissed at their school being made to look bad).

“SULA” is located in South Central, but if you watch, you’re going to recognize the campus: it was filmed at UCLA.

“SULA” is short for the State University of Los Angeles, and their logo looks a lot like the UCLA script. Yet, they have an elite football team with questionable academic standard and integrity.

Star player on the squad isn’t living in his assigned dorm room, but a posh apartment with a very large plasma screen TV.

Just kind of amusing. I’m also guessing both UCLA and U$C wouldn’t sign on in letting TNT use either school’s name, given the way the school was portrayed (covering for the star football player while not giving a crap about the track athlete who developed a drug problem and got gunned down).

Yeah

I got the sense to be fair they structured the name in a way so that it would sound like UCLA and threw in the “state” school part. Yet it was clear in terms of culture which school was it based on. lol Have you seen multiple episodes? Guess I am really curious now to find out who wrote these stories.

sc Named Directly in Comcast's On Demand Synopsis

Not too hidden when they ID the show as the death of an sc athlete.

This show was clearly written by someone who knew all the buttons to push to touch sc scandals. I should really go back and see if the writing team included a Bruin.

Speaking of UCLA on screen

Anyone interested in classic movies should know that one of Humphrey Bogart’s best — some consider it his very best — mentions UCLA football. The movie is “In A Lonely Place,” and Bogart plays a violent, unstable screenwriter trying to restore his career, who gets accused of a murder. Great film.
