Matt Carlino is officially a Bruin signing his NLOI to play for Ben Howland. From the official site:
"I'm really excited about Matt Carlino joining our basketball program and family," Howland said. "He is an outstanding shooter, a very good passer, a good athlete and an outstanding kid. I look for him to make an immediate impact and be a very good player for us. I think he is an outstanding addition to our team."
Carlino averaged 13.4 points, 5.9 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game while leading Bloomington South HS to a 23-1 overall record as a junior in 2009-10. The Panthers won the Conference Indiana title with a 7-0 mark. BSHS lost to Jeffersonville 58-56 in the 4A State Regional Finals this past season and was ranked as the No. 1 team in the state for most of the season. Carlino was named to the Indiana Junior All-Star Team and to the All-Conference Indiana Team in 2009-10.
Welcome to Bruin Nation Matt. We hope you will develop into a Ben Ball warrior in next four years.

not sure about CBH's expectations here
is he being generous and hoping he can live up to the comments here, or does he really think he can make an immediate impact? Sounds like CBH just stoked up the pressure on this kid a bit (notwithstanding your valiant efforts, N, to stop people getting too carried away)
My post on the release is ironic in light of yours
I may seem guilty of hyping Carlino too much. Really, I am hoping he can be a back up point. I would not be surprised if he doesn’t make that as he is so young and raw to PG but I remain convinced that we need another PG and hope Carlino can fill that roll,
I know your thoughts on this Nestor, but to my mind this is not about being right or wrong, this is about hope. The alternative is worrisome.
Meh
Official releases are what they are. They can make Steve Lavin and Karl Dorrell sound like legit D1 headcoaches. Like Howland’s enthusiasm but I think at least here we will maintain perspective (while also hoping for the positive).

The Official Release has a lot of fun facts
For those down on his final High School season stats (his junior year because of the early graduation which which were kind of mild for a UCLA recruit out of high school), look at his sophomore and freshman year stats:
While starting his first two years at point guard, he led the Highland Hawks to a 29-4 mark in 2008-09 (sophomore season) and a 24-6 record in 2007-08 (freshman campaign). As a sophomore, he averaged 19.7 points, 6.2 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 2.7 steals per game while being named first team All-State and the Fiesta Region Player of the Year, as well as the East Valley Player of the Year. HHS lost in the state finals 70-62 to St. Mary’s High School (Phoenix). As a freshman, he averaged 16.2 points, 6.8 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 1.9 steals per game. He was named first team All-Fiesta Region and second team All-State in 2007-08.
Also I doubt any kid in UCLA history has had this unique stat:
starting all three years for a No. 1 ranked team in [two DIFFERENT] state.
Can he play man D?
That does not show up in the stat sheets. With CBH’s desire to return to man, I assume he’s recruiting kids who can play it.

some post on Indiana blog sites – sounds like they were pretty upset at losing him… hope he works out for us…
