This is something I have been meaning to write for a while. Note this is not an April Fool's joke.
I have hinted a number of times over the years that there might be a day when it will all have to end for me as one of the key drivers of this Bruin engine. It seems like times are changing. Just last week we had to say good bye to Blue Gray Sky, one of the pillars of world of college football blogosphere. Now this week we saw the end of Ben Malcomson's run at USCRipsIt (who IMO was the best Trojan blogger covering their program).
Sooner or later it will be time for me to say goodbye. I am not sure when that day is coming for yours truly on BN. It could be sometime very soon or it could be sometime in the not so near future. Still doesn't matter whenever that day comes, I think as a community, we'd like to hear from you ideas on how we make sure we keep this place going, even when yours truly is not in the picture.
We have had a great ride here for almost five years. For all the grief the UCLA family - our students and alums - get for being fair weather fans, this community (along with other great ones blogrolled under Bruin Sphere) really show through the passion of a rabid and vibrant Bruin fanbase that is one of the best in the college sports world. Just to give two examples:
- Despite UCLA missing the tournament for the first time in seven years, BN just had a record shattering March logging well over 200,000 unique visitors this past month.
- Already this year we have logged two of the three biggest months we have ever had in BN which included an incredible January with well over 300,000 unique visitors and just about 800,000 page views.
We can come up with number of other examples on how this community has become something special over the years. The question is how can we sustain it and keep it going as a congregating place for the most die-hard Bruin alums, students and fans who are passionate about UCLA athletics? How can we keep this place not only thriving but build on its growth from the last five years when time comes for yours truly to sign off as a daily front page editor/blogger for this community?
We would specifically love to hear from those - who have been around for a while and who have made their mark in this place - about whether you'd be interested in taking more leadership role through frontpage roundups, posts to keep BN going. Of course we are not going to desert this place. The rest of my frontpager colleagues will find a way to keep it going. However, it would be great to have two or three more Bruins (either alum or a student) who will be able to consistently "bring it" every day and take a more dominant role on the frontpage in terms of shaping narratives coming out of this community.
Of course, you should know that we can't offer any kind of financial reward in return. :-) As noted numerous times here before, none of us have ever made a single dime out of BN, as this has been a total labor of Bruin love. Whatever revenue that has been generated, we told the SBN folks (to date) to direct it towards entities of our choice directly associated with UCLA.
However, we do believe this place has become a pretty special platform, which can be used constructively to define the narratives shaping what we believe should be the best athletic program in the country . We also believe for any aspiring UCLA students or alums, who are interested in career pursuing sports media, this is a place to make your mark.
So if you are interested, in pursuing that kind of role taking on leadership responsibilities of this site you should definitely email us (at firstname.lastname@example.org) with links to your user account. Of course if you have other ideas, we would love to hear them as well.
Again, this is not a goodbye post. Not yet. We just need to start thinking it all out now in terms of how we can keep BN going when the time comes to say goodbye ... whenever it happens.
