Center Court: UCLA Basketball (@ Arizona State) Open Thread
UCLA Bruins at Arizona St. Sun Devils, Mar 6, 2010 1:00 PM PST
Not a lot left to say at this point. UCLA Bruins (13-16, 8-9) finish up their regular season against Arizona State Sun Devils (21-9, 11-6) this afternoon in Tempe. The crowd at at Wells Fargo Arena should be fired up. The Devils will be looking for a victory on national TV inching them closer to the Big Dance and it will still give them a shot at tying for a conference championship. Plus it's their "Senior Day" which will add a whole another level of emotion honoring their unquestioned leader in Derek Glasser.
For the Bruins it will be another uphill battle with a decimated roster. We will get Bobo Morgan back who is coming back after one game suspension. It is unclear though whether he will get to contribute from the bench. While in terms of matchup we might have a shot in this game because our personnel has performed OK against the type of 1-3-1 zone ASU likes to play, for the Bruins to have any shot they will have to go at it for entire 40 minutes.
The game will be televised live on CBS and is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. (MT)/1:05 p.m. (PT) tip-off. You can read up on all of our musings leading up to this game here. If you want to follow the game online you can do so via our official site. As always, we will be here in the game threads with our rapid fire takes and commentary. So let's get this game thread started. Fire away.
GO BRUINS.

I hope to see the future today
all young’uns, with MR — relief minutes for MAH.
And, tolerable minutes for Ole!
sjh
There are great similarities, both in lack of experience and approach.
Both good guys. Bad leaders.

Spring has sprung in the south.
I was outside pruning trees, until the spousal unit called me in for the game. At least I get to celebrate no more yard work today.

absolutely spectacular in Houston
If we are lucky, we’ll get a couple of weeks of this before it gets hot

game barely started and its already painful watching rago
seriously, does he not know that offense is going to try and go around him?
and that he’s supposed to stop them?
We are playing M2M, thoughts?
And they are stilling hitting 3s
Us getting blown out
would be a more than fitting way for this season to end. MR just needs to shoot it every time he touches it so at least he can go out strong.
Jesus why do we play so awful on sat on CBS. I just want this year to be over.

Here’s my deal. When you pull a good player out early to send him a message, you’ve gotta have faith that he’s smart enough to receive that message. Drago has never proven that he’s smart enough for anything. He will, I repeat he will, continue to jack up shots.
He gets the bizarro world message. “Thanks for getting good position, and scoring within the offense. Now watch the next ten minutes of the game as Drago jacks up a shot from fifty feet away.”

Why are we playing man!?
MR is trying to cover, and ND is all over the damn court.
My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing $C.
So Bobo makes a good play on offense
and a good play on defense, so CBH takes him out. Why do we even bother? Now Boateng can have his way.
I am going to write my post game thread during half time
I want to be positive. I will writer about Bobo and celebrate end of the regular season. Any other ideas?
maybe start a count-down timer til Drago never gets to see another basketball court?

It’s nice to remember we have a bunch of winning teams at Westwood.
Very sad for me.
for more than half the season I was one of CBH’s strongest defenders. Even argued there was little alternative for playng Ole.
But, there is no way to not see what a terrible coaching job he is doing, and that’s really sad.
I try to see the bright side. It is missing.
Pulling Bobo when he did — just makes me sick

Bobo had the easier 2 points we’ve made plus took a charge… Made no sense pulling him.

Of course we went back to M2M and got a stop just now

I don't like bitching about refs but
ND and ML were both fouled. They felt guilty and gave us the ball even though it went off ML.
Me neither
and it is by no way their fault that we are losing, but really!? We have been to the line only 2 times and I saw MANY more fouls. SPTR.

54-42, 6 minutes-plus to go.
I'm listening on my laptop

No he played man some then as well
But it is good logic. Also, Bobo did okay against ASU big guy 1 on 1

Nestor. I mean it.
We have to get some sort of Dragovich countdown. Think about it. This could be good. We could have the countdown to his last game…………with a big picture of him on the screen. The closer we get to him being gone, the more and more the picture disappears, to the point that when his last game is over, their is just a blank screen with maybe his stupid looking goatee and socks are all that is left on the screen. It could be good.
can that asshole go one possession without doing anything negative?
He is plain crap!! Just crap

62-55 now
1:18 to go for the women’s eighth straight win!
Guys - still working on the post game thread
Here is the line I have so far:
Otherwise, there is really not much to say. I don’t feel like providing any observations concerning Nikola Dragovic, Jerime Anderson and the minutes they got today despite giving their "usual effort" on the basketball court. Yeah, Dragovic showed little signs of life with 2 back to back 3s in the second half, but by that point it was somewhat moot given his overall body of work (on both ends of the court) for the entire game (and rest of this season).
Put up the final score of the Women's game instead :-)
Just to give everyone hope if only for a second.
Also it really doesn't matter what you write
because win or lose our feelings about this game and our season will not change.
The women are awesome!
I have seen them twice this year, and they play their butts off. Also, Coach Caldwell is a great coach, tough, and easy on the eyes.

walking the ball over halfcourt down 8.
I Love Spiro
He calls out a bad shot by saying ‘Dragovic’ feeling confident. End result: Brick and fast break the other way
Disagree on that play he did
But Bobo stopped him a couple times
Boateng's a senior
and a transfer from Duke.
The difference is Sendek brought him along, and now he’s playing well. Bobo’s been thrust in the Lion’s Den after not playing all year.
Tough play by TH and ML

Bobo and BL
The bad, BL gets out muscled easily. Bobo is soft and stops too soon.
The good, BL hustles, Bobo is a big body and shows flashes of knowing how to use it.
BL the frosh will get stronger
less clear if JMM the soph will improve his softness problem…

Someone please tell me ...
why Mike Moser didn’t redshirt?
Was there any reason to burn his redshirt?
We just wasted a whole year of eligibility ...
for no reason at all. He barely played and he made zero impact.
maybe CBH didn't know whether he, or BL, or JMM, or TH, or RN
would develop, so gave them all (except TH) minutes early in the season?
sorry, should have said
“was unable to predict with certainty at the start of the season”. He didn’t predict TH would necessarily come back from injury so well and jump MM in the pecking order. He didn’t predict that TH and MR would then go the rest of the season without missing time due to injuries and suspensions. He didn’t predict that MM would develop less during practice than BL and TH. All seem more obvious in retrospect than at the start of the season, maybe.

We aren't going to win
but this is our best national TV game
I don't like moral victories
But it is good to see Bobo and everyone trying hard. We have not given up
You know, for all the poor play we've seen this season and poor shooting today,
it does seem as if the team is working hard and really trying. Agree?
Most of them have played hard and are playing hard, today.
can’t fault the effort of MR EVER, and TH plays all out.
I think ML has played hard today and in many games.
sjh
They are trying ... they have been mostly trying
The tragedy is that they have been getting undermined with poor game/program management. There are enough teams out West doing much better than us this season without our talent. We have more than enough talent at least to have a god d*mn winning season but we have gotten screwed by poor coaching and leadership by Howland.
Yes on winning season
no on this game. This was not a game we were going to win. CBH blew the OR game and some others but today we did okay with a undermanned team on the road.
Which Thread is more popular right now?
This game or baseball?
I seriously considering switching
game. set. season.

Losers Again
I think ASU completely sucks from what I’ve seen today. NIT quality team
Not deserving of traditional UCLA uniforms
Switch over to black away jerseys and the yellow home jerseys because this team is a bunch of imposters and don’t deserve to wear the traditional uniforms.
Most of these guys do
they are playing hard — not enough talent or experience
This is truly proof of the one bad apple can spoil a barrel saying.
I actually think the bad apple is the coaching staff for leaving a bad apple on the floor.
sjh
Boateng showing us what Ryan Wright might have been?
Boateng is not usually dominant like this. Kind of reminds me of Ryan Wright. Boateng started at Duke then transferred to ASU when Sendek was hired.

So need suggestions for post game title
I have this so far:
Bruins (Unsurprisingly) Implode For The Last Time In 09-10 Regular Season
Any other ideas?
Okay if that is the point
But our 4th string center could not play Botang. We hustled but were out manned.
Not sure we imploded
I think the previously imploded building from Thursday finished collapsing today.

Been watching Josh Smith this week in the state tournament here in Seattle.
He had 20 pts 11 Rebounds in the semi-final, and 28 points the game before. He’ll play for the state championship tonight a 7pm.
Any video online?
Kevin Love’s high school put all his playoff games online.

Here’s some video from the game yesterday. You can’t miss JS!
Nestor: Here's your headline
Season Reviews Are In: Bruins Officially Suck
no no, we need to be more original
That headline could have been written after the first 10 games of the season.
Not much improvement for the team
I’ve looked in on them throughout the season, and since that John Wooden tourney they don’t seem to have improved much at all, except for a few individuals like Roll and Honeycutt.
god i hope he improves his conditioning
otherwise he’ll never see the floor for howland. i’ve now seen 2 games plus this clip and he has lots of weight to lose. but he clearly has a nose for the ball and floor position. reminds me of dexter pittman at texas. thanks for posting the link.

Howland's coaching
is not the issue. It’s his recruiting mistakes that will haunt the Bruins for the next few years. This guys only has the best pick up team that UCLA has to offer. Honeycutt and maybe the Pitbull are the only players deserving to wear those 4 letters. Lane? a lesser Keefe. Moser? not even good enough to get on the floor for this horrible team….so what does that tell you. Anderson? wow….what a joke….all he does is turn the ball over. Bobo? we’ve seen what he offers in limited minutes….slow..slow ..slow. Reeves…..looks to me like he lost some heart and doesnt want to finish the season. Wasnt he clear by doctors to play and won’t.! Wow…..are goggles alot on the court? This team will have a hell of a time improving with the only guys that can shoot are leaving.
Lane looks as good or better than Keefe looked as a freshman
Reeves shouldn’t risk eye injury in meaningless games – there is brave and there is self-defeatingly stupid.
Otherwise, I agree.
Never thought I'd say this...
but can’t wait until football season. Watched the basketball regular season finale from NYC. Really depressing. The game. Not NYC. It’s 50 today!
When exactly did this season end?
I’m glad it’s officially over, but did the season really end with the Fullerton game, or was it the Portland game?
All our guys (and our coaches) need to forget basketball for about a week or two, then get back to work and fix things. Yeah, I know they took basically the whole season off, but that’s not what I mean.
Kal and 'Furd on tv now in NorCal...
pac 10 is seriously embarassing this year

Game starts at 7 pm Pacific at the Tacoma Dome
The game you’ll want to see is: 2010 WIAA Boys 4A Championship
I hope he’ll lose some weight during the summer, as he’s a BIG guy now.
