Russell Westbrook Makes You Proud To Be A Bruin

I realize a lot of people who read this site also root for the Lakers. That's fine -- for most it's the home team and all and I don't really mind the Lakers-USC connection. You're favorite pro teams are gonna have some Trojans involved sometimes .. it happens.

Like in our house, we root for the Jacksonville Jaguars, only because they have Marcedes Lewis and Maurice Jones-Drew. Jack Del Rio is their head coach ... oh well.

Well, we are also rooting for Oklahoma City and the reason is Russell Westbrook.

This story from ESPN LA makes us like him even more.

More after the jump.

Star-divide

I don't seen the fanpost point of posting sections of the story. You should really read it yourself.

I will highlight one part that I really like, though it's far from the main point in the story.

Westbrook's work ethic hasn't changed much since Barr's passing six years ago. He's usually the first one to arrive at the training facility and the last one to leave.

"I've always had to prove myself to people growing up," Westbrook said. "I had to show them that I could do this and I could do that and paying no mind to what the critics said. Just go in every day and work hard when other people are not."

What's interesting is that this is exactly what they say about Arron Afflalo. They also say it about Jordan Farmar, who reacted to the Lakers drafting point guard Javaris Crittenden with the exact same attitude and work ethic.I've heard the same stuff about Darren Collison: first to arrive, last to leave.

When you think about it, those are Howland type players -- no hype, but a willingness to work harder than the next guy. I won't mention any names here -- this is a feel good story -- but don't you get the feeling that some of the guys who passed through this program in the last couple of years just don't have the Westbrook approach to the game?

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

You forgot Mbah a Moute and KL, too.

But, interestingly, have you ever heard ONE positive “puff piece” about Jrue’s work ethic? I know I haven’t.

mm hmm go thunder!!!

i knew of the story, must have been wikipedia or something, or maybe a farnham sideline report. never read the whole story, and it certainly was an eloquent piece written by markazi. i think he must have benefited from high school english classes at notre dame more than anything he ever took from señora ross, but i digress…

nice feel good story, but can we email it to RN and TH? maybe even ML…

Sorry, people, but I was a Laker fan BEFORE I was a Bruin...

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar — All-time Bruin AND Laker.

Mitch Kupchak — didn’t get the GM job until AFTER he got his MBA at UCLA.

Jordan Farmar — jumped to the NBA early, BUT ended up with the Lakers right out of school, so he is exempt from my early-entry griping.

RW could very well be the next Dwyane Wade… but this is the PLAYOFFS, people.

Great article

With all due respect to Ben Howland, Westbrook was a “Warrior” long before he stepped foot on campus.

My Favorite Bruin

It’s been really cool see Westbrook do so well in the NBA after falling for his game while at UCLA. I remember a quote from Darren Collison a while back on BruinsNation saying that all the members of the team would be dragging themselves into the gym in the mornings, half asleep and wishing they were still curled up in the sack. They would open the door to the court and Westbrook would be by himself throwing down 360 tomahawk dunks at like 6:30 in the morning. That scene just makes me smile.
