UCLA Baseball Takes On Florida In Omaha
Well we meet the Gators again. Painfully for us they got us in hoops TWICE. We partially returned the favor this year by pummeling them in the women's college world series just few weeks ago. Now the UCLA baseball team (48-14) gets another shot on behalf of Bruin Nation when they take on the Florida Gators (47-15) in Ryan's House (that's what I will refer to the Rosenblatt here on BN) tonight in Omaha.
We should all know the storylines by now. Cody Regis, Adrian Williams et al. will simply have to step up in the absence of no. 5 (Tyler Rahmatulla), who has been the spark plug for our offense in recent weeks. They have dealt with adversity all season (responding to a mid-season.500 ball funk after getting their 22 game win streak snapped and to the injury of Cody Keefer). Hopefully they can do it again to get the baseball program's first every win ... at Ryan's House.
Trevor Bauer and his dirty, classic Bruin cap gets the start tonight (staying on his season long rhythm of Saturday starts). Gators will throw a southpaw - Alex Panteliodis - with impressive stats (11-2, 3.26) against the Bruins. The first pitch is scheduled for this evening at 4:00 pm PST (ESPN). You can also follow along with GameTracker or get updates on Ryan's UCLA baseball twitter. So might as well thread this as our game thread with updates, thoughts, analysis and anything else.
GO BRUINS.

This from a Tennessee fan...
Beat the Gators. My dislike of them transcends conferences.
To Strive, To Seek, To Find, and Not to Yield.
Oh yes.
And, I still haven’t ruled out the possibility of traveling to the UCLA/U$C game to lend my fandom out for one game. Besides, I have a certain autographed football to return to Kiffykins — and by return I mean throw it at him.
To Strive, To Seek, To Find, and Not to Yield.
Yeah, I was just heartbroken...err..cough...too. much. sarcasm.......HAHAHAHA
However, knowing there may be the possibility that Dooley takes the Vols to a bowl game before Kiffin takes his cheat squad to one is a great consolation prize.
To Strive, To Seek, To Find, and Not to Yield.
"Possibility"?
You’re too modest, mike2ray. Speaking as someone who spent his formative years watching his alma mater coached by a Dooley, I can assure you that Derek Dooley will take Tennessee to a bowl game before Lane Kiffin takes the Trojans to one. I believe the Volunteers will be bowl-bound this year, and they certainly will be next year.
Go 'Dawgs!
17th time this year
He’ll wear any pitch if you throw it close enough to him.

Bunt sacrifice
Niko on third, Amaral on 2nd, one out
Giovinazzo strikes out
1-0 UCLA, Mid 1st. 2 LOB.
That was just DUMB!!!
Bunt your cleanup hitter with runners on the corner??? Come on Savage. Stay out of the game and let the players play!!
Rosenblatt is bigger all the way around
The ball flies better there though. It can turn into a homer haven.

Why isn't the Florida coach
bunting the middle of the lineup hitters? Sorry, I couldn’t resist.
Awesome catch by Amaral to save a run
End 1st, 2-1 Florida
By the way, I trust this goes without saying . . .
. . . coming from a Georgia fan, but, whenever UCLA faces Florida in any sport, all I can say is: “Go Bruins!”
Go 'Dawgs!
The safety squeeze..
still leaving a bad taste in my mouth.
He's not retired...THANK YOU!
is there any news on what school
those neutral omaha fans picked up as their team for the CWS, i remember reading they chose UCLA last time they were here
William Doolittle at your service, a.k.a. will do.
JUST foul for Rodriguez
Really close to a HR
Ground ball misplayed
Florida’s leadoff hitter gets to first
Bad throw by Rodriguez
Would have caught the runner at 2nd, but it goes into CF and the runner gets to third
Mojo management
At its best

Alright, what the hell was that thing
yall pitcher knows some voodoo sha’
Managing Editor/Chief Lackey-And The Valley Shook
no idea
looked like some wild voodoo thing to me too.. but if it keeps working for us, use it!!
Out of respect for one of the teams that whupped our ass AND saved Rosenblatts last year from a Mike Gillespie apperance
im pulling for the bruins today from home, but when i get out there for the final 3, I’m starting the SEC! SEC! SEC! chant.
Managing Editor/Chief Lackey-And The Valley Shook
You're going, PodKATT?
Good for you, man. My son is seven, and, when he gets a little older, I’m planning on taking him to Omaha. (One of the years Georgia is there, though.)
I promised the Clemson fans I’d pull for them in the College World Series, but, if the Gamecocks get past the Tigers, I’ll let conference pride cause me to cheer for South Carolina. Rooting for Florida simply isn’t something of which I’m capable, unless they’re playing a Big Ten team in a bowl game or Auburn.
I hate Auburn.
Go 'Dawgs!
You bet
No way I’m missing the last games in the ’Blatt. LSU or no, I booked this trip months ago.
Managing Editor/Chief Lackey-And The Valley Shook
Good for you.
Is this a one-time thing, or do you plan to make the trip in future years? If you plan to go again, hopefully we’ll be able to meet up some year when we’re both there.
Go 'Dawgs!
I hope so
My “other job” really only allows for one good trip a year. Next year I’m booked for part 2 of the LSU/WVU home-and-home, but more than likely i’ll be back the following year.
Managing Editor/Chief Lackey-And The Valley Shook
argh, I've got a pre-planned family event, wont have the TV anymore
but let’s go Bruins, keep it up, I’ll be following form my phone!

Just checking in after an afternoon with the grandson...
Go Bruins…and stay hot, Bauer!
My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing $C.
Stand up double by Niko
Runners at 2nd and 3rd, 1 out
Walk after being down 0-2 by Amaral (Great patience)
Runners on the corners, 1 out
maybe I spoke too soon...
He gets a huge K
Easy money and faithless women, red-eye whiskey for the pain...
Espy K
bases loaded, 2 out. Don’t waste this!
I Love an ump who makes sure you can hear him in the cheap seats

No, but odds are he'll never call a game again in WC
Likely a linesman or sub official.

5-2 UCLA, mid 4th
3 LOB (Total of 6 in innings)
Can't call it a ball if the batter swings!

I goofed..wasn't that Rodriguez on the single?
My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing $C.
You take one from us, we take 2 from you...
that’s the Bruin way.
My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing $C.
Rodriguez looked like a train running to third..
I’d hate to be a catcher facing him on a run home.
My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing $C.
Ground out
Mid 5th, 7-3 UCLA
Halfway done, 2:14 into the game
No, it's not you
I’m waiting for Mike Patrick to ask what went wrong with Britney Spears.
I keep worrying
that Lee Humphrey’s going to come off the bench to hit a couple threes.

Florida's wildness
4 HBP’s, 3 wild pitches and a passed ball by Florida’s pitchers/catcher tonight
formerly bruinhoo
"and a partridge in a pear tree"
LOL, ESPN commenting on all of Florida’s miscues with the 4 HBP. :-)
How many more runs
until the Just Like Softball chant?
Nice catch
That sure got there quickly
1 down
Another easy K for Bauer's 9th in 6 innings
End 6, 8-3 Bruins
With his 2 strike outs in the 6th
Bauer now had 150 on the year, tying the UCLA single-season record.

No miracle catch that time
Rodriguez with a standup double
Ouch.
That ball hit Gallego in the face, but hit the bat first for a foul? Yeah, replay shows it.
Amaral down the first base line
Rodriguez scores, Niko to third
9-3 UCLA
Rodriguez is slooooooooooooooooow
Bobo Morgan might outrun him.
Well I think this answers the age-old question
SEC: Great defenses, or really poor offenses ;)
Double play to end the inning 5-4-3
9-3 Bruins, mid 7
Bauer should be on a short leash here
I notice a couple arms up in the pen.
He's playing good now...
but remembering the 9th against LSU…if he starts to wobble, it’ll go ugly quick.
My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing $C.
Most single season strikeouts for a UCLA pitcher
Bauer with his 151st.
Hope ESPN...
can interview Bauer postgame before they cut away to Baseball Tonight/SportsCenter.
They're doing a pretty good job of making Trevor Bauer . . .
. . . seem Bill “Spaceman” Lee or Mark “The Bird” Fidrych weird, but, as long as he continues to get Gators out, I’m all for him continuing to do whatever he needs to do to keep that mojo working.
That said, I agree with you about him being on a short leash, Raisin. Hopefully, he makes it through the seventh before hitting the showers.
Go 'Dawgs!

K to end the inning!
Think that’s 129 or 130 pitches for him.
11th K for Bauer
152 on the season. Record!
back in time for the final two
looks as though Bauer has been excellent!
William Doolittle at your service, a.k.a. will do.
Great game for Bauer
Especially after a rough first inning.
Sons of Westwood playing...
Uribe scores on a RBI single.
My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing $C.
And if we win, next game is Friday
If we lose, elimination game on Wednesday
Something tells me if we play TCU we'll have to have nitroglycerin.
My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing $C.
I would think that you are probably correct.
They are playing at the top of their game.
I will have mine ready, just in case. Oh and my defibrillator.
I wouldn't jinx y'all by saying it was in the bag . . .
. . . but I have to say a seven-run lead with an inning to go appears to be an advantageous position in which to be.
Go 'Dawgs!

Can you hang out w us in game threads rest of the way?
by Nestor on Jun 19, 2010 7:35 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
Ha, ha!
I’ll definitely do my best . . . and (although I’d be rooting for any team that was playing the Gators) I’ve pretty much made the Bruins “my team” in this CWS bracket, so I’ll be able to come back here and root for UCLA conscientiously at least through (and likely including) the finals.
Thanks for the invitation, Nestor. I am much obliged.
Go 'Dawgs!
SEC and BN
The relationships we have been building w SECOND blogs have been pretty awesome. RTR is great. We have had great times w ATVS and RTT (even when they had Hello Kiffin). Of course DS and BN go way back. You guys always have an open invitation here. Its just fun.

Same request to you as well. BTW Kyle … On this topic we have sons of two major leaguers – Rich Amaral and Mike Gallego – playing for the blue and gold tonight.

Cool!
Good to know.
Earlier in the year, Georgia was playing Vanderbilt when the Commodores sent in Yazstremski as a late-inning substitution. I thought, “There’s no way that’s a coincidence!” It wasn’t; he’s Carl’s grandson.
Go 'Dawgs!
Called K for Amaral.
Think the ump just wants to go home.
High draft choices and all-Americans
And we’re beating the crap out of them. That so-called all-American freshman looked slower than Rodriguez running to first. Either they’re way overrated or some scouts need to rethink their approaches.
So tired of Patrick and Ventura. He’s a better boulevard than a commentator.
Drop for a base hit in shallow center
Hold to third
Uh, actually, Espy.
Damn, announcers said Dunlap. Yet another mistake for Patrick & Ventura.
The LSU game that was called a trunk hat...
because you throw it in the trunk of the car instead of the seat.
My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing $C.
And we go to the bottom of the 9th
only an 8 run cushion
Walk by Goeddel
Setting up the game-ending double play, obviously
Daniel Pigott pinch-hitting for his brother Jonathan.
Heh, haven’t seen that before.
At the risk of sounding like Mike Patrick asking about Britney Spears . . .
. . . does John Savage handle the duties of pitching coach personally?
The Diamond Dogs’ David Perno recently fired Georgia’s pitching coach and put himself in charge of the pitchers. I’m debating whether that was a good move.
Go 'Dawgs!
I believe so
Savage is the pitching guru while Van Derhook handles the hitting.
