Center Court: UCLA Basketball (@ Arizona) Open Thread

UCLA Bruins at Arizona Wildcats, Mar 4, 2010 7:30 PM PST

Just two more games to go till the 2009-10 regular season comes to a merciful end. Bruins (13-15, 8-8) wind down the dreadful year with two games against Arizona schools starting with the Arizona Wildcats (14-14, 8-8) tonight. Two quick notes if you haven't seen it via our Twitter feed or comment threads yet: 1) Reeves Nelson will not be available tonight (in fact he is not going to be available for the entire road trip). That's tough news but we can't screw around with Nelson's eye considering he just had surgery. 2) News came out this afternoon that Bobo was suspended for missing a meeting. Really, there is nothing else to say at this point.

This is the 80th meeting between UCLA and Arizona with the Bruins leading the series 46-33 (.582). UCLA is 14-19 (.424) all-time in games at Arizona and has won three of the last four in Tucson, Ariz. The Bruins lost last year's matchup 84-72 in the McKale Center.  Ben Howland is 8-7 all-time against Arizona. Howland also has a 6-1 record on Thursdays (he has always done well on Thursdays). However, not sure how much that record is going to mean tonight as I stated earlier today since the mid 80s Bruins have never won in Arizona during a year they didn't win the Pac-10 title.

The game will be televised live on FSN and is scheduled for a 7:36 p.m. (PT) tip-off. You can read up on all of our musings leading up to this game here. If you want to follow the game online you can do so via our official site. As always, we will be here in the game threads with our rapid fire takes and commentary. So let's get this party started. Fire away.

GO BRUINS.

This is a game

where we are so short handed and our expectations are so low that we should just come out and play for the fun of it.

That may be what we need. No fear of getting yanked for mistakes — there are not enough people on the bench to pull people quickly.

The trogans are idiots.

1st foul before inbound, then offensive rebounding. “He wasn’t thinking”…dah!

Well finally

The game plan in part seems to be make ND score down low. Let’s see how long ND stays down low. Hopefully not many three attempts tonight. (I know, snicker away.) ND needs to be our inside scorer tonight.

that’s about the third bad pass / turnover from TH early. Not quite on his game yet.

by britishbruin on Mar 4, 2010 7:51 PM PST up reply actions

TH likes to throw a lot of no look passes

A lot of the time his teammates don’t seem to be expecting him to pass it to him. Don’t know if that should be a knock on his unselfishness or on the team chemistry but they need to work on learning each other’s tendencies in practice

by BigBru on Mar 4, 2010 7:54 PM PST up reply actions

TH is a bit off tonight, I think he has 3 turnovers

We are winning without TH have a good game on offense because we are going inside to score. Except for ND’s 3 attempts and one bad shot by ML we are playing smart and taking advantage of a bad defensive team. Even our misses (like those by BL) are good shots generally. CBH game planned well.

He needs to get stronger. He gets inside and gets blocked A LOT. He needs to bulk up and go strong to the hole. I see a lot of potential there.

Agree to both

But he is the best we got and as 66 says he is trying. Hustling works for rebounds and we don’t need him to score. Just play D and rebound is what we need from him.

Re. Honeycutt and fatigue

Clearing throat:

If the Bruins were to have any kind of shot today, we will need a big game from Honeycutt. It would also help if Howland made an effort to keep Honeycutt fresh, by using Mike Moser for 4-7 mins a game, using his athleticism and physical frame as an asset in our zone defense. Yet we can’t really count on it as Moser will be sitting on the bench and wondering what would have happened if he was playing with Derrick Williams and Momo Jones on the other end of the court.

by BlueReign on Mar 4, 2010 9:47 PM PST up reply actions

Defintitely not the refs

They were not too bad. We got some calls this game as well. If you want where we lost it, it was when CBH put JA in over MAH when ML got hurt. If you want the play it was where ND missed the layup, maybe because he had not rested all game.

by DCBruins on Mar 4, 2010 9:48 PM PST up reply actions

They did not cost us the game

but in all fairness to nd, who doesn’t deserve much, that was not an obvious or intentional foul. May not have been a foul at all.

Just because it was on nd does not make it an ok call

by Class of 66 on Mar 4, 2010 9:49 PM PST up reply actions

Don't care about the call

The game was lost in last few mins with Howland’s game management. For that play Drago cost us with double digit boneheaded plays tonight (like he does 90 percent of the time).

by Class of 66 on Mar 4, 2010 9:52 PM PST up reply actions

Per the announcers

the refs have said all year any foul in a must-foul situation committed before the ball is inbounded is, by rule, an intentional foul. If indeed the announcers are correct, then ND’s foul was as epically stupid as it looked.
