UCLA Looks To Extend The Season Against Cal State Fullerton

Justin Uribe and his team-mates will try to extend the season this evening at JRS. Photo Credit: UCLA baseball (flickr)

Well not much else to say beyond what Ryan wrote in early morning post game re-cap. UCLA Bruins (46-14) have had a terrific baseball season to date but it will all come to a close this evening, if we can't exorcise our Titan ghosts. Trevor Bauer will look to extend UCLA's season for another day against the Titans, who are going to counter with Daniel Renken (12-2, 3.95).

The Bruin offense simply didn't get it done last night, failing to come through in key situations and making unfortunate mistakes. Hopefully they will put that behind him today and do a much better job of executing the little things with the season on the line.

The game will be televised live nationally on ESPN2 and will also feature a live video stream on ESPN3.com. The first pitch is scheduled for this evening at 4:00 pm PST. You can also follow along with GameTracker or get updates on Ryan's UCLA baseball twitter. So might as well thread this as our game thread with updates, thoughts, analysis and anything else.

GO BRUINS.

formerly bruinhoo

by Patroclus on Jun 12, 2010 6:59 PM PDT up reply actions

Most likely.

It still seems a bit shady to pull. Hernandez at least loses a whole year of eligibility with this, right?

It’d be similar to some schools ending their winter quarter right before the NCAA Tournament in basketball, and getting someone who was ineligible all winter to suddenly play in the tourney. (Has that actually ever happened?)

by BruinKid on Jun 12, 2010 7:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Pretty much

By participating in the tourney, he can’t take this as a redshirt year. Not aware of that happening in the tourney – I think the scheduling works just right to keep that from happening – though I imagine it may be an issue with Football and bowl games.

formerly bruinhoo

by Patroclus on Jun 12, 2010 7:05 PM PDT up reply actions

Winter Quarter ends right around the Final Four

The schedule might line up just right on occasion. There seems to be more value to redshirting in basketball though, with less players getting drafted and leaving early.

by SuperBruinMan on Jun 12, 2010 7:13 PM PDT up reply actions

It seems like...

those with academic issues in football don’t return for bowl games, even though they take place after fall grades have been entered in the system. But with football, I guess one single player probably doesn’t make that much of an impact enough to burn a whole year on just the bowl game.

I remember Tom Osborne letting Lawrence Phillips back for their bowl game for the national championship, but that was after Phillips had beaten up his girlfriend, and not academics-related.

With basketball, we’ve had players with academic problems in the past, but I can’t ever remember any one of them being ineligible during the season, and then coming BACK to play in the Sweet 16 or Final Four after Winter Quarter was over. We just knew they were done for the year, and that was that.

He’s not used to pitching this many innings, is he?

Incredible stuff all year from the Bruins.

We’re gonna have to get 4 outs to end this one.

He was out

He was off the bag. Caught it. Tagged the bag before the runner hit first.

That RF error

Not the type of thing that normally has Fullerton.

Programming Question

ESPN switched with no post game.

Is it really a funny car if someone gets killed?

by KaponoMagic on Jun 12, 2010 8:23 PM PDT reply actions

7pm LA time, correct?

Thanks to my Bruin family for the updates. BN kicks ass over any other sports blog I’ve seen.

Never had a picture.

That’s why I’m so grateful for the play-by-play here.

Yes. 7pm.

No idea if ESPN2 will carry it nationwide, though.

by BruinKid on Jun 12, 2010 8:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Maybe at least the channelsurfing.net feed

will have it. If nothing else, I can rely on BN again like tonight. Would much rather have video along with being on BN, but great to have play-by-play and analysis here.

And one more day to make money...

A couple hundred thousand more dollars will be raised for the athletic department by the extra game… way to go Bruins.

Anybody know if a trip to the CWS means extra revenue, similar to bowl games in FB?

It actually worked

In the top of the 10th, as the ball was popped into right field, I do my usual routine of screaming “DROP IT”

And he actually did!

We’re looking over our dead dog, Rover,

That we overran tonight (all right!)
One leg is broken, the other is bent,
And in his head, there’s a great big dent.
No need explaining the parts remaining
Are scattered all over the field (next page).
We’re looking over our dead dog, Rover,
That we overran tonight!

Way to go Bruin baseball team!
