Russell Westbrook Player of the Game as Thunder defeat Lakers

Remember this guy?

Another emotional dunk by Russell Westbrook powered the Oklahoma Thunder to their first post-season win Thursday night, putting them 1-2 in their playoff series against the LA Lakers. Westbrook had 27 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists on his way to being named player of the game.

More highlights after the jump.

Star-divide

Eight of RW's 10 first-half points were at the rim, including two dunks as the Lakers led at the half 50-43.

In the second half RW showed his scoring versatility, including 10 clutch points in the fourth quarter as the Thunder pulled out the win. RW is averaging 23 ppg through three games against the Lakers. Will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Nice to see a Bruin excelling in the post-season.

That dunk he had over Odom

I wanted to see if he was screaming “LET’S GO” afterwards.

Streamed the game online

The commentators were giving some great praise towards UCLA training NBA PG’s, even complimenting Ben Howland. They did note that CBH was having a harsh year, likely because of the lack of NBA-material PG.

Rooting for the Lakers to win and RW to do well.

Very proud of Russell. Next year, he and DC should be beasts.

Not good...

for the Lakers. There is no point guard on the Lakers that can guard Russell Westbrook. He’s too fast, and jumps through the roof. They might be able to contain Keven Durant, but RW is a problem.

... and

I am not shedding any tears. Not any more.

Just a take

I still like the Lakers.

They suck at point guard.

Just not their Trogan connections :)

Ha ...

Yeah, it’s cool. Honestly I can’t help rooting for the Lakers. I always will. However, I just haven’t been as emotionally invested in them as I was during the Magic era. Things are different these days I guess. Not into the pro leagues as much as I used to be. Really love seeing former Bruins excel though.

I watched the draft night last night just because of Price. Oh well. He will kick ass anyway.

I feel the same way

I root for the Lakers over Team X, but the degree to which i want them to win depends on which team X is. The Thunder are easily my second favorite team in the league so I’m enjoying this series. Obviously I’m also partial to the Hornets now and I suppose if the Wolves got on TV more I’d root for them, but they don’t. I never really liked the Nuggets but if their success means AA’s success, then I’ll root for them over any team that’s not one of the teams I already listed.

I didn't get to watch last nights game

Apparently the Thunder crowd looked really cool in all blue. Something Pauley should look every game.

And we wonder why

DC is doing better than we thought. Come on…he had to guard and be guarded by RW during practices? Every single day?

Enjoy Russell's success.

Great to see him when he comes in town and stops by UCLA.

Fisher guarding Westbrook is like a 5-lane open freeway trying to stop a Ferrari.

Obviously RW made the right decision in jumping to the NBA when he did

Seeing as how he got drafted fourth and is currently in a great situation and all. But I have to wonder how awesome that 2009 team would have been with him in the fold. Gotta say, it would have been nice that year to have a guy who could get to the rim whenever he wanted, shut down the opposing team’s best scorer, and throw down momentum-swinging dunks with regularity.

I had a hard time watching Westbrook on internet feed...

… he was way to quick for my streaming :) Love seeing the guy play, and play well. The Lakers are making him look like the best PG in the NBA right now.

Go Bruins!

I loved everything about the game...

except for the final score. A perfect scenario would be for RW to get the same all-pro caliber stats, but his team ultimately lose by a couple points.

Yep, I’m another one of those lakers fans.

Shannon Brown

Am I crazy or isn’t it worth some sacrifice to see if the bigger and stronger Shannon Brown can cause RW some problems? Although, like the rest of you, would like to see RW go for 30+ but the Lakers win.

PS Have you ever seen anybody jump off one foot with the speed and power he does? Reminds me of Baron Davis with his quick leaping ability off of his strong leg.

RW v. JF

I was hoping to see more PT for JF — head to head with Russell. Its no contest RW v. Fish, but I guess PJ was looking for some clutch 3s from him. Shannon might slow down RW but I don’t think JF would. Hate to think that he has plateau’d in his career but that seems to be the case — not much growth from last year to this. How do you think he is reacting to all the press and success that Russell is receiving? Sometimes he looks quite “out of it” on the bench; alot of finger nail biting. Is he a happy camper in his role with the Lakers?

by classof67 on Apr 23, 2010 3:45 PM PDT reply actions

it's funny...

before the season I heard an interview where JF was seriously talking about competing for the starting job. My first thought was does he really believe that he has a shot? I think he has the right attitude, but he would be starting by now as a Laker and Fish being a great guy off the bench and finishing games if that were the case (to preserve the veteran Fish if for nothing else). Unfortunately, he just isn’t strong enough on defense (I don’t think) to ever start anywhere. Although I do really like his game and would be interested to see what he would do with starters minutes over an entire season. He is a better passer and floor manager than I think he gets credit for…sometimes the team situation you find yourself in dictates your career more than it should.

RW just gets better and better

He can flat out play, and is a beast among Pt. Guards. His upside goes all the way to Dwayne Wade. It is confusing rooting for the Lakers and wanting RW to play his best. RW did the Lakers in.

I know the feeling

My inner voice keeps saying “Torch that guy, Russ! He can’t stop you…oh wait…”

lol

I am sure all the Bruin alums who are Warrior fans (or just Laker haters in general) are having a ball.
