"We have to win eight. I'll be crushed if we don't win eight. How do you win eight? You win every one you line up."

My favorite part of that was:
You have to continually be re-working the puzzle. It doesn’t ever end. Those magical years where it looks like it’s completed, you just enjoy those, because pretty soon it’s going to splinter again. Brian Price going early… Do you have to anticipate that? Sure. You anticipate all of it.
I love this quote
During KD’s reign of error, I always wondered if he was as upset as I was at his losses and the downward spiral he was creating. I think the answer was, sadly, “no”. With CRN, I know that he understands the true potential of the sleeping giant in Westwood and he’ll be damned if it doesn’t wake up and wreak havoc on the west coast.
Of course, CRN says "eight or more" but Gold's header for it says...
“Eight is enough.”
Tone is everything, people.

8 sounds great,
but we have a pretty tough schedule. I wonder where those 8 wins will come from.
doesn't matter
You don’t worry about penciling in wins and losses ahead of time. not sure that’s what you meant, but just sayin. Neuheisel said it himself, and I really liked this bit: “We can do that, if we get all hands on deck, because there is nothing given to us in this schedule. Nothing. Nothing. There is nothing out there where you can write down and say, ‘OK, we’ve got that one.’ That’s not the way it is. And that’s not true of most colleges. Most colleges can tell you right now they’ve got some wins scheduled in there.”
It’s not about where you find the wins. You go take the wins.

"Itβs not about where you find the wins. You go take the wins."
I don’t know if Captain Leebeard said this or Coach Neuheisel said it, but it’s true and I like the attitude. I think with Donahue, for example, and with CTS, there were games that they expected we would lose and did nothing about it. Coach Prothro lost to number 1 MSU in 1965, then beat then on New Years Day in the Rose Bowl. Coach Vermeil lost to number 1 Ohio State during the season in 1975, then beat them in the Rose Bowl on New Years Day. Coach Prothro and Coach Vermeil went out and took the wins. They didn’t go out there expecting to lose. That’s what I want to see with Coach Neuheisel’s teams. I see it with the Coach – now he’s got to get that message through to his guys.
Love the bravado.
Now go out there and hit someone!

I remember back in the early days of 7 weeks ago, saying that “to maintain the momentum of the program, an 8-4 season has to be the floor” would be the sort of thing that would touch off a firestorm about unrealistic expectations, challenges about which 8 games were guaranteed wins, etc.
Sounds like CRN agrees with S Jay Bruin… not only will less than 8 wins fail to maintain the momentum of the program, CRN will be crushed not to get there. Here’s hoping they both get what they want! Go Bruins!
Rick Neuheisel can set his expectations ...
We will set ours in due time. For us it is more important to get a winning record in the Pac-10 conference then worrying about 8 wins. 8 wins will not mean as much if it entails a losing season in the conference.
I completely agree but
assuming we didn’t have a winning Pac-10 record (4-5) that would mean that we won every single out-of-conference game, which means wins against Kansas St., Houston, and Texas, and a bowl game win, which would be pretty cool. Despite that though, I agree. We need to start demonstrating that we can compete in the Pac-10 conference.
Yeah
It will be a matter of context. Let’s say we win 9-10 games only to get blown out in two of last three regular season games (giving up almost 60 points in each of those losses) … it’s all a matter of context.
We will definitely have to improve on this past season in terms of hard numbers. Just as important is how we get to that point.
Agreed
we were one dropped pick-6 away from a 8 win season last year. I don’t think anyone will be satisfied with a duplication of last season. Not all 8 win seasons are created alike. Clear cut improvement across the board should be the goal.

We're probably
better this year, but so is our competition. 8 wins will be a challenge.
Honestly, my goals for next season really only involve on W.
And that is against Hated South Central.
We absolutely have to smash them in the mouth for last year, and then go for two so we can get Tame Kitten to utter, “what’s your deal? what’s your deal?”

I wish Rick didn't put "8" out there.
If we’re really good, and/or have some nice, unexpected surprises (Prince may have a great year) and run up 6 in a row off the bat… or 6 out of 7 off the bat… then “8” will be the number out in space as the target number. Potential let down, due to human nature. I’d much rather Rick repeat the matra that his goal is bring us our first “Perfect” season… one Saturday at a time. This way, we’re always striving, fighting… and perhaps end most seasons in the BCS hunt. For me, when Saturdays roll around, I always think we’re “in it” prior to kick-off. I’m a fan and very proud alum. I’m no analyst. Go Bruins!
I think Neuheisel already agrees with you.
“It’s about being good enough. Being good enough to get it done. No more excuses as to why we didn’t. There’s no youth excuse, there’s no any excuse. We have to find a way to get it done.”
