UCLA Baseball Starts Second Season Against Kent State

Steve Rodriguez and co. will look to build on Bruins' regular season success tonight at JRS. Photo Credit: Art

Well here we go. UCLA baseball's (43-13) second season start tonight. The number 1 seeded Bruins are playing hosts in a baseball regional for the first time since 1986, as they take on number 4 seeded Kent State (39-23) Golden Flashes.  Bruins are also the no. 6 national seed in this season's tournament, which marks the first time Bruins have ever earned one of the national seeds.

Bruins have of course established all kinds of school record this season. We have every reason to feel good about our program heading in the right direction under Coach John Savage, who also happened to be the architect of one of the other programs in this Los Angeles Regional (UCI). While this year's Bruins' team anchored by young underclassmen such as Gerrit Cole (tonight's starter), Trevor Bauer, Tyler Rahmatulla, Dean Espy, Beau Amaral, Cody Keefer and Cody Regis (along with seniors to be Niko Gallego and Brett Krill) have been built for a run in next year, it would be a huge lift to our program, if we can make past this regional (even though it has been stacked as the "Group of Death.")

Sure hope the Bruin fans are out in force tonight (while having a great time and welcoming the fans of other programs). The first pitch is scheduled for this afternoon at 6:00 pm PST. You can also follow along with GameTracker or get updates on Ryan's UCLA baseball twitter. So might as well thread this as our game thread with updates, thoughts, analysis and anything else.

GO BRUINS.

Latest update re. Coach

From Dellins:

Coach John Wooden continues to rest comfortably at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and is surrounded by his family. At their request, no other information regarding his condition will be released.

Coach Wooden’s family and the UCLA Family want to again tell all of Coach’s fans that their thoughts and prayers are truly appreciated.

There will be no further updates today.

I checked the main all-access listing

A number of today’s game are/were being shown, but no UCLA (or LSU/UCI, for that matter).

Just curious from anyone at the stadium....

what was the LSU crowd like. Was it as advertised? Secondly, what is the UCLA crowd like?

by muircoach on Jun 4, 2010 6:54 PM PDT reply actions

Not really

There were some empty seats. UCI had section 1 and the grass area adjacent to it.
LSU has an old cheerleader like the Bruins.

Since UCLA so late, not that many fans, not bad at the beginning. After scoring some runs, people start leaving, especially families with kids.

Gaah! Really making me miss the south(east) right about now. The one chicken-based fast food establishment that beats even the esteemed Chik-Fil-A.

I want to say that I saw one in Vegas

Whether my memory is correct, I don’t know. I was with people that would not have appreciated the goodness of caines, though. That, and that trip was while I still lived 5 minutes from the local outpost.
