Non-Revenue Bruin Sports Review and Calendar
UCLA dominated their Regional to move on to the NCAA's (Photo Credit: Official Site)
Women's Gymnastics
Nobody else stood a chance against top-seeded UCLA in the Regional hosted by the Bruins at Pauley Pavilion. The Bruins dominated the competition with a score of 197.825, more than a point better than second-place Arkansas. Anna Li scored a perfect 10 on the uneven bars and finished second to fellow Bruin Vanessa Zamarippa in the all-around. The Bruins will compete for the national title beginning April 22nd in Gainesville, FL.
Women's Golf
#2 UCLA had a loooooong ways to go as they entered the final round of the Arizona St. Invitational, but they came through. The Bruins came back from 12 strokes down in the final round to overtake top-ranked Arizona St. and win the tournament with it all highlighted by Stephanie Kono's 50-foot birdie putt. The Pac-10 Championships are next, beginning on April 19th.
Softball
After losing a series at #1 Washington the previous week, the #4 Bruins returned home hoping to take care of #9 Arizona St. Things didn't go as planned though and UCLA was swept by the visiting Sun Devils. First, they fell 8-5 despite three homers of their own, then they were bested 4-2 with two of ASU's runs unearned. Things got one run closer in the series finale, but the Bruins still came out on the wrong end of a 2-1 decision to fall to 27-9 on the year and 1-5 in the Pac-10. They'll look to turn things around this weekend when they go to Oregon St.
Women's Water Polo
The fourth-ranked Bruins had no problems with the road. They went to #7 LMU early in the week and cruised to a 8-4 win to put an end to the Lions' 14-game win streak. Things were tougher at #14 San Diego St., but the Bruins outscored the Aztecs 4-1 in the second half to complete a 7-5 comeback victory. UCLA is not 17-6 and 4-2 in the MPSF with the regular season finale at #1 USC on tap Saturday.
Men's Volleyball
The #7 Bruins' five-game road trip continued last week and was a mix of good and bad. The good came first as the Bruins came from two sets to one down to beat #8 Long Beach St. and earn head coach Al Scates his 1,200th career win. A four-set loss to #14 San Diego dropped the Bruins to 15-12 and 10-10 in conference play though with Pacific and #1 Stanford at home this weekend.
Women's Tennis
Arizona didn't test #8 UCLA in the slightest as the Bruins defeated them 7-0, but #21 Arizona St. pushed them. The Sun Devils made things difficult on the Bruins until UCLA came away 4-3 winners. The 18-3 Bruins are 5-1 in conference and will host 17th-ranked USC in their final regular season match of the year on Friday.
Men's Golf
The seventh-ranked Bruins began play at the US Intercollegiate on Sunday and will play through Tuesday. The Western Intercollegiate is over the weekend.
Men's Tennis
#10 UCLA played Arizona on Sunday and will play #3 USC this week.
Track and Field
Both the men and women will compete in the Mt. SAC Relays and the men will travel to #3 Oregon over the weekend.

Great round-up Rye
Here’s to hoping one of these spring squads can bring home, what, national title # 105? Go Bruins!
Can anybody who follows gymnastics
let us know how our gymnastics team stacks up nationally? We’re obviously one of the best in the nation, but would a 197.825 be enough to win it all, or will they need to perform even better?
We're havin' too much fun today. We ain't thinkin' 'bout tomorrow.
I meant to mention this in my round up
but our score in the Regional was the highest score of any team in any Regional in the country. I don’t know gymnastics, but I know that’s good.

And this was the 2nd meet weekend in a row that UCLA had the top score in the nation.
I don’t know a lot either, but that seems pretty good!
Go Bruins!
I guess that's not too bad.
Here’s hoping they can bring home Number 105. It’s been too stressful waiting until late May/early June to get our first national championship the last couple of years.
We're havin' too much fun today. We ain't thinkin' 'bout tomorrow.
Winning scores last few years
found a list of recent champions and scores here in the NCAA records and here for last year’s results
2009 Georgia 197.45
2008 Georgia 197.45
2007 Georgia 197.85
2006 Georgia 197.75
2005 Georgia 197.825
2004 UCLA 198.125
2003 UCLA 197.825
So our regional score of 197.825 is definitely in national title range, and would have been good enough in 4 of the last 7. Let’s hope our women can add a few tenths to that regional score and bring home #105.

Gymnastics schedule update
They’ll be in the afternoon session of the prelims as the 1 seed, starting at 10:00 LA time on Thursday. As the 1 seed, they’re paired with nos. 4, 5, 8, 9 and 12 which will help, as the top three in that group then advance.
It's next week though, right?

I moved to Gainesville 3 years ago
and haven’t got a chance to cheer for a UCLA team in person until now.
Senior year in Westwood, 2004, I went to Pauley to watch the team bring home the natty in person.
Last year in Gainesville, 2010, I go to the ODome to…..
I like the symmetry

Last year the Bruins lost
to a tiebreaker & did not advance. 234.575 vs 234.650 points when all 6 competitors were counted. Normally only top 5 competitor’s scores counted in each of the 4 events.
Then the top 3 teams advance to the super 6 Championship round. Top team score wins the Championship.
Then next day, the girls do it again for the individual titles.
Three days of tough competitions. — lot of pains.

If you’ve never watched these ladies compete, I highly recommend it. We’re losing Anna Li next year, but we’re bringing in the top recruiting class in the nation, including the #1 recruit Samantha Peszek, who was on the U.S. Olympic team in 2008.
