Center Court: UCLA Basketball (@ Arizona) Open Thread
UCLA Bruins at Arizona Wildcats, Mar 4, 2010 7:30 PM PST
Just two more games to go till the 2009-10 regular season comes to a merciful end. Bruins (13-15, 8-8) wind down the dreadful year with two games against Arizona schools starting with the Arizona Wildcats (14-14, 8-8) tonight. Two quick notes if you haven't seen it via our Twitter feed or comment threads yet: 1) Reeves Nelson will not be available tonight (in fact he is not going to be available for the entire road trip). That's tough news but we can't screw around with Nelson's eye considering he just had surgery. 2) News came out this afternoon that Bobo was suspended for missing a meeting. Really, there is nothing else to say at this point.
This is the 80th meeting between UCLA and Arizona with the Bruins leading the series 46-33 (.582). UCLA is 14-19 (.424) all-time in games at Arizona and has won three of the last four in Tucson, Ariz. The Bruins lost last year's matchup 84-72 in the McKale Center. Ben Howland is 8-7 all-time against Arizona. Howland also has a 6-1 record on Thursdays (he has always done well on Thursdays). However, not sure how much that record is going to mean tonight as I stated earlier today since the mid 80s Bruins have never won in Arizona during a year they didn't win the Pac-10 title.
The game will be televised live on FSN and is scheduled for a 7:36 p.m. (PT) tip-off. You can read up on all of our musings leading up to this game here. If you want to follow the game online you can do so via our official site. As always, we will be here in the game threads with our rapid fire takes and commentary. So let's get this party started. Fire away.
GO BRUINS.

This is a game
where we are so short handed and our expectations are so low that we should just come out and play for the fun of it.
That may be what we need. No fear of getting yanked for mistakes — there are not enough people on the bench to pull people quickly.
sjh
Go Devils...beat the Trogans!
50-47 3 min left
My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing $C.
oooo....
fouling a man behind the arc. Big mental mistake by $C
My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing $C.
Lets go Lane
hoping BL gets time to prove himself tonight. GO BRUINS
I guess being cleared wasn't enough?
maybe they want to make sure he’s okay for the tournament.
Go Bruins!
Thanks Longtime
They are covering the game on TV on a lot of the East Coast but it is so cool you do this.
offensive goaltending
hanging on the rim when his teammate’s shot was going to fall…
it's all relative
that may have been one of the worst plays in a franchise of bad plays
wow
and then fouled when Glasser had picked up his dribble inside his half and against the sideline and was doubleteamed. Ugly.
The trogans are idiots.
1st foul before inbound, then offensive rebounding. “He wasn’t thinking”…dah!
Go Bruins!
which should be soon
ASU shooting FTs up 3 with less than 5 on the clock
Who is this announcer?
“The players have got to be able to think for himself” come on…they can’t
Go Bruins!
BL needs to gain someweight
then if he goes up with two hands, he won’t get stuffed like that
He is looking good.

Well finally
The game plan in part seems to be make ND score down low. Let’s see how long ND stays down low. Hopefully not many three attempts tonight. (I know, snicker away.) ND needs to be our inside scorer tonight.
Just got in
Score looks good so far. If the first 5 minutes were critical for the post game wrap, let me know.
formerly bruinhoo
ND scored 6 point inside
SO he went outside to shoot a 26 footer
he figures
that if he doesn’t shoot again this season he’ll probably end with a better 3pt% than ND…
fwiw
that’s about the third bad pass / turnover from TH early. Not quite on his game yet.
TH likes to throw a lot of no look passes
A lot of the time his teammates don’t seem to be expecting him to pass it to him. Don’t know if that should be a knock on his unselfishness or on the team chemistry but they need to work on learning each other’s tendencies in practice
For the record
CBH DID take ND out for his 26 footer. Hopefully ND will go back down low
unclear
looks like we’re running a 6 man rotation and having to move people around… and so saying, Moser into the game??
great hustle by JA after a stupid turnover
to get back and give up the and-one foul
[Slaps head]
Yeah
P – I think you can write up the post game thread during half time.
I starting to doze off watching this.
It should be an entertaining one
If for no reason but today’s timeline: pro bono > happy hour w/the girl > dinner/drinks w/parents > home, with teh team encouraging me to finish this bottle of sake in the fridge.
formerly bruinhoo
full upper-body
maybe for streamlining purposes hustling up and down the floor
Nope not in his top 5 this year
He has done it that much
haha good point
i just knew he was going to give up the ball when he was dribbling down the court
he tried to take a charge
was called a block
close play
by insomniacslounge on Mar 4, 2010 8:00 PM PST up reply actions
had time to watch the JA turnover
maybe he didn’t sprint back quickly enough → quick hook
ND went back down low
And he misses the shot but we score that possession. For us to have any chance tonight he has to be down low
think we may have got away with one there
thought ML had his foot on the line
No threes except by MR and we need to score down low
to have a chance.
looks like we actually have a gameplan to go inside as much as possible
but we aren’t finishing (ND and BL particularly so far)
Yep but Disagree on ND
He has six points inside. BL is too slow. ML can make the shot BL missed some open ones because he was too slow. He is going to get his points on rebounds and garbage.
has made the easy ones
had missed most of those that involved trying to use post moves. But I agree on the premise.
Perhaps we've just seen the last substantial PT for JA?
I’m hoping CBH gave him one last chance to prove himself before asking him to transfer
UCLA Football, please make the switch to black cleats
Sad as it sounds, we are really going to need him next year
If nothing else but for depth. At best, we are going to have 4 guards for 2 spots – Jones/JA at the point, and Lee/Lamb at the 2.

this week, someone on the thread commented on the asst coach behavior on the bench
he said they were all playing mini-coaches
I just watched them on our last series and it seems to be true
2guys screaming, yelling and waiving their arms like the lizzard used to to
sjh
The last one was JA's fault
Passed into TH’s shin
UCLA Football, please make the switch to black cleats
He has been sneaky with the TO's
4 in the first half is a bit much for him, but he has been turning the ball over a bit lately
formerly bruinhoo
MR is playing hard as he has all season
he gets more out of less while those with more give little
sjh
Like the offense so far
We are not settling for 3s (except for MR which is good) and except for a couple dumb 3 shots by ND, have taken good shots.
too much enthusiasm on help defense
he looks like he has been caged all season
It's one thing to play a long note to irritate the other team
It’s another to ruin the experience for everyone
Moser and his quick fouls
People should go back and look up PAA and LMR’s game from their first seasons – fouling machines. Not a strike against him. It means he is in there, mixing it up.
he did well to be in position to make the foul
and he prevented an easy basket. No question.
it's true
it’s actually surprising how TH and RN pick up cheap fouls rather than shot-preventing fouls; most of Drago’s foul’s are failed flop attempts.
Yup
what do you expect for a FR averaging 5 minutes a game. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/teams/stats?teamId=26

So
why was Nelson cleared today and now he is out for both games? Something changed I guess! That’s a bummer. :(

That's smart
Shouldn’t mess with your eyes. Not worth it.
"The entire world that bleeds blue and gold ... they have been dying for this." - Coach Rick Neuheisel
I don't get this...
MAH is a better ball handler, defender, shooter and plays smart. Why is JA playing ahead of him?
UCLA Football, please make the switch to black cleats
great defensive trick
ND makes him think it’s an easy layup, before TH swoops in for the block!
Sadly, it ain't just N blowing smoke
I’ve been secretly scaring myself to death over the slight possibility of that, but is seems slightly more likely…
formerly bruinhoo
what has changed?
a few weeks ago, people were saying TH would still be around for 2nd year, what has changed between then and now? Doesn’t he need to build weight after his injury in the beginning?
Hopefully this chatter will not amount to anything
Just hearing but nothing of substance. But don’t be shocked if it is something we have think about this off season.
it's the silver lining
in his turnovers… maybe someone can say “there’s a kid who can build himself up, become more consistent, and be a high pick”
Roll
is playing great!
"The entire world that bleeds blue and gold ... they have been dying for this." - Coach Rick Neuheisel
Again - can someone tell me - why Howland didn't try zone?
In the game at Pauley against these guys and against SuC?
didn't have access to wikipedia
to check out what ‘zone’ meant in the context of basketball?
maybe onto something with Assistants
perhaps his assistants have a whole system set of shouting and waving madly that is man-to-man specific, and he needed time to retrain them
Nice
Dumb foul by Hill, momentum into the second for us.
Oh UCLA you sweet bitch, you've BRUINed me for anything else.

Zona stunned
We’re not playing that great and still beating them. Wildcat youth is hurting them tonight.
UCLA Football, please make the switch to black cleats
We need to keep this up
and win tonight. We all know how we are on Saturdays and we need to at least split this road trip. I like what I am seeing from MR, ML and TH.
"The entire world that bleeds blue and gold ... they have been dying for this." - Coach Rick Neuheisel
BTW ... speaking of youth "development"
Rye is watching this game from a bar. Think about this. When we started blogging on BN, rye wasn’t old enough to drink!
LOL
Hell, when this season started, he wasn’t old enough to drink.
This season has had an aging effect on us all!
formerly bruinhoo
We are playing smart
We are winning without TH have a good game on offense because we are going inside to score. Except for ND’s 3 attempts and one bad shot by ML we are playing smart and taking advantage of a bad defensive team. Even our misses (like those by BL) are good shots generally. CBH game planned well.
Strength
He needs to get stronger. He gets inside and gets blocked A LOT. He needs to bulk up and go strong to the hole. I see a lot of potential there.
"The entire world that bleeds blue and gold ... they have been dying for this." - Coach Rick Neuheisel
Agree to both
But he is the best we got and as 66 says he is trying. Hustling works for rebounds and we don’t need him to score. Just play D and rebound is what we need from him.
I think his technique looks pretty solid
and his positioning seems to have improved over the season. If he was playing the 4 today I don’t think his physical presence would look so lacking.
I think he is in the right place and trying hard. Not strong enough for the inside game
2 rebounds 1 block but got stuffed on one shot and missed another he should have taken stronger to the hole
Overall, I think he has great potential
sjh
It's temporary
He is a FR who will fill out under a college weight program and diet. He’ll be a Ryan Anderson without as much range in a couple of years.
On Minutes
CBH did bench ND for his first three point bomb.
BL only played 11 minutes because of 2 fouls. His playing time will be limited by fouls.
JA is trying on defense which is better than not but I am still not sure who is worse him or ND.
My only question is why not a little more MAH.
I am mixed on that but good point
I think he would have played more if TH got his second foul. Also MR has been able to rebound tonight so we have not needed him as much
But like his effort.
We need to be barn cats at the start of the second half
if we go soft and give up our lead I’ll shit
sjh
That Barn Cat Mojo hasn't worked for us ...
This year’s team just doesn’t have any barn cat in them..
Perhaps
he had a talk with Coach Wooden and it stuck.
Oh UCLA you sweet bitch, you've BRUINed me for anything else.
with a hard drive to the basket
I mean, spinning fadeaway…
ND inside
an assist and FTs on last two plays. From 3 bricks.
i'm not sure we need bobo
we need a good center though
he is the best we have at this time -- he takes up space and can block
Th is a better blocker but he does it from all angles — not by clogging he middle
sjh
definitely takes up space
and is good at blocking if people go straight at him – but he hasn’t yet got the lateral quickness to cut people off at the pass…
flashy but not that effective
got beaten by the shot fake, then tried to make a spectacular block rather than just deflecting it and trying to take it away.
disagree
he was hustling to challenge the 3. Compare him to Rago who makes no effort to get out there to contest.
not comparing him to Rago
just think that was a play that looked better than it actually was
That is an interesting point
with too much truth to it. RN did not play D against Washington.
Lane is much longer.
Seeing good things from him.

Re. Honeycutt and fatigue
Clearing throat:
If the Bruins were to have any kind of shot today, we will need a big game from Honeycutt. It would also help if Howland made an effort to keep Honeycutt fresh, by using Mike Moser for 4-7 mins a game, using his athleticism and physical frame as an asset in our zone defense. Yet we can’t really count on it as Moser will be sitting on the bench and wondering what would have happened if he was playing with Derrick Williams and Momo Jones on the other end of the court.
Howland keeps letting Rag set the tone
By taking dumb shots and not benching him. Can’t get upset at other guys at this point.

Stop complaining about the refs guys
Don’t be bunch of losers complaining about SPTRs when it was our freaking coach … coached us out of the game. Don’t whine. It is pathetic.
should have kept attacking
the drinking got heavier as that went on, but I thought the turning point was ML going out for so long with lack of proper conditioning cramps. Then we started playing not to lose… and lost. Stopped trying to penetrate. Stopped going inside.
Agree a 100%
I think playing JA was the worst part. MAH would have slowed the bleeding.
Defintitely not the refs
They were not too bad. We got some calls this game as well. If you want where we lost it, it was when CBH put JA in over MAH when ML got hurt. If you want the play it was where ND missed the layup, maybe because he had not rested all game.
They did not cost us the game
but in all fairness to nd, who doesn’t deserve much, that was not an obvious or intentional foul. May not have been a foul at all.
Just because it was on nd does not make it an ok call
sjh
Don't care about the call
The game was lost in last few mins with Howland’s game management. For that play Drago cost us with double digit boneheaded plays tonight (like he does 90 percent of the time).
I agree with that
he had a terrible game.
And, as I mentioned in a thread this week — he puts other people in foul trouble because they have to stop his man when he Oles
sjh
Per the announcers
the refs have said all year any foul in a must-foul situation committed before the ball is inbounded is, by rule, an intentional foul. If indeed the announcers are correct, then ND’s foul was as epically stupid as it looked.
looked like pretty standard jostling to me
like you see on any inbounds play
I don't have cable. Is the box score right?

I'll always love the guy cause he looked me in the face
and shook my hand and congratulated me the day of my graduation.
But damn dude. He screwed the pooch on this one for sure.

It is not worth arguing who was JA or ND
The question is on why does CBH let them play that way.
Nestor's right
CBH gave this away with his stubbornness, he doesn’t learn
MM 4minutes and MAH got 6.
What a waste. We had guys dropping from exhaustion and fresh legs on the bench.
The "turnaround" project
Needs to start from Game 1 next season. No more favorites, all accountability.
It really showed with TH at the end of the game missing shots and ft's -- he was beat
nd was not, and he played the most minutes — which makes clear that he does not play hard.
MR — total warrior

Why would you be tired
When you rest on one end of the floor, and jack up perimeter shots instead of taking it inside?
why would he be tired if he shoots the moment he gets the ball?
He barely moves the ball.
seniors are typically better conditioned than freshmen
particularly when the freshman in question missed so much time with injury.
makint me edit my postgame, damnit
I thought I could write that Moser got more minutes than his average, from what I started at the 8-minute mark.
formerly bruinhoo
he did
if you average over the season rather than in the games played
MR did everything he could
I am going to bed. I really sorry for MR because he played his heart out again, to be let down by things outside his control.
I'm not one to get melodramatic
but I do feel a little ill for MR, TH, and MAH. I can feel their frustration.
UCLA Football, please make the switch to black cleats
Does this help our chances of playing in the 6-3 or 7-2 game?
Cal is the only team who I think is actually good, so I’d rather be in the other half.
let's rest ML from now until then
and we’ll be ok for one game.

and please, no nit
because we won’t use it to let young guys play and if we don’t I don’t want to go
I want this season over.

Words Can't Describe How Bad Tonight Was
Then again these Bruins shouldn’t win in Arizona.
