Around SBN: NFL Players Ready To Welcome Gay Teammate

March Madness, Friday Sweet 16 Open Thread

Yesterday, we got an upset and one of the better games you will ever see. Butler took down top-seeded Syracuse thanks to a late 11-0 run and advanced to their first Elite 8 in school history. In the second set of games, Xavier and Kansas St. played an epic double overtime thriller. The teams went back and forth all game. Players stepped up with huge shots and great hustle plays in one of the more entertaining games you will ever see before K-State finally pulled it out in the second extra session. If we can get a game that is even near as good as that one today, we're in great shape. Here's today's schedule, all times pacific.

  • (6) Tennessee vs. (2) Ohio St.- 4:07 pm
  • (10) St Mary's vs. (3) Baylor- 4:27 pm
  • (9) Northern Iowa vs. (5) Michigan St.- 6:37 pm
  • (4) Purdue vs. (1) Duke- 6:57 pm

With the 4 vs. 1 game the closest thing we have in seed difference, it's underdogs galore again. It could make for some great upsets. March Madness On-Demand has all the games online again and you can grab it in the widget below. More madness. More fun. More open thread. Have fun with it everyone.

Predictions:

Ohio State comfortably, Baylor in a close one, Northern Iowa in a thriller, Duke in a blowout. I picked Kansas to win it all, though, so don’t bet your next paycheck or anything on these.

I agree with you

though Tennessee sometimes plays up to competition; and I think it’s possible Izzo ekes out one more win before getting blown away by OSU in the Elite Eight. If I had to bet on it though, I’d take your picks.

Hope nobody took those bets

And thank God I don’t know a bookie; would have been having to sell my TV and laptop to pay off my gambling debts.

let's go St Mary's

Lowest seed still standing, California school taking on the Big 12

+1

Today, I met some St. Mary’s folks in a deli here in Houston.

Shook their hands and wished them well.

But, Baylor is dominating early on. I picked Baylor for Final Four. But, would love them to lose this game.

The domination

Just reinforces how overseeded villanova was as a 2- Baylor would have killed them, it seems.

The curse of living in Exile

I have to watch Baylor with a 30 point lead and don’t get the last minutes of Ohio State/Tenn, as they see saw back and forth.

That is a crying shame

Osu Tennessee finish was fantastic.

What chance izzo gets msu to Final Four with osu gone??

Izzo is a very solid coach

But, as we are seeing N. Iowa is tough

I hate Duke and the Rat

Come on Purdue, stay with them and break their hearts with a last minute win.

I almost wholeheartedly agree

But if gambling were legal I might be relying on duke to cover my losses…

And seriously

Who’s betting against izzo now vs Pearl? Not me.

It seems like

Michigan State is the new us; their teams the last couple of years have been in the mold of “whole is greater than the sum of the parts,” they play great defense, don’t show off or mouth off, have a great coach and a great tradition, and unfortunately look like they’re headed for a similar fate as the original Ben Ball Warriors (consecutive Final Fours without a title). Just a random opinion, of course, but you’ve got to admit that there a lot of similarities.

Ummm

Michigan St. has been doing this under Tom Izzo for well over a decade now. If anything we were trying to be the new Michigan St. and unlike us, the Spartans picked up a national title.

D'oh

My bad. Will do more research next time. (Amazing, though, that a background check of Izzo reveals that he’s been to five Final Fours and eight Sweet Sixteens since 1996, with a national title under his belt as well…and I had barely even heard of him before last year’s title game. If only he coached in the Big East or Big 12; ESPN might have already pulled the same ignorant crap they did with Coach K and compared him to Wooden.)

you're right and wrong

in fairness, the talking heads regularly say things like “I can’t go against Tom Izzo” and give him due deference as being as good as anyone in the game. But it is true that he is not front and center the way Williams, Coach K, Calipari et al are, partly on account of his style (not so much TV value in MSU), partly because MSU plays in the Big 10, partly because the teams they should be rivals with (OSU who have a consistently good basketball program; or Michigan, who are their in-state rival) have their own rivalry which is more important. Same would happen if NC-State got good – they would still play second fiddle to the Duke-UNC rivalry.
