Center Court: UCLA Basketball (@ Arizona State) Open Thread

UCLA Bruins at Arizona St. Sun Devils, Mar 6, 2010 1:00 PM PST

Not a lot left to say at this point. UCLA Bruins (13-16, 8-9) finish up their regular season against Arizona State Sun Devils (21-9, 11-6) this afternoon in Tempe. The crowd at at Wells Fargo Arena should be fired up. The Devils will be looking for a victory on national TV inching them closer to the Big Dance and it will still give them a shot at tying for a conference championship. Plus it's their "Senior Day" which will add a whole another level of emotion honoring their unquestioned leader in Derek Glasser.

For the Bruins it will be another uphill battle with a decimated roster. We will get Bobo Morgan back who is coming back after one game suspension. It is unclear though whether he will get to contribute from the bench. While in terms of matchup we might have a shot in this game because our personnel has performed OK against the type of 1-3-1 zone ASU likes to play, for the Bruins to have any shot they will have to go at it for entire 40 minutes.

The game will be televised live on CBS and is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. (MT)/1:05 p.m. (PT) tip-off. You can read up on all of our musings leading up to this game here. If you want to follow the game online you can do so via our official site. As always, we will be here in the game threads with our rapid fire takes and commentary. So let's get this game thread started. Fire away.

GO BRUINS.

Here’s my deal. When you pull a good player out early to send him a message, you’ve gotta have faith that he’s smart enough to receive that message. Drago has never proven that he’s smart enough for anything. He will, I repeat he will, continue to jack up shots.

for more than half the season I was one of CBH’s strongest defenders. Even argued there was little alternative for playng Ole.

But, there is no way to not see what a terrible coaching job he is doing, and that’s really sad.

Or is Morgan bouncing as he moves laterally. That usually indicates a foot injury or a lot of extra weight bouncing around.

Guys - still working on the post game thread

Here is the line I have so far:

Otherwise, there is really not much to say. I don’t feel like providing any observations concerning Nikola Dragovic, Jerime Anderson and the minutes they got today despite giving their "usual effort" on the basketball court. Yeah, Dragovic showed little signs of life with 2 back to back 3s in the second half, but by that point it was somewhat moot given his overall body of work (on both ends of the court) for the entire game (and rest of this season).

by Nestor on Mar 6, 2010 2:21 PM PST reply actions

sorry, should have said

“was unable to predict with certainty at the start of the season”. He didn’t predict TH would necessarily come back from injury so well and jump MM in the pecking order. He didn’t predict that TH and MR would then go the rest of the season without missing time due to injuries and suspensions. He didn’t predict that MM would develop less during practice than BL and TH. All seem more obvious in retrospect than at the start of the season, maybe.

The tragedy is that they have been getting undermined with poor game/program management. There are enough teams out West doing much better than us this season without our talent. god i hope he improves his conditioning

otherwise he’ll never see the floor for howland. i’ve now seen 2 games plus this clip and he has lots of weight to lose. but he clearly has a nose for the ball and floor position. reminds me of dexter pittman at texas. thanks for posting the link.

by DoubleTroubleBruin on Mar 6, 2010 3:19 PM PST up reply actions

Howland's coaching

is not the issue. It’s his recruiting mistakes that will haunt the Bruins for the next few years. This guys only has the best pick up team that UCLA has to offer. Honeycutt and maybe the Pitbull are the only players deserving to wear those 4 letters. Lane? a lesser Keefe. Moser? not even good enough to get on the floor for this horrible team….so what does that tell you. Anderson? wow….what a joke….all he does is turn the ball over. Bobo? we’ve seen what he offers in limited minutes….slow..slow ..slow. Reeves…..looks to me like he lost some heart and doesnt want to finish the season. Wasnt he clear by doctors to play and won’t.! Wow…..are goggles alot on the court? This team will have a hell of a time improving with the only guys that can shoot are leaving.
