UCLA Football Picks Up First Commitment For Class Of 2011
While Troy is burning UCLA is just getting started with its recruiting class of 2011. Remember we don't have a lot of rides to give out this year (I think the number is around 10 to 15). So CRN is going to take his time and he is approaching this just like he did last summer. Still the timing seems very ripe to roll out the first commit and looks like we just got him. Brandon Huffman of BruinReportOnline.com just tweeted a little while ago:
UCLA gets their first commitment for the 2011 class from Stockton (Calif.) Lincoln receiver Brandin Cooks...
Cooks' Scout.com profile has him listed as 5-11, 165 with 4.4 speed. Besides UCLA he also had offers from Washington, Oregon, California, Oregon State, Boise State and few others school. His recruiting video looks pretty slick:
You can certainly get a sense of that 4.4 speed. More after the jump.
Here is his bio from Scout.com:
Was named First Team All-League and First Team All-Area as a junior in 2009 at Stockton (Calif.) Lincoln. Named Team Offensive Player of the Year. A three-year varsity spring and Junior Olympic sprinter. Had 46 receptions for 783 yards and 10 touchdowns. Ran for 90 yards on 14 carries. Defensively, had three interceptions for 110 yards. Returned 10 kicks for 298 yards and had 12 touchdowns total. Had 1,283 all-purpose yards.
As a 2008 sophomore, had 29 receptions for 600 yards and seven touchdowns, had 71 yards on nine carries and a score, and returned a kick 75-yards for a touchdown. All-League Honorable Mention.
Sounds good to us. Here is to a great Senior season for Brandin. Let's welcome him to the only bowl eligible program in the City of Los Angeles.
GO BRUINS.

Great looking kid.
He uses his blockers well. Nice speed, great instincts.
And I like the GPA. Remember, for us it’s all about the education first.

Nice
That’s a good solid commit to start the commit list. Based on what I’m hearing, we’ll have 16-18 guys come in this year.

Mark it down
Brandin will be one of the top 5 WR in the West. Guy is fast and is deadly smart. At least a 3.7 GPA

Fast and smart?
I guess it took less than a minute to realize he wasn’t Trogan material.
Who was that qb on his team
That qb (#7) looked very good to me. Any info on him?
wow
That was the lefty correct? There was a right-handed qb early on in the mix that was very good too. Both those qbs helped make Cooks look good. Also the safety that caught him and saved a TD at about the 0:40 mark has some good wheels.
The speed is there, the balance is there, the ability to use his body to seal off an opponent is there. The only thing I saw was this guy’s catching technique is horrible right now – once he learns to catch the ball with his hands he should be a monster. Oh yeah, and his downfield blocking could use a bit of work, but that’s pretty standard for a HS receiver.

Hands
I love that he uses his hands to catch the ball.

Nestor, you're one cruel sumbitch!
“..Remember we don’t have a lot of rides to give out this year (I think the number is around 10 to 15)..”
..especially in light of the paucity of sholarships that the Condoms will have!
(Boy, that must’ve been fun to write.)
God, it's great to be a Bruin!
Tape
I love at the end where he is making so many moves the camera guy can’t follow him.
I might have not included the fumble on the kick-off but that is just me.
