2010 World Cup Open Thread Rooting For UCLA|USA: Beat Slovenia
Thank you Sasha Vujacic for knocking down those clutch FTs last night. This morning though he is on the other team - as his Slovenia is taking on the Red, White and Blue in Johannesburg. Slovenia is at the top of our group after getting a late goal (a gift really) against an undermanned Algeria team playing with 10 dudes. Speaking of gifts, that's how we got a tie in our hyped match against England.
While the tie with England was kind of a bonus, since we were huge underdogs, we can really help our chances to advance if we can get out win victory against Slovenians. This is a huge game for both teams. Apparently Slovenians have already been doing some trash talking predicting victory. Tim Howard is nursing a rib injury, but he should ready to go.
The match will get started around 7 am PST/10 am EST on ESPN. Here is coverage from SBN and ESPN. Let's hope the US team led by Captain Bocanegra (a Bruin) can bring home a victory. GO USA!
GO BRUINS.

If I were to guess the biggest reason
World Cup Soccer isn’t bigger in the US, it would be the number of tied games. Americans just don’t like games without a winner and loser.
The other major contributor of course is we don’t have an elite team, even though we are getting better.

NCAA football did until about 10 years ago
and it was changed because it was unpopular.
You can still draw in Hockey, but Hockey is not a particularly popular sport.
You can still tie in NFL football, but that is after you go through an extra quarter of sudden death football and nobody scores. It only happens once every few years.

We got lucky when Green blew it in the first game
But we got unlucky when the ref blew it in the second game.
The ref
just expected some kind of foul on that free kick, so he blew his whistle. That is literally the reason. If anything, it was a penalty, the way Bradley was being bearhugged by that Slovenian defender. This is one of the biggest world cup shams I have ever seen. I doubt this ref will be allowed to work a WC game again, at least not after the first round.
But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
This isn't new in the World Cup
Every four years, FIFA brings several refs from small countries for representation and “equality’s” sake. The problem is that they do not ref matches of the quality and speed of the World Cup so when they get to the World Cup, they’re incredibly overwhelmed.

I'm not sure thats the case
Yes, he’s from a very small country (Mali). But he’s been refereeing African international matches for 17 years and was the center for the last African Nations Cup final. He just really f&*(% up this one.
African refereeing is awful
They don’t referee enough quality matches consistently and are widely panned as not good enough. Both the South African and Egyptian media were blasting not just today’s referee, but African referees in general today because they’re so often overwhelmed at the World Cup.
It wasn’t as if the call on Edu was it. He was horrendous all match long and the US benefited from some of it too. I think Slovenia got the better of the poor refereeing, but it was terrible from the beginning.

I am in no way defending this guy
I lived in Africa for a while and saw firsthand how bad the refereeing was. But there is no way that FIFA would ever stop using refs from an entire continent (especially when its the home continent for the games) and sadly (and scary) this guy is apparently regarded as one of the top ones they have.
Algeria 0 England 0
That was probably the best possible outcome for us.
As I was telling a friend
Half the British population is grumbling while sipping tea and eating crumpits.
The other half are futbol hooligans looking for any French person to punch in the face out of frustration.
Where's the 15%
that roots against England?
