Coach John R. Wooden's Memorial Service - TODAY - Online/Offline Viewing Info.
Please recommend this post as soon as you read it so that is readily viewable on Saturday morning at the very top:
The John Wooden Memorial Service is scheduled to begin today at 11 a.m. PST.
Approximately 6,000 seats in Pauley Pavilion’s middle and upper levels will be available to the public on a general admission basis. The doors to Pauley Pavilion will open at 9 a.m. Attendees will enter through the Intramural Field. The entrance to the IM Field will be from the east at Wilson Plaza between the John Wooden Center and the North Athletic Field.
Floor seats in Pauley Pavilion will be reserved for the Wooden family, Bruin basketball players and coaches, as well as other designated guests. It's expected to last about 90 minutes.
For those not admitted to Pauley Pavilion, the service will be shown live on two video boards in Drake Stadium.
For those who cannot get down to Westwood today, Prime Ticket will televise the service in Los Angeles, and is providing the livestream version right here. Again, click on this link to watch it live if you don't have Prime Ticket or don't live in LA.
GO BRUINS.

i miss you Coach
Never personally knew you. Entered UCLA the year after you retired. But your influence is and was all around me.
Wish I could attend but I am out of the country.

Why, Oh Why
Wouldn’t Fox just broadcast this nationwide for those of us who have Prime, but live outside the L.A. area? There is absolutely nothing scheduled on this channel, anyway. I just don’t get it.

Good point, except
From my own selfish standpoint, there was simply no way for me to travel to CA right now….

Well same here
But UCLA family had an obligation to pack the house in Coach’s Honor today. Looks like we have let him down.
I Sincerely Hope
They come pouring in now, because a sparse turnout for Coach will be unforgiveable.

It was to dark for me to get anything on my camera (photos). So sorry.
It was good to see so many players there, that didn’t even play for coach (Barnes, Hollins, RW, I’m sure there were others, but it was hard to see everyone in the dim lighting.).
Go Bruins!
Couldn't they have changed the time?
This is no excuse (mine is that I’m in the Philly area and couldn’t get there), but when they realized the conflict with the World Cup and the CWS, they should have pushed it back to 2 or 3 PDT. This isn’t just any World Cup match, and the Bruin baseball team needs our love, too. I’ll have the service on my laptop, and I called my 96-year-old mom, a diehard Bruins/Wooden fan who lives in Santa Monica, to make sure she’d be watching. If she had the strength, I’m sure she would have been there.
Timing is not a legit excuse
Everyone could have marked their calendar. Not freaking hard to do considering we knew about this 2 weeks ago. Your Mom is a different story but alumnis like us, who live in Southern California and students, have no excuses if they are in Southern California today.
ultra embarrassing
There seem to be more VIPs seated on the floor and in the stands than general seats. While they could have ticketed this, it would have created an unwanted market for tickets. Embarrassing nonetheless.

Forget BBall game and football games
you’d think the one time that UCLA alums and fans would make any event it would be this one. I just don’t understand how there are thousands of students only a walk from a FREE! event that didn’t come.
RESCUING DANCE MUSIC FROM THE BLAHS
Well to be fair
Students are not on campus because school is out. Still there is no excuse for this pathetic showing.
Yes it was. And once the lights went out and everything was started one didn't noice the sparse crowd.
Fortunately, the entire floor and bleacher (sides) sections were filled with invited guests. That’s a lot of invited guests. Besides Bruins, also saw Jerry West and Gene Keedy (sp?). I’m sure there were so many more. The floor and side were so crowded that it was hard to find people.
Go Bruins!
Feed?
I lost the feed (for the 3rd time) for good about 1:40. I think the service was just about over. Was there much else that we missed?

What a wonderful video tribute to John #Wooden with pictures of family. Too bad there were so many empty seats at Pauley Pavilion at #UCLA.
I know 2 people who were going to come but were freaked out by thinking they needed to get there by 5am if they had any chance of getting in.
I can understand that, I think the emails coming out of ucla kind of scared people off. I got there very early, but for others, the idea of waiting outside for 4 hours and then inside for 2 was too much, especially if they had children or were older. I think ticketing it somehow would have been good. Very few older folk can “camp” like that. Trying to find a bathroom until 8 am was a problem! If not ticketing, then giving out numbers or something so that people could find somewhere comfortable to wait.
Go Bruins!

I was there
Seems that someone was planning for a big crowd even if it didn’t materialize. The way UCLA had things laid out, you’d think it was for a special concert featuring Justin Beiber and the cast of Twilight. Security was everywhere even before you got inside, and they made everyone loop around a long security line behind the Wooden Center just to gain entry.
I too feel that the school went overboard in their warnings about the event – once again, they demonstrated a complete tone-deafness in regards to marketing and public relations.
I was impressed by some of the younger Bruins who were in attendance. At one point before the service began, I spotted Tyus Edney, Russell Westbrook and Kevin Love chatting together. Great to see that these young guys took time out of their busy schedules to pay their respects to Coach.
I feel sorry for anyone who was spooked away. It was really a special event to attend in person.
It was wonderfully done
I too was discouraged by the sparse attendance, I didn’t think I’d get into Pauley at all. But we arrived at 9, were ushered in, and the place never filled up much more until it all started at 11. All of us who had been guided into the top rows of the first sections were allowed to sit closer before it started.
But once underway, it was heartfelt, well said, and incredibly inspiring. Keith Erickson, Jamaal, and Kareem all spoke, and all teared up recalling Coach’s love. There were a lot of funny stories about Coach’s teasing sense of humor. Jamaal said then when he was selected for the NBA, reporters asked Coach whether Jamaal could withstand the rigor of the NBA, and he replied “You don’t have to worry about Keith pulling a muscle, because he doesn’t have any muscles to pull.” Jamaal also told a great story about Coach getting his first good look at Jamaal’s bizarre shooting form, asking him to repeat it again and again, asking numerous questions about it, and then finally deciding that Jamaal should be allowed his individuality.
I could see Bill Walton, who brought along his own special high backed chair, laughing along with the many Walton stories that were told. I believe Keith Erickson noted that when Walton came to visit Coach near the end, Coach looked up at him and said with a twinkle in his eye: “I thought I’d finished with you.”
Vin Scully, on video, was his usual eloquent self, and Al Michaels did a wonderful job as MC. Coach’s pastor had us all roll up our programs Wooden-style for a salute toward heaven, and then it closed with a terrific 20 minutes video concluding with a photgraph of Coach waving a visitor goodbye from the balcony of the “Mansion on Margate.”
It was a shame that more people didn’t show up, but we all left gratified, inspired, hearts full of UCLA feeling and renewed intent to live up to Coach’s example.
I was there as well
Got up at 4:00 a.m., as I was also scared about not getting into Pauley – and when there’s no traffic, UCLA is only 20 minutes from my house in the Valley. Got there at 5:00 a.m. and was glad I was among the first to queue up, but the huge crowds did not materialize. However, the faithful who were there will tell you that all those who were absent missed something extraordinarily special (you don’t get the same feeling while watching it on tv). I just tried to forget about all those empty seats and concentrate on all the beautiful words that were said. As many have already noted, school was out for summer, so we couldn’t depend on the dorm dwellers to fill the seats, but I was still ashamed at the poor attendance. This was Coach, for God’s sake! If we can’t make a good show of support for him and his family, then what are we?
Still and all, a beautiful service for an extraordinary human being. You shoulda been there.
Great post
I was there, too. I dragged my butt out of bed after four hours of sleep, because it was important for me to be there for Coach. My tiredness was completely forgotten once the service was underway. What a moving and inspirational experience. There were so many wonderful tributes and remembrances. I got especially teary during Keith Erickson’s story about visiting Coach at his condo. I loved the selections of Coach’s favorite songs that played as we entered the arena. The video with Coach speaking in his own words was the perfect conclusion to an event was pure class all the way. I left with such a warm, positive feeling in my heart.
I only wish more had been there to experience it in person. I agree with the sentiment that UCLA might have freaked out some people with the warnings about not camping out before 5:00 a.m. and overflow at Drake Stadium. Still, if I can camp out for concert tickets and movies, it was nothing to wait in line a few hours to pay tribute to a man who has inspired me so much.

As seen from the crowd, the last two minutes of UCLA vs. Arizona. Hopefully gives those who were not able to attend an idea of what it was like inside "Old" Pauley for the last time.](http://cdn2.sbnation.com/fan_shot_images/180811/0_small.jpg)
