UCLA Looks For Its Second Win In Omaha Against Powerful TCU

Beau Amaral and his team-mates will look to methodically chip away against TCU. Photo Credit: Brad Williams (UCLA Athletics)

We have had lot of "firsts" this season. We set a team record in Ws and win streaks. We hosted our first super regional at the Jack. We got over the dreaded "Fullerton hump" during the super regionals. Then on Saturday night with the whole nation watching (and apparently friends from all over the SEC cheering in our game thread) we got our first CWS win over the powerful Gators. UCLA baseball (49-14) will look to keep the magic going tonight against the loaded TCU Horned Frogs (52-12).

Beau Amaral, Niko Gallego, Cody Regis, and the entire team stepped up in the absence of Tyler Rahmatulla. Those guys will have to keep it going and turn their intensity up to whole another level to take on a TCU team which has been making its own history in the diamond. Hopefully our guys will come up with enough offense to get us one win from the championship series.

The other super soph pitching ace - Gerrit Cole - will get the start tonight. TCU will send their own stud - right-hander Kyle Winkler (12-1, 2.84) - to take on the Bruins. The first pitch is scheduled for this evening at 6:00 pm PST. You can also follow along with GameTracker or get updates on Ryan's UCLA baseball twitter. So might as well thread this as our game thread with updates, thoughts, analysis and anything else.

GO BRUINS.

ASU and UCLA

are now the only national seeds left.

by bruinhoya on Jun 21, 2010 5:36 PM PDT reply actions

Not so sure TCU is "powerful" . . .

but TCU is streaking right now. Was Texas the only no. 1 seed not to make it to Omaha? That’s what I thought I heard one of the [dreadful] TV announcers say during the FL – FL ST game this afternoon. But it’s true that UCLA and ASU are the only national seeds left. So, how can that be?

sorta similar to

NCAA basketball tournament I suppose. Once you reach a point where your playing on all cylinders you can throw the seeds out.

by westwood12003 on Jun 21, 2010 5:54 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

There are 8 national seeds, but 16 no. 1 seeds.

Only three national seeds made it to Omaha (ASU, UCLA, Florida). Four teams were number one seeds that were not national seeds (i.e. ranked between 9 and 16 according to the selection committee). Clemson is the only one that got to Omaha that was not a number one seed.

by UCLA Band ' on Jun 21, 2010 6:03 PM PDT up reply actions

For example

CSU Fullerton was also a #1 seed, so if we had lost to them, they would still be a 1 seed in Omaha

Has there ever been a player better than Detlef Schrempf?

by bucknellbruin on Jun 21, 2010 6:14 PM PDT up reply actions

The lack of a #1 seed...

doesn’t seem to be hurting Clemson at all so far. Who thought they’d have taken down ASU this morning?

Just tweeted

that there’s no surprises with the line up changes. Amaral has led off versus right-handed pitchers all year so seeing him first and Gallego second is expected. Uribe has also had a more prominent role in the lineup versus righties so him in the clean up spot is on spot. Same goes for Gelalich coming in for Krill, giving the Bruins another left-handed bat.

Savage is pretty much sticking with the philosophy that got him here.

When high school guys are signed, they usually play a short season rookie ball for the end of the summer. They come back the next season playing more rookie ball or Low A ball.

The college guys usually start at High A ball or if they’re advanced, right at AA.

Personally, I’d have given Coach of the Year to Horton at Oregon or Penders at UConn. Both were incredible. I’d have had Savage and Esmay from Arizona St. numbers three and four.
