Women's Gymnastics

The top-ranked Bruins will compete for the national title beginning on Thursday. UCLA will compete with six other teams in the afternoon session and the top three teams will advance to Friday's Super Six team finals. The individual competition is Saturday and the whole event is hosted by the University of Florida. The last time the NCAA Championships were in Gainesville, the Bruins brought home the national title. Every part of the competition will be streamed live at NCAA.com.

Women's Golf

#2 UCLA will compete for the conference title when the Pac-10 Championships begin on Monday.

Women's Water Polo

It was an ugly game for #4 UCLA as they were easily disposed of by #1 USC, 14-5. After playing to a 2-2 tie in the first quarter, the Bruins were outscored 7-0 in the second to put the game out of reach. At 17-7 and 4-3, UCLA's regular season is over, but they will christen the Spieker Aquatics Center with its first postseason action in two weeks when they host the MPSF Tournament.

Men's Golf

#5 UCLA just missed out on a tournament win with a second place finish behind #4 Oregon. The gap between UCLA and the rest of the field was gigantic and the tournament really became a two-team event that the Ducks did well enough to pull it out. The 26th will be the next time UCLA takes to the links when they play in the Pac-10 Championships.

Star-divide

Softball

The seventh-ranked Bruins took it to Oregon St., outscoring them 26-8 in three games last weekend. The big win was in the opener when UCLA smashed the Beavers, 12-0, in just five innings. The next game was a historic win for the Bruins as they picked up the program's 1,500th win in a 4-2 win. The Bruins brought the bats again on Sunday as five players has multiple hits in a 10-6 victory. A trip to #8 Stanford this weekend will complete the Bruins' (30-9, 4-5 Pac-10) six game road trip.

Men's Volleyball

The ups and the downs for #7 UCLA continue. First, the Bruins pulled off the big-time upset by defeating #1 Stanford, 30-24, 23-30, 21-30, 30-26, 15-7. The win was the Bruins' third win over the top-ranked team this season. It was followed up by an awful loss to Pacific though, a match that marked the Tigers' first conference win in three years, a streak that lasted 59 matches. A trip to BYU for in round one of the MPSF Tournament is next.

Women's Tennis

Any time you beat USC, it's a good week. That's what #7 UCLA did when they defeated #16 USC easily at home last week. The Bruins took the doubles point and the first three doubles matches to clinch the match and ended up winning things, 6-1. The Pac-10 Championships are next.

Men's Tennis

If the women had a good week, the #12 men had a great week because they didn't just beat USC, they upset the #4 Trojans. It was a nailbiter, but the doubles point put UCLA ahead and they won the match on the final singles match competed in three sets to win it, 4-3. On to the Pac-10 Championships this week.

Men's Track and Field

The Bruins were no match for #3 Oregon, who easily defeated the Bruins in a dual meet in Eugene, OR. Dylan Knight was the UCLA star on the afternoon by winning the steeplechase with the number three time in the NCAA this year. The UCSD Triton Invitational is next.

Women's Track in Field

At the Tom Jones Memorial Classic, Katy Viuf set a new lifetime best in the pole vault with a mark that is the third-best in the nation this year. She led a group of several Bruins with season-bests on the afternoon. The women will join the men at the UCSD Triton Invitational this week.

Mens' volleyball team

I don’t get these guys. WTH has been going on this year?

I know, it's so frustrating!

Injuries and academic eligibility have been issues – apparently Muagututia got hurt during the Pacific game but as good as he is, others should have been able to step in. It must be so frustrating for Coach Scates.

A Bit Off-Topic but will report in anyway.....

CJS and the Men’s Soccer team are still attempting to find their way this Spring.

For all you insiders, correct me if I am wrong, but I don’t believe the team has won a single match this spring season having last lost to UC Irvine 0 – 2,

College Soccer News just released an article on this year’s signing class. Most interestingly is the article’s underlying message…. don’t expect much in 2010 in what is sure to be a rebuilding year:

Losing as many guys as we did

it’s no surprise. Hopefully we can straighten it out and pick it up some this fall, but I’m not expecting much.

Bruin Forward Play

What concerns me most about the Bruin’s recent history is the lack of goal production from the team’s forwards.

Consider that in the CJS era, (four years out of the past six ), the UCLA team, in the history of the program has scored the fewest amount of goals in a season as follows:

2009 – 31 (see note below)

2008 – 37
2007 – 26
2005 – 28

  • 12 of the 31 goals were scored by the Bruins OCM position in Naka. ( and I am willing to bet that a fair share of Naka’s 2009 goals were from Free Kicks rather than the run of play.

What ever happened to the day when the Bruins rostered a forward where 18 (Joe-Max), 16 (Seth George) or 14 (Taylor/Tennyson) goals were netted in a season?

Is it the system of play? Or is it the “forward by committee” approach where the match substitution strategy is such that the guys never get to establish their rhythm?

I hope Monge produces this season as if not, he IMHO, he isn’t earning his scholie. I don’t mean to call out a player and granted he has been hurt some in his first two seasons as a Bruin but nonetheless, his goal production in the two years wearing the 4-letters has been absolutely anemic.

With Lapnet crashing and burning last season and Monge not producing, it appears the 2008 recruitment of a quality forward was a total failure. In 2009, it seems we did a little better in Hoffman and Raynr yet Collins has yet to prove his prep accolades and hype. Forwards are paid to put the ball in the net.

I hope Monge and midfielder Arreola bust out this season but the results so far this Spring from all of the above haven’t indicated otherwise.

What a day makes ...

Women’s golf is ahead at this moment by 4 at Pac-10 Championship. We finished at 4th yesterday.

Women's Golf

Arizona State has been leading by a fairly large margin. The GolfStat results for 2 of their golfers, were messed up.

On the upside, SUC is playing horribly, and we are solidly in 2nd place.

Something happened to ASU,

now it reads DNF, didn’t finish?
UCLA ahead by 3 over Ariz, with Cal and SC finishing up for day 2

ASU Golf

It appears that 2 of their golfers withdrew, which would take ASU out of the running for the championship. However, I am not sure I completely trust GolfStat. Will look for confirmation from the ASU web site, but that probably won’t come until later today.
