Lavin to interview with St. Johns...
Sports Illustrated online reports a source saying the Undertaker will interview with SJ. Here is transcript from his prep mock interview:
Q: How did you contribute to the 1995 national championship?
A: Well, I made sure to get into the camera shots on a regular basis.
Q: How do Baron Davis and Matt Barnes feel about your coaching?
A: They frequently drop my name to their peers.
Q: How do you compare as a coach to Ben Howland?
A: I left him super talent and an outstanding defensive system, and he couldn't make the postseason.
Q: Are you a better recruiter than he is?
A: Well, he got Afflalo, Farmar, Mbah a Moute, Westbrook, Love, Holliday, Honeycutt, Nelson. And I got, um, lots of stars.
Q: You are good friends with Coach Wooden?
A: Absolutely, I sweet talked him into participating at my wedding ceremony, well when there was one.
Q: What is your greatest strength?
A: My game analysis. I mean, I just proved on TV that I know more than Tom Izzo.
Q: What is the secret to your success?
A: My hair treatment.

This has got to be a leverage ploy to boost his pay with tWWL.
I can’t accept the notion that CHP is stupid enough to leave an easy job where he’s deemed an “expert” and go to a job where his total absence of talent would make itself apparent after about a week and a half. On the other hand, he is remarkably stupid. Maybe he really thinks he knows basketball. After all, he’s smarter than Izzo.
If one has a large ego, one doesn't perceive oneself objectively.
My guess is he really thinks he can be a successful head coach, that he truly believes he did well at UCLA, and that his subsequent years of analysis have made him even more capable than before. (The alternative theory, as you point out, is that he knows he was extremely lucky to get the job at UCLA and to keep it for some time, despite lack of qualifications, that his next position would likely not go so well, and that he ought to push for more money from his TV employer.)
