UCLA Takes On USC In The Final Championship Series In Omaha

Dean Espy and his Bruins will try to lock in again tonight. Photo Credit: Brad Williams (UCLA Athletics)

Here we go.  A battle royal between UCLA (51-15) and USC (52-16) for the ultimate prize in college baseball. We wouldn't want it any other way. The incredible baseball season for UCLA continues as the Bruins will take the field as designated home team in just about half an hour in the final series ever to be played at Ryan's House in Omaha.

As always the regular BN members should be familiar with all the storylines around this game by now.  Bruins will take the field behind one of their three aces: Gerrit Cole. At the time I write this post,  it is unclear who USC will go with among Blake Cooper (12-2), Tyler Webb (3-2) and Jay Brown (3-0). Whoever takes the mound, the Bruins will have a battle. They will need to stay locked in the same manner they have done all through this season despite experiencing adversity.

The first pitch is scheduled for this evening at 4:30 pm PST (ESPN). You can also follow along with GameTracker or get updates on Ryan's UCLA baseball twitter. So might as well thread this as our game thread with updates, thoughts, analysis and anything else.

GO BRUINS.

Pre-game questions

1) Who will score the Bruins’ first run?
2) How many strikeouts will Gerrit Cole get?
3) How many times with the announcers mention the Yankees during the telecast?

I'm with you on Mike Patrick.

You may not remember this, but, at the start of the Bulldogs’ first overtime possession in the 2007 Georgia-Alabama game, Patrick turned to Todd Blackledge and, out of absolutely nowhere, asked: “What is Britney [Spears] doing with her life?”

Absolutely maddening.

slow breaking ball...hit near the handle..

Sorry, but this is painful.

The guys don’t look prepared for this type of pitcher. Obviously the defense has been awful and Cole is having an off night.

this whole week is helping recruiting.

Cole has to be steaming right now. With wood bats in these kids hands, we would see 7 or 8 broken bats against Cole right now.

by UCLADodger32 on Jun 28, 2010 6:32 PM PDT reply actions

This will end when he strikes some people out

Cole is not pitching a good game and the announcers don’t get it.

We will need to get a running start in the bottom of this one.

Their pitcher is not overwhelming. Our hitting is underwhelming.

Sloppy fielding.

If it's any consolation . . .

. . . Georgia won the first game of the College World Series finals two years ago, then went on to lose the next two games to Fresno State.

It hurts me to have to say that—-it’s been all downhill ever since for Bulldog athletics—-but an opening game loss by a California team to an SEC East opponent in the CWS finals is far from fatal.

3 for sure, and most of 1

I doubt we were unprepared. We’ve had opportunities to make this much closer than it is. We’re getting no breaks, and giving them plenty. Credit them for making so much out of their opportunities.

And we still have a couple at bats left. Let’s see…

and haven’t lost 2 games out of 3 since Fullerton/Wazzu before the tourney… (haven’t lost to the same team 2 out of 3 since ASU sweep)

We’ll win tomorrow and I’ll put my money on Bauer on Wednesday.

Tough loss, y'all . . .

. . . but remember what I said:

Two years ago, an SEC East team started out 1-0 against a team from California in the College World Series finals.

I still haven’t recovered from this fact, but the team that started out 0-1 won the next two and took home the national championship trophy.

Go Bruins!

And hey, the Bruins were down 1-0 in a best 2 out of 3 series against Fullerton and the Bruins came out on top in the series. So hopefully our Bruins give their best effort tomorrow.
