UCLA Looks For Its Second Win In Omaha Against Powerful TCU
We have had lot of "firsts" this season. We set a team record in Ws and win streaks. We hosted our first super regional at the Jack. We got over the dreaded "Fullerton hump" during the super regionals. Then on Saturday night with the whole nation watching (and apparently friends from all over the SEC cheering in our game thread) we got our first CWS win over the powerful Gators. UCLA baseball (49-14) will look to keep the magic going tonight against the loaded TCU Horned Frogs (52-12).
Beau Amaral, Niko Gallego, Cody Regis, and the entire team stepped up in the absence of Tyler Rahmatulla. Those guys will have to keep it going and turn their intensity up to whole another level to take on a TCU team which has been making its own history in the diamond. Hopefully our guys will come up with enough offense to get us one win from the championship series.
The other super soph pitching ace - Gerrit Cole - will get the start tonight. TCU will send their own stud - right-hander Kyle Winkler (12-1, 2.84) - to take on the Bruins. The first pitch is scheduled for this evening at 6:00 pm PST. You can also follow along with GameTracker or get updates on Ryan's UCLA baseball twitter. So might as well thread this as our game thread with updates, thoughts, analysis and anything else.
GO BRUINS.

Am I evil for wanting a UCLA v. USC final?
My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing $C.
Not so sure TCU is "powerful" . . .
but TCU is streaking right now. Was Texas the only no. 1 seed not to make it to Omaha? That’s what I thought I heard one of the [dreadful] TV announcers say during the FL – FL ST game this afternoon. But it’s true that UCLA and ASU are the only national seeds left. So, how can that be?
Bleeding powderkeg blue and gold for 55 years. Go Bruins!
sorta similar to
NCAA basketball tournament I suppose. Once you reach a point where your playing on all cylinders you can throw the seeds out.
by westwood12003 on Jun 21, 2010 5:54 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
There are 8 national seeds, but 16 no. 1 seeds.
Only three national seeds made it to Omaha (ASU, UCLA, Florida). Four teams were number one seeds that were not national seeds (i.e. ranked between 9 and 16 according to the selection committee). Clemson is the only one that got to Omaha that was not a number one seed.
For example
CSU Fullerton was also a #1 seed, so if we had lost to them, they would still be a 1 seed in Omaha
Has there ever been a player better than Detlef Schrempf?

The lack of a #1 seed...
doesn’t seem to be hurting Clemson at all so far. Who thought they’d have taken down ASU this morning?

Com'on Boys
Caught part of Gators game in an airport and had to wait on touchdown for the result. Easier on the nerves.
Just tweeted
that there’s no surprises with the line up changes. Amaral has led off versus right-handed pitchers all year so seeing him first and Gallego second is expected. Uribe has also had a more prominent role in the lineup versus righties so him in the clean up spot is on spot. Same goes for Gelalich coming in for Krill, giving the Bruins another left-handed bat.
Savage is pretty much sticking with the philosophy that got him here.

92 pitches for Cole, who stays in.
Announcers note the bottom of the lineup coming up hasn’t gotten a hit yet.
Pretty sure this is the first time they've noted anything
not related to the Yankees or hats
Coles had some great D behind him...
lets get that double play
My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing $C.
Great throw....
definitely would’ve got him!
IT'S OK GUYS
Lets rally and put up 5 more in the bottom

I think they've figured Gerritt out...
b/c he’s still throwing 97 mph heaters….
We finish this and Cole is still the winner.

No problem. We’ve got this. Great job tonight Garrett. Hats off to you. Go bruins!

We are going to go away quietly and screw it up w a 1,2, 3 inning right here. Oh well it was fun while it lasted.

Just in time, N

No kidding
(As I limp to the freezer for my icepack all hopped up in percocets). Not impressed at all. We will end up playing in Ryan’s house on wed if keep this up.

You may have covered this but… is it a coincidence that the stadium is named after you..

thank you
Maybe its because I see the last name here everyday. LOL

Ground rule double for Amaral
Who is 6 for 7 in Omaha
Bounced out is a double
on the fly is an HR

This ain't cricket, son
We don’t give points for merely making the boundary.
:)
Ball gets away from the pitcher
Amaral to third
It's the small things...
like passed balls and the such!
Best catcher in college?
pfffttt…
just kidding
That was some clever special effects
No way Holaday made a mistake.

The coach of the year is taking out his reliever who's throwing a great game. Is he tired?

Mistake I think. Unless the BP doesn't have it tonight.

Come on Bruins!
Punch these rednecks in their smokeless tobacco holes!!

Er... ah...
“rednecks” ends at the TX/LA border. ;-)
you're right
past that, the correct term is coonass
Managing Editor/Chief Lackey-And The Valley Shook
sorry.
not sure if the ‘rednecks’ or ‘smokeless tobacco holes’ was the offending phrase, but sorry!
:)
He did hit 97 MPH last inning. But they're starting to hit him.

How many Ks is Cole from ther UCLA record?
Bleeding powderkeg blue and gold for 55 years. Go Bruins!
55 years?
So does that mean you JUST missed the ’54 championship year?
That was my first year. I haven't changed my sig because I forgot how to do it.
I was out on the field for the UCLA-USC game and saw Red Sanders. My Dad was UCLA ’37. (Still alive and going strong at 93. And driving — WATCH OUT!)
Bleeding powderkeg blue and gold for 55 years. Go Bruins!
F'ing sweet!
Does it appear that the disdain for all things SUC diminishes after 5 or 6 decades?
All seriousness, great story! I hope to be the first of many Bruin alums..!!

Good job Cole
You can catch Bauer in the championship round
Well, that's why Savage is the MGR and I'm just an old alum.

Mike Patrick: "And that'll be it for Gerrit Cole."
“No wait, he’s staying in.”
Just call the game, Nostradamus.
If a palyer is drafted, but not by the Yankees...
does an ESPN announcer make a sound (about it)?

Yes
because in being drafted by the Orioles, Klein can play the Yankees.

I'd like TCU to knock out ASU. Too bad they're in the other bracket.

I think we'll see a rematch Friday
That will be fun.
I just gotta..
..serve up one crap sandwich on this thread: aside from being a disgraceful homer, the announcer (not Herscheiser) sucked fetid swamp water. And if they had run one more replay of that foul ball catch the TCU right fielder made, I woulda made a meal of my .38’s muzzle.
..of course, when you’ve only got ZERO runs, ONE hit, and EIGHT K’s going into the 7th, then that was your highlight film.
God, it's great to be a Bruin!
Let's have a 24 inning game now between TCU and FL ST
