Pauley Renovation: Setting The Record Straight Re. LA Times Misinformation

I had already pointed out two serious issues with the recent LA Times article on the UCLA administration concerning renovation of Pauley Pavilion. Based on those two mistakes alone the "report" looks sloppy and can be inferred as a hit job on the UCLA administration to whip up outrage.

Looks like there are couple of more glaring misinformation from the article. The "report" provided:

Few students will be able to afford a good view at the renovated Pauley, where seats between the baskets are expected to cost more than Lakers tickets, Berman said. Season tickets will require a one-time fee in the tens of thousands of dollars.

The first sentence is just categorically false. Under the new plan the students will actually have more floor level seats. They will be along the sidelines on the opposite of side of team benches. In addition they will have floor level seating behind the West basket (which is not present in the current configuration):

In addition the students will continue to get discounted tickets. IIRC the students are going to be getting special $99 packages which will get the Den Sports passes. That plan has been received pretty favorably so far here on BN. We have heard that UCLA will continue to look for ways to increase student attendance and we are going to use this forum to always brain storm those issues). So the point about few students being able to afford good views at renovated Pauley is just totally bogus.

Lastly Bergman's point about the requirement of "one time fee" is off base because from what I gather from reading the info that there is no such "requirement". If you go through the information laid out in Campaign of Champions website, it will provide details on new seating plan which takes into account factors such "consecutive years of season ticket purchase in men's basketball, "consecutive years as an annual athletic fund donor," life time giving, alumni, student-athlete alumni etc.

I understand people have legitimate and substantive concerns about the plan for this renovation. I personally am somewhere in the middle on it. However, what is not cool is for the LA Times to print reports that are based on blatant falsehood and misinformation in what appears to be a pathetic and hackish attempt to spark outrage against UCLA. The paper should issue correction and apology. Yet we know they usually don't have the integrity to step up that way.

GO BRUINS.
