Bruin Honors: Caldwell Wins Coach Of The Year, Dixon and Walker Named To All Pac-10

Nikki Caldwell has been honored as the PAC-10 Coach of the year. Jasmine and Markel have both been voted onto the All PAC-10 team and Markel also honored on the All-Freshman team:

UCLA Website announcement

In only her 2nd year at UCLA Coach Nikki Caldwell has earned this honor.  She turned this program around and turned a .500 club into a top 25 team with the ability to do more.  I am incredibly excited about her and the program and wish to congratulate her and say I hope she is here for a LONG time.

Star-divide

Jasmine, a fellow Jackrabbit, came in and made a huge impact this year.  Leading the team in scoring and rebounding.  I remember watching her as a freshman in high school and just being in shock.  It is rare to see a freshman at Long Beach Poly come in and do what she did.  She took over immediately and that carried through to college.  It also shows you how important coaching and environment are.  She was barely getting minutes at Rutgers before the transfer.  I can only hope she encourages more Jackrabbits to become Bruins.

Markel has been an awe-inspiring talent this year.  She sees the court well and plays incredible defense.  I just love watching her challenge the ball-handler with her full-court press.  Its an intensity this team had lacked.  I look forward to more years of her and can't wait for her to find her range with her jumper.  Occasionally this year she has shown glimpses of being a threat from outside 15 feet.  That is what is the big difference between UCONN and the rest of the WBB world.  Their girls are tall, athletic, can rebound, AND CAN SHOOT.  Thats what we need and its starting to happen.  Fantastic.

In addition

Coach Caldwell was named one of the 10 finalists for the Kay Yow National Coach of the Year Award. Congrats to her, as well as to Jasmine and Markel on a fantastic year. Hopefully the success spills over into the postseason.

Great news

and very well deserved for coach Caldwell, and Markel and Jasmine. It would be amazing for Nikki to recieve the Kay Yow award. DG needs to find more money to keep her around!

Hey you guys

how about bumping this to a headline…it’s the big story of the day.

Nikki Caldwell ...

is also one of only 29 women to play for a top 25 team and coach a top 25 team.

For those who don’t know, she played for Tennessee.

Does anyone know the number

of women who have coaches a national champion and played for one? I’m curious what type of company she would join if she ever gets there.

Beating Cooper

She should get the Coach of the Year just for shutting up Michael Cooper after Cooper’s first game remark. He has no class. We should have won the game at Galen!

I wish the Pac 10 tournament ...

wasn’t at Galen Center.

IIRC, we have no luck winning there.

We've never beaten USC there

we did defeat Oregon State there last year in the pac-10 tournament before falling to Stanford, so at least we know we can win in that building, just gotta beat SC there now

Here's a question for the group ...

how come the men’s All Pac 10 team and other awards was chosen by the league’s coaches but the women’s all conference team and other awards were chosen by the media?

Band

Does anyone know if the band is going to the Women’s game? I’m particularly concerned about the possible Satuday showdown vs suc., especially since there’s is a possibility that the men could still be playing. I think it needs to be loud and lively to help our women win at costco against the hater cooper.

Go Bruins!

i will be there. loud and proud. got at least one player to take a moment to make eye contact with me from Arizona this past weekend. I will do it again this week. In their heads I shall be.

She always looks good too!

I think there should be a mention of how gorgeous Coach Caldwell looks too on the sidelines. Once when DH & I were watching the women playing, my DH was very impressed w/ how Coach Caldwell was able to strut around in her heels!

Congrats

To Markel and Jasmine, your play speaks for itself and it is wonderful that others recognize that. the Coach has proved all that many of us saw last year-talent for the job, experience with a high level program, and a positive work ethic. I love it!!! Now, not only a good salary but the support of the fans would be a plus. With a concerted effort we could more than double the attendance for next season and those beyond showing Nikki that we are behind her
