UCLA Takes On Cal St. Fullerton In Bruins' Toughest Challenge Of The Season

Coach will be rooting on Steve Rodriguez and rest of our Bruins tonight. Photo Credit: ak4797

Man, we have had some week here on BN. This time last Friday the mood was different as all of us were experience an unreal concoction of emotions as Coach was preparing for his eternal date Nell. His departure left us in melancholy and reflective mood all week. Yet one could just sense how we were collectively lifting each other's spirits through posts after posts sharing comments, reflections, videos, pictures and memories about the Coach. Then the baseball team cruised through the Regionals disposing of a great program like LSU, a solid one in UCI and just destroying Kent State. The vibe kept building with the softball's magic carpet ride, which seemed directly driven by Coach upstairs.

Now here we are a week later, the mood is different as the baseball team (46-13) gets ready to take on their biggest challenge to date. Cal State Fullerton has always had our number. They have had our number this season too. Yet I would think the UCLA baseball team should play with no sense of pressure and expectations. They have already had an incredible season and in my book, shattering all kinds of team records. In my book they have lived up to Coach's ideals in the way they have embraced team first mindset and also battled through adversity after their much hyped 22-0 start came to an end. So they just need to relax and keep having fun like they have done the entire season.

So here we go. Gerrit Cole (10-2, 3.11) gets the start tonight against Noe Ramirez, RHP, So. (11-1, 2.63). The first pitch is scheduled for this evening at 7:30 pm PST. The game is going to be live across the nation on ESPN2. You can also follow along with GameTracker or get updates on Ryan's UCLA baseball twitter. So might as well thread this as our game thread with updates, thoughts, analysis and anything else.

GO BRUINS.

Scary inning there...

deep fly ball, just ran down by the first CSF batter; 3rd batter hits a HR-length foul before grounding out. Settle down Gerritt and get some Ks.

OT... NCAA track & field champs

Decent day for UCLA tracksters at the NCAAs…
- two women’s Pole Vaulters (Pena and Viuf ) finished 3rd and 4th, respectively.
- 800-meter runner, JR Cory Primm, who set the school record in the semifinal a couple days ago, placed 5th in the NCAA final.
— Men’s 4×100 relay ran very well in the semifinal and will race in the NCAA final on Saturday (without their two fastest guys (Carroll, academics; Rolle, slight injury).

Overall, however, a disappointing season peppered with a handful of outstanding individual performances here and there. But things are looking up for next year, with a top-20 recruiting class coming in and a couple big uglies (throwers like Darius Savage and Matt Kosecki) coming off of red-shirt seasons to mature, build strength. Primm and the entire relay team will be back as well.

Easy money and faithless women, red-eye whiskey for the pain...

When we have a good track team, it's really a blast to watch.

Since the schollies were cut back, things have not been quite like they used to. Always fun to watch though.

I know the team is young…but to consistently play your worst game against the same team is a mental weakness. Hope they pull it out but at this point UCLA is to CSF as Wazzu is to UCLA in hoops.

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

Off topic...

5 schools… Florida, Oregon, Washington, Alabama and Fresno State have allegedly made illegal contact with USC’s Dillion Baxter. Florida has already denied the claim.

How about Fresno trying to jump in there?!

Wow.

What a killer that is to get picked off. Fuck

by BillyZoom on Jun 11, 2010 11:11 PM PDT reply actions

There was no need to send that runner

You want him on first with no outs cause a double play scores the winning run. Absolutely horrible. There is a reason that we don’t beat them, and you just saw it.

we cant even pin it on that one pick off

the boys were given tons of opportunities and then some to tie it or take the lead, and they completely squandered every single chance they had to come back…that was simply infuriating
