John Wooden was an unbelievably successful man coaching any kind of team. He’s probably one of the most unique men I’ve ever been around in my life. I’ve never been around someone that I have as much respect for as John Wooden. He is the salt of the earth, the brightest man I’ve ever been around in terms of knowledge of everything. His memory is just remarkable and I think over the years as a lot of people have who have interacted with him, I have such tremendous respect for him that I can’t even tell you.
Hall of Famer Jerry West on the Dan Patrick Show, talking about John Wooden. He also speaks about Lew Alcindor/Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in the interview. If you keep listening, there is also a combative interview with former USC coach Tim Floyd. The West segment is several minutes into the segment.

Between John Wooden, Jerry West, and Kareem
I have this overpowering urge to drop into a We’re-not-worthy deference. So, it’s good to mix in a little Tim Floyd vinegar, as it makes me appreciate these three all the more.
For all the accolades, all the praise
we will never appreciate Coach as much as he deserves. Men like this happen once in a century.

When I heard Coach speak,
I felt like I was walking on clouds afterward. I felt like anything was possible. Then I reflected on the fact that his players got to hear him every day. Unbelievable.
The best thing you can do for your children is to love their mother. John Wooden
