UCLA/Stanford Rubber Game Broken Thread
So the undefeated streak is no more. Unfortunately, that was going to happen at some point and when you've hit 22 in a row, it's likely to come sooner rather than later. Nevertheless, the Bruins still have their rubber game versus Stanford today that will give them the series win they came in looking for should they win. The game gets underway at 2 pm PST from Jackie Robinson Stadium and a day after a crowd of over 1,400 overwhelmed Jackie Robinson Stadium, there is talk that today's crowd could be just as big. It should be a fun atmosphere out at the ballpark.
While the Bruins are undoubtedly stout at the top of their rotation with Gerrit Cole and Trevor Bauer (even after less than stellar starts this weekend), the thing that many believe sets the pitching staff apart from the rest is the staff's depth. One part of that depth is today's starter, Rob Rasmussen, who enters with a 3-0 record, 2.64 ERA and 13.78 strikeouts per nine innings, which ranks fourth in the nation. He will be opposed by Brett Mooneyham, who is 0-3 this season and if you want an idea of how bad he was early on in the year, his six inning, one run performance last week lowered his ERA about two full runs to 6.85.
All of that is today at 2 pm PST as the two teams battle it out for a key Pac-10 series win. While the Bruins dropped their first contest last night, so did Arizona St. up at Oregon so there are no more undefeated streaks to worry about. It's all about the series win and holding up in the Pac-10 standings now.
Again, we've got three ways to follow the game. The most informative and detailed is the online audio call with John Ramey, Danny Rees and Nick Theodorou. You can also follow along on GameTracker and on my UCLA baseball twitter, like always. There are plenty of options to follow along with our undefeated Bruins so follow along and check in on this thread with your game updates, thoughts, questions, opinions or whatever else you've got. It's game time, it's your game thread.

LA Times and UCLA baseball
So this morning I opened my LAT to see what could they possibly know about UCLA baseball. After all, they have ignored them so far this season, recorded incorrect scores, and provided the 4 pt. font score on the back page, if you look hard enough. Sure enough, this morning the headlined article on page 4, i believe, says “UCLA Loses First Game, etc.” The paper does not have the time or interest to find JRS when the win streak is on, and cover this historical series of games, but does have time to note the first loss. ? WTF again

Well, I would guess that it depends on if you have a forest of just a tree. :-)
Probably the Cardinals and the Tree
The Stanford Tree
is the unofficial mascot of Stanford University. Stanford’s team name is “The Cardinal,” referring to the vivid red color (not the common song bird as at several other schools), and the University has never been able to come up with an official mascot which adequately conveys the fierceness and sporting prowess it had hoped to symbolize with that particular shade of sanguine.
The student body voted to be the Robber Barrons after the school dropped the Indian Mascot but...
The ghost of Leland Stanford was having none of that I guess, so they are the Cardinal.
Go Bruins!
Interesting. I did not realize that they were a vivid color.
Wow, how fierce.
My favorite mascot is the Banana Slug
Just kidding....Have not watched any (0 seconds) of the tourney.
First time ever. I just didn’t have it in me after this season.
It's a good thing baseball has been good or I would have been
sitting around the house with my finger up my nose.
This just in from spring practice..........
Brandon Sermons broke his femur and had to be taken away. Sorry to be bring the bad news, but just wanted all you baseball fans who love Bruin football to know.
The good news is that it is a break and not a knee.
The break will be good in 6 weeks, the knee might not ever be right.
Sac fly to score a run, but the runner from second tags and gets
thrown out at third.
5-1 Bruins after 4 innings.
LTBru,
are you there? I’m wondering how the crowd is on a Sat afternoon. It was great to hear that JRS was filled for a game. The team more than deserves it.

Can somebody tell me the simple differences between NCAA baseball and MLB?
Besides the aluminum bats, of course.

If there are major differences, it might be worth a fanpost.
I love baseball, but have never followed college ball. This years team might bring in a lot of outsiders.

I agree.
Though I don’t think that there would be many. The bats like you say and I think in general the park dimensions are smaller. Other than that, I would not know. College ball has been hard to follow over the years due to poor coverage. Nice to have the audio and Gametrak especially for those of us that can’t easily get to the games.
Exactly. No TV = hard to follow.
I’m not sure how much different the game is. I know college scores used to be 22-24 regularly, but that seems to have been mellowed out.

Did they slow bat bounce-back down?
I read that Hayward from the Braves was a UCLA signee. Could you imagine him with an aluminum bat?

I did a preseason post that I titled College Baseball 101
That has the mechanics of the game like scheduling, postseason, some things to look for. Check it out and if you’ve got more questions put them in a comment or shoot me an email.

Thanks, Ryan
Great, great explanation of College Baseball 101. It seems as if the College Baseball demigods are enthralled with batting and bored by great pitching,
I’ve been following your posts for the last month, since the season began. I’d sure like to get your take on the national collegiate season up to this point. It seems as if there has been a shift to the west coast in terms of quality teams, but that the rest of the country hasn’t figured it out. On the NCAA site the first time UCLA was mentioned was when it lost to Stanford yesterday. But UCLA, Virginia, Georgia and Arizona State appear to be the quality teams this season.
When do you think the first RPIs (notwithstanding their shortcomings) wil be out?
Keep up the great work! And thanks for the crystal clear explanations and terrific reporting.

Ask me this question in another week
I’ve been thinking over some things recently and talking it over with some other college baseball fans. Give me another week of observation and I’ll give you some answers. Just remember to ask it in one of the posts next weekend.

Pitching has been lacking in the last two games. Beacom did well yesterday
but the rest have struggled.
OT
Magic Johnson always wears a MSU t-shirt. I wish our Bruin stars would do the same (UCLA attire). I never even see them clap!
Go Bruins!

Please keep it coming!

I think he let up some.
His first few jumpers were nothing but net. Then he started barely drawing rim.
